Arms reach co sleeper mattress question

Does anyone have experience using or plans to get the arms reach mini co sleeper?

I am getting a hand me down from a close friend and we plan to use it for a few weeks when the baby comes until we get the crib. She tells me that she thought the mattress was way too hard and that I should cusion it with foam or get another mattress. Buying a new mattress seems silly as a new crib would cost almost as much or at least 60% of the cost of a good mattress.

So my question is- if you have used it, do you have a suggestion on the kind of foam cover or even a mattress cover that I can use to combat some of the hardness? I looked online don't cannot tell if any of the covers will help. I obviously don't want to use quilts or plush blankets which may not fit the co sleeper. I will go explore at the store at some point but just am throwing this out there in case anyone has better suggestions?

Re: Arms reach co sleeper mattress question

  • Yeah agree that's why I don't want buy just anything and am being extra careful. I'm just wondering because she said she used foam with her baby.

  • I had no problem with the mattress. DS slept there for 7m, and it worked great. Infant mattresses need to be firm so they don't bury their faces in them.

  • I'll ask her when she is back (currently traveling overseas) but if you ladies have used the mattress as is then I won't worry about it too much. Using a recommended mattress will
Make me feel much better than adding anything random.
  • I'm getting the Arm's Reach Co-Sleeper Mini. I asked our friends about it since they got the same one and had their baby just 4 months ago. They like it, and found the Mini was helpful. She thought that if she got the size up from the Mini that she would've had difficulty getting out of bed. I agree with @klutzygrl26 that I think the mattresses are hard and not cushy in order to prevent SIDS.
  • I bought the mini from Amazon after hearing wonderful things about it. I cant wait to use it. :)
  • I really wanted the Arms Reach Cosleeper, but they're banned in Canada due to past infant mortalities from baby's faces slipping between the cosleeper mattress and the bed mattress - so I would not play around with softening the mattress it comes with.

Whoa really? I assume that would be applicable to all co-sleepers right? Anything specific about the arms reach? It looks like it has great reviews in the US and also from some ladies here from f14.

No actually it was specifically the arms reach one, but in general cosleepers are pretty hard to come by here, though Im not sure if they're banned altogether. Health Canada is super strict about what passes and what doesn't. The RNP is banned here too. I just follow our guidelines because I can't in good conscious import something into the country that isnt sold here on purpose. But I know tons of mama's love both products I mentioned here, and I hold no judgement over anyone who uses them. I just wanted to chime in that in this particular case, I'd be extra hesitat to use a soft mattress.
That makes sense. Thanks for the info- it's helpful to know. I think I want to use it only for a month unless we get our crib earlier then it will be a back up for travel if need be.

  • Arms reach does have a mattress cover for underneath that you can buy that is specific to the co-sleeper. I bought one for possible middle of the night messes and quick changes with a fresh sheet under it all.
