MIL vent

Am I the only mommy who is having issues with their mother in law? I got along with her great until I got pregnant.

She made lots of little comments that bothered me when I was pregnant, but I just chalked it up to hormones. Now that the baby is here, it's even worse. When my mom makes comments or gives me unsolicited advice, I just tell her I don't want it. But I can't say that to my MIL. She has talked to people about my inability to produce extra breast milk, gets upset when the baby cries when she holds her, because 'grandma can't lose her touch,' thinks everything she did when she was raising my husband (42 yrs ago) are the things we should do now, etc.

Please tell me there are others out there irritated with their MILs also. I normally tell my husband when his mom says something stupid and he agrees with me, but I can't tell him how much she really bothers me.

  • For me it's my in laws in general. Apparently my son is a "pops boy" or needs "nana love" when he's fussy. Each time they get him he screams bloody murder. He is 110% a mamas boy. The second thing is I'm pretty sure it's well known to wash your hands before holding a baby. My father in law told me "at some point you have to stop making everyone wash their hands." Umm, excuse me but last I checked it's cold/flu season and he's my son. You will bathe in hand sanitizer if I want you to before holding him. I just told him "well, he hasn't had his shots yet. So till then everyone will be washing their hands". My mother in law is also dying to feed him. Well, I ebf and have a very small stash of bm in the freezer for when DH needs to watch him(by very small I only have 3oz saved right now, bc I just started). When they have watched him so I could nap, they try to hold him off from eating as long as possible. I feed on demand with no schedule, he's only 5wks old. So no your not alone! Lol.. I love my in laws they mean well, but they are over bearing sometimes. They also want things done their way. Sorry for hyjacking this post, but I needed to get it out! Lol
    Anniversary
  • Mine complains whenever she can on the phone or Facebook that she hasn't seen him since he was 4 days old and makes it seem like I am keeping him from her. I have told her several times that she is welcome to come visit whenever she wants, as she only lives and works 15 min away. My mom lives an hour away and has come 2x a week to see him. So my mil has no excuse to try and make me feel bad for not seeing him. It drives me nuts!!!
  • I didn't get along well with MIL beforehand, so it's better now. Don't get me wrong, she drives me crazy (and vice versa probably), but we now have something in common: we both care for LOs. It is probably the Only thing we agree on. GL establishing boundaries with you MIL. With my bossy SIL I either thank her and ignore the advice, or I good-humoredly laugh at, er, I mean, with her. With my MIL I am more touchy but have managed to be set boundaries/make requests, more or less in a kind way.

  • It's almost 1:00 am and we just got home from an Xmas party at my in laws. We are getting home now because she can't get her shit together. We were supposed to eat at 7. Dinner wasn't ready until 9:30!! We didn't start doing gifts until 11:00. So freaking inconsiderate. Then she got all offended when we said we had to leave, she said "why are you guys tired?". Ummmmmm.... Do you have any recollection of what life with a baby is like? She is seriously out to lunch! Yep, this is my second post about her, that's how amazing she is!
  • My ILs are seriously deranged. MIL is nuts but she is really sweet. She does offer bad advice but when I tell her to drop it she listens. FIL is a different story altogether. He's a brainless, racist, homophobic ass. Besides all that, he likes to argue just to be contentious. He actually told my DH he feels sorry for Atticus because he has a Mom that won't let him watch TV.

During discussions we've had recently he advanced the following opinions: it's okay not to use a seatbelt, the baby should be given water, all our neighbors are heathens because no one has a nativity scene, he should call the cops on his neighbors because they don't park in their driveway at night, and God placed dinosaur bones here to confuse mankind.

Those are all from the last handful of days. Biggest idiot I've ever met. I've seriously wondered if DH wasn't adopted.
  • Cagoldi- that made me laugh and realize my MIL isn't so bad. :-)
