For those who were induced - how long were u in labor?

I'm getting induced with pitocin right now and just wondered how long everyone else labored for? They started at a low dose at 2pm and it's almost five and I have contractions but not bad ones yet. I started out at 1cm and 70% effaced. I feel like its long and slow going so far - I'm just ready to get this baby out!

20 hours ... then c-section.  Baby's head got stuck. i was 100% effaced, 8cm, but head wasn't moving through the stations. Baby daddy has a foot of height on me.

I'm sure yours will be better than mine...

  • My mini induction birth story: I was 38 weeks and started at 1 cm. I had a foley catheter put in at midnight and taken out at 7 am when I was 3 cms. Pit was started at 9 am on the lowest dose and not turned up the whole labor. I was checked at 3 pm still at 3 cms but with excruciating contractions. I got an epidural and immediately went from 3-10 cms within minutes. We waited for the doctor and baby was pushed out at 4:15 pm in about 30 seconds during one contraction.

I think all labor and inductions stories are different. Your baby could be here in 10 minutes or in 10 hours depending on how your body reacts to the pitocin. Good luck!!

  • 28 hours. Get up and walk. My contractions didn't get things moving until 14mL/hr. I don't know what that means I just remember seeing it on the pump.

  • 40 hours but it worked! I definitely lost faith at 3pm on day2 when I was still 3 cm (started at 2) but then they got me a portable monitor and I was able to walk the halls for an hour. That got me to 4 so I got the epidural and then let him break my water. It all went fast after that. I was ready to push within an hour but chose to sleep for a few hours instead.
  • About 24 hours, but I started out not dilated at all and had cytoteck first. I had 7 rounds of cytoteck before pitocin to get me to 3 cm, then pitocin took about 5 hours.

  • 12 hrs exactly, but I had 2 doses of cytotec and pitocin
  • After 5 hours and very little progress we did a csection.
  • Thanks ladies! Sounds like everyone responds differently depending on the start point and/or dosage so I will anticipate a long labor :)
  • The first time it took about 7 hours but 2.5 if that was pushing.  The second time was 6.5 hours with about 6 minutes of pushing.  I went into the induction both times at 4cm and 80% effaced.

  • When I started I was 1cm 50% effaced and received two doses of cytotec before any pitocin was given. Waters were broken before pitocin. Didn't really start progressing until I got the epidural and rested to let the pitocin work. Total of 40 hours. Long. I will not be induced next time outside of an emergency.

  • 18 hours. 5 hours after pitocin started, they broke my water. Still didn't progress until I got the epi and then it went fast. Pushed for over 2 hours.

    Good luck!

I will keep my story short and sweet because I had a long drug out ordeal thanks to the rediculous on call doctor. I went in at 5pm Thursday afternoon 3cm 50% and began cervadil. That QUICKLY progressed me to 4cm 100% with the most horrific contractions at 2 minutes apart when the on call doctor decided he just didn't want to deliver me yet and they removed the cervadil. I was given a half dose of pain meds and rested until 6am and 5cm when they started pit. It was a low dose so about 3 hrs in I was 7cm, got my epidural, and they broke my water. By 2:30pm I was ready to push but LO was OP. They positioned me so she would turn and by 3:30 I started pushing. LO was born at 3:43.

ETA: My contractions were never that bad but I have a really high pain tolerance and compared to the back labor I had the night before with the cervadil, it was a cake walk!
  • 14 hrs - started out at 1.5 cm and got epidural / broke water 4 hrs later. I pushed for 1.5 hours bc she was facing up and has a big but adorable noggin.

  • I was 2cm and 60% effaced when I checked into the hospital. At 3:15pm they administered some kind of cream to my cervix to help it soften and dilate. Luckily I didn't need anything else because my body took over. At 9pm the dr checked me and I was 3cm and 80% effaced and my water broke. At 9:30pm I was barely 4cm and DD was born at 10:12pm.

  • It depends also on how many babies you've had before...
  • My water broke on its own, but labor contractions didn't start naturally and was only dilated 2cm, so I was put on pitocin drip-- starting at 1 doubling every half hour.

Baby was born 14 hours after pitocin drip was started.

Like a PP said, getting an epidural seemed to really move things along for me in terms of dilation. Could be coincidence, I guess, but when I got an epidural after 10 hours of painful pitocin contractions my dilation finally jumped from 2 cm to 8 cm and then was at 10 cm just a couple hours later when I started to push.

  • When I was on pitocin last pregnancy they cranked it up once I got the epidural because I could take the pain (or lack there of :)...that might be where the coincidence lies
  • 7 hours on pit, but my water broke naturally 6 hours prior to starting the pit.

  • 12 hours total, but about 4 once they started the pit. They placed prostaglandin and that gave me contractions that fizzled out after about 5 hours. They actually had to turn off the pit after an hour because my contractions were on top of each other. I started out at 2 cm and 75%
  • From the time they broke my water, 8 hours, start to finish. They started the pitocin the night before though.

  • 27h and then a c/s. I never made it past 4-5cm. :( but I was a terrible induction candidate. But at 42w with low fluid, I had no choice :)

  • With DS(my 1st) it was 5.5 hours start to finish. I went in at 2-3cm 60% effaced.

I was induced with this LO(3rd) and it was about 11 hours. I went in at 4-5cm, 50% effaced. I was gbs+ so they didn't break my water til I had the 2 rounds of antibiotics(8 hours after I got the IV)

  • Starting from 1.5 - 2cms from 40 week appointment:

I went in around 3am, didn't get into the room until around 4am. Started on the pg gel stuff until about 7am. Started on a low dose of pitocin at around 7 -7:30am. Wasn't really in active labor until about 1pm when I had progressed to about 4 cms and my OB broke my water. Baby was born at 8:48pm. So active labor was just about 8 hrs. The induction date was a lot more waiting around while some mild cramping more than anything.

  • My water broke 5 minutes after they started pit and it was 10 hours of labor after that! Good luck!
  • 25 hours....I started at 2 cm dilated and 80% effaced. I had 2 doses of cervadil which started hard labor. My water broke by itself when I was 6 cm dilated. Really the worst part was getting my epidural, it took 5 tries before they got one in that worked. After I got the epidural it put me right to sleep and when I woke up it was time to push. I pushed for about 20 minutes and she was here.
  • Started pitocin at 5 am and didn't start experiencing painful contractions until about 10 or so. Baby Eli was born at 3:18.

31 hours from start to finish. The baby didn't respond well to the pitocin, his heart rate kept dropping so we had to keep stopping and restarting, almost had to go into a c-section but baby eventually cooperated, thank goodness.

  • 37 pit @ 20 got to 4cm 40% and the dr told me nope no more, c-section babys head was not even engaged in the pelvis so it would have been a c-section anyways.

  • I started out at 1cm 50% effaced. They started me on Pitocin at noon and I had DD at 9:40pm. They checked me at 4pm and I was 3cm. By 7pm I was fully dilated. I had an epi and they wanted to wait a few hours to let the contractions naturally bring DD down a little further so I didn't push forever. I only pushed for 25 minutes and I honestly thought that was the easiest part of labor.

  • 46 hours of labor, 2 hours of pushing, ended in c section bc baby was sunny side up and i just couldnt push him out. All attempts to flip him were unsuccessful.
  • Started pitocin at 9:30 am she was born at 6:35 pm
  • FTM here. Went in at 6 started the pit at 7. Had my water broken by 8. Had epi at 9:30. By 11 I was at 10 cm. had to wait on doc to get there. Had baby at 1:25 after 2 hours of pushing.
So I was in labor for about 6 1/2 hours.

  • I was 1 1/2 cm with DD, and it took 6-7 hours (just Pitocin and breaking my water)... I was 4 with DS, and it took about 5 (though I didn't really get Pitocin til the end).

Two babies, 11 months apart! We're in for a ride!
  • I went in at 1.5 cm dilated and was induced .. It took maybe 7.5 hours start to finish until he made his appearance!!!
  • 12 hours of contractions- pushed for 45 minutes an my 9lb baby was out! I got the epidural early on and it was the best decision ever. I was so relaxed the rest of the day until delivery time. Good luck! Hope all goes well!
