serious c/s question

If you have a scheduled c/s, and your water has not broken, what exactly happens?

Does it drain out the vagina when the incision is made? Does it whoosh out after you stand?

Humor me. I have too much time on my hands.

  • I googled it and it said that when you're having a csection they tilt you on the table so that it drains out when they make an incision.

  • I was wondering the same yesterday! With DD, my water broke but then ended up needing a c-section.

I figure they break it in surgery (if your cervix is closed I don't see how they an break it vaginally before or during). I'm sure some water may come out of the vagina, but at that point you are laying down and not feeling anything. And after surgery it will be post partum bleeding coming out not the water because the amniotic sac would be out during the birth. Don't know for sure, but that's what I came up with.
  • Hmmm... I have no idea?

  • With mine it came gushing out when they made the incision. After the babies were out they tipped the whole table and dumped it all out into a bucket. DH said he about passed out. They did not give me any warning that they would tip the table so I panicked and started screaming that I was falling. Once they said what they were doing I was shocked I never expected that.

Does that increase the risk of infection?

Yes...DH said they were pulling out my intestines and cleaning them since the poo went inside me. My doctor explained everything after the surgery. I had no further complications!

I'm sorry!! It really was not too bad and DH and I have a good laugh about it now. I do not think it's that common if it makes you feel better.

    Agreed.

I never thought about this. I sort of figured they would just break your water before hand. This all seems crazy. @Ccip82, that is insane. I'm relieved for you that you ended up with no issues! It sounds like a recipe for disaster.

  • Ladies, I am extremely sorry if I scared any of you. DH and I laugh about it now and honestly at the time I was so wrapped up in DD and on awesome pain meds that I really was not too concerned.

  • As a maternity- nursery nurse who is in the OR during surgery I can tell you. If you are not ruptured when the incision is made to the uterus, it gushed out onto the drape. At the same time the suction is on cleaning it up into a canister. After the baby is out, saline is pour into your abdomen cleaning out any blood or fluid again with it being suctioned right back out. So poop doesn't stay in your abdomen.

Agreed except for the saline part. Only one out of 4 docs use it where I work.

  • I know my H said I had a gush of water out of the incision area when I had my first son.  I had the doc at my DD's birth (2nd child) mention how much fluid there was then too.  I had edema with all 3 of my previous pregnancies.  I believe it all drains out of your uterus with the c-section.  They may suction it out too?  (like at the dentist?)

Kinda TMI... With my 3rd, I my water broke and I tried for a VBA2C.  There was soooo much fluid that came out while laboring.  I was (and still am) pretty shocked about it.  LOL

  • Not sure they broke my water tho help my labor progress with DS1 but it ended in c/s. They do clean you though so apparently there is a lot less post partum bleeding. There are some benefits to a c/s.

  • I asked my doc that and about what happens with my mucous plug. She said, they suck out all of the fluids during the procedure. I didn't know bc I had my iPod playing in my ear the whole time. So I didn't hear shit.

  • Hahahahahahaha!!

When I had mine, it splashed all up on the drape in front of my face.  I asked my DH 'what the fuck was that?! Is it raining?' It was craziness how much fluid there was!
