What can I expect tomorrow at my A/S?

My anatomy scan is tomorrow and I'm not sure what to expect. I have a few questions. What do they do right away? Reveal the sex or get measurements? I have an appointment with my midwife right after, will she have the report/measurements to go over everything with me? I'm just really anxious. Will I have any idea if everything is ok during the ultrasound or not until I meet with my midwife?

  • Measurements are priority. They will ask you prior to starting the scan if you would like to know the sex if they are able to tell. The tech will not tell you if there is anything wrong, generally. They tell you they will show the measurements to the DR. In our case, the midwife came in and stated that I would need to return in 2 - 3 weeks (going on the 31st) because our little girl was not cooperating and they could not get views of her heart or brain. She could not tell the sex, and we ended up getting an elective scan a few days later.

  • Our tech asked us right away if we wanted to know before we even started. The first thing she did was told us the gender. Then took all the measurements, we even got to do the 4D it was really cool. I met with my doctor before the scan and she said if she didn't call that means everything was good. Our tech told us everything looked great while she was looking at our baby though so we didn't have to worry.
  • At my appointment the tech asked right away if we wanted to know what we were having. She started with the measurements and when she happened to get a good view she let us know we are having a boy. She commented on a few things like baby's weight and what percentile that would be. She also pointed out the four chambers of the heart (when we were chatting I had mentioned that I'm a nurse in a pediatric ICU where we treat lots of kids with congenital heart defects). When we met with my doctor she went over the measurements and let us know everything looked perfect!

  • I asked questions all along the way but the tech would do the measurement and immediately after say...that looks good etc to keep me relaxed:) she pointed out all 4 heart chambers, counted and labeled all fingers and toes took ankle pictures and showed how they make sure the toes lines up with the ankles etc looked at kidneys measured brain leg and arms bones. Check for cleft lip/palate, looked at baby belly, fluid, and finally gender last
  • Ask ask ask.  With my son, they told me the gender right away, because I admitted that I wanted it out of the way so I could concentrate on everything else.  They will spend a lot of time looking at the baby's heart...so don't panic if they linger.  My experience wasn't that my doc went over everything, just commented that everything looked good.
