SPD - rant and pity party

So I have the wonderful pubis dysfunction. I've gone from being an "up and at 'em", athletic, fun girl to being unable to roll over in bed. Unable to put pants on without sitting down first. Unable to get out of a car. Unable to climb the stairs to our bedroom without crying.

I have told my OB and midwife about it, and how my daily constant "regular pain" level is about an 8/10, with 10/10 happening when I move my body the wrong way.

Their solution? "Well, this will likely resolve after birth. In the mean time, take Tylenol for pain."

Are you f&$@?$& kidding me? That's great that 3 months from now this pain will probably stop. But what do I do in the mean time? I take more Tylenol than I should and the pain just laughs at me.

This is getting debilitating. I'm trying to get ready for baby and work on my dissertation (getting up every 15 minutes to walk around and get blood flowing), but it's like my entire life and all my attention and focus and ATTITUDE and emotion are being held hostage by this pain in the front of my pelvis. I don't know what to do :(

  • Also, people talk about how it will be "so worth it" when the baby gets here, and I am sure that is true. But it isn't really what I want to hear and it is the last thing I can think about while crying over the fact that I can't put shoes on.

  • I wish I could offer some help. I feel like I'm in the same boat. I see my dr tomorrow and I'm meeting another dr at a different office on Tuesday for a second opinion.
If I get any good advice I'll certainy pass it along. :)
  • It's horrible that that's all they're telling you! Mine referred me to a specialized PT. They're going to fit me for a special maternity belt and I guess give me exercises to help. Some people see chiros and adjustments might help. I think @nickichan was in a wheelchair with her first and might have other insight.

OK so this was me with my first pregnancy. And I listened to them and guess what? Mine didn't go away after the end of the pregnancy. After a few months of limping around I went and saw my regular Dr and he sent me to a PT right away. My PT worked magic and had me back to my running self (I do triathlons--always assumed I'd have super active pregnancies!) in 6 weeks. I have again this time, and have been seeing my PT weekly. He has helped a ton, and while I'm still painful at least I'm doing something about it. I've come to accept that pregnancy makes my pelvis fall apart (sung to the tune of Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off--which is not my typical flavor of music but cracks me up anyway). I totally feel for you, get thee to a good PT and get some relief!! Hopefully you will have complete resolution with baby's arrival as well--it is rare to not have it resolve like me. :)

  • Yeah, my midwife was all "That's great that you're in pain! It means your body is preparing for childbirth!" Ugh.

She also told me I couldn't take Tylenol every day - that was too often.

In general, though, be careful about how much Tylenol you take. Taking more than the recommended dose won't increase the pain relief and can be dangerous, even when you're not pregnant.

  • My friend got a lot of relief from her chiro. I'll be scheduling a visit shortly myself.

  • Chiro (I've never been, but heard good things).
    Massage (has always helped me).
DH gave me nearly nightly massages last pregnancy. It was heaven.
This time I'm going to an RMT for a more full body massage.
  • I'm so sorry. :( Hope some of the suggestions helps with the pain!

  • I've unfortunately got nothing to offer here except my sympathies.  I hope some of these suggestions do the trick and get you through the next 3 months!

  • Thanks all. I will def be investigating a physical therapist or chiropractor option. I have been getting prenatal massages which have been great, but, they don't do much to fix my pelvic issues.

  • Going to the chiropractor has helped me a lot too... Good luck!

  • Does your doctor have to send you to PT? I mentioned something to them last time, but my pain in my pelvis is worse now. It hurts to just walk and I think people think I'm exaggerating or my husband thinks I am trying to get out of housework.

  • Wow... I am shocked that they wouldn't do much for you for the pain especially something that is 8/10 to 10/10. When I started having skeletal issues I went into PTL... Which I had the EXACT same issues you are describing. This is when my OB/Midwife told me that I need to see a PT and that I would be bed rest (my cervix was also shortening). PT personally didn't do much for me. The only things that I think I gained from PT was that they showed my DH how to realign my right hip. (We found out my right hip is anterior and would flip forward making my right leg shorter then my left. ) This would help with some of the pain. It got to the point where it was so bad that my OB gave me some pain medication to get through it. However, only take it on a NEEDed bases since it can make the baby depended. After DS was born I was still going out of alignment and limping like PP has stated. It wasn't until I got so F'ed up with PT (now I may have been going to a crappy PT...) That a friend said "Why don't you pay out of pocket and go to Chiropractor" I decided that I needed to at least try it and wow I was walking straight out of his office and I saw him 3 times after that initial visit out of pocket and it did go away. Now with being pregnant I didn't want to be wheelchair bounded at 33 weeks... or bed rested at 28 like my last pregnancy. I decided to see a Chiropractor every 2 weeks since I was 10 weeks pregnant. My cervixs isn't shortening too much and my SPD is under control. I still have aches and pains and problems rolling out of bed or getting into a car, but it really has made a HUGE difference between pregnancies. I was in tears the last appointment because I was 30 weeks and able to walk straight. When pregnancy cripples you for 3 months you start to look at life a bit different especially when you have to relay on DH to push you around and such.... with having a toddler I don't know how I would do it with out my Chiropractor. I would highly recommend you request from your OB to see a PT, or pay out of pocket to see a Chiropractor if your insurance doesn't cover it. That pain is nothing to mess with... it can raise your blood pressure. I hope you find relief soon.
