Self diagnose SPD?

So the last week or two I've been getting more pain in my lower back and pelvis when walking, plus a feeling of pressure between my legs sometimes where it feels as though everything is going to fall out! It gets worse when I go from sitting or lying down to standing up, particularly in the night when I get up to go to the toilet. Yesterday I couldn't lift my right leg up at all. Reading on the Internet it sounds like SPD.

I live in the UK and my next midwife appointment is not for another 3 weeks. Should I just wait till then to mention it to her or do I need to go to the hospital pregnancy unit to get it checked out? Doesn't look online like its particularly dangerous, just painful, and doesn't look like there is anything that can be done for it really so am wondering if its ok to leave it till the next appt?

More than anything I'm just concerned that if I'm this uncomfortable now, waddling around and groaning with pain when I move, what the hell am I going to be like in 3 months time when I'm much bigger? Frustrating because as a plus size mum to be I was very conscious that I wanted to prove that I am still mobile and not physically restricted but with this pain I think it makes me feel much more heavily pregnant than I am so feel restricted in movement too early.

Re: Self diagnose SPD?

  • I have this exact same thing and when I mentioned it to my dr he said it was normal for around 24-30 weeks (don't know how far along you are) he is not diagnose me with SPD

  • I have the same issue when I sit/lie in one position for too long, and I, too, am a plus sized lady. I've found that changing positions for a bit (like if I'm sitting w/my knees bent/feet to one side, shifting to the other side) helps relieve some of the pain/pressure, as does Tylenol/Paracetamol (acetaminophen). If it's occurring most at night, try sleeping w/a pillow between your knees to relieve pressure on your hip and better align your spine.

It's normal in pregnancy to have this, regardless of size.

  • I've had pelvis pain since almost the beginning. Both of my docs said welcome to pregnancy. Lol. Damn pelvis!
  • You could always call your doc, just to let them know. Sorry you're in pain!!

  • I have all kinds of pelvis pain and I feel "frozen" when I move sometimes. I didn't even mention it to doc, I just figured it was normal.

  • I have been told I have this and my doc has referred me for physio for it to help ease the pain or it can get alof worse. I'm also in the UK so I would go see your doctor and tell them what u think. Good luck
  • My doctor wrote physical therapy orders last time for this. In her opinion its the best thing for it. You could ask about that too.

  • It can also be normal, though. I would wait until your appointment to mention it or try to get into a chiropractor and see if that helps. I had SPD with DD and it was AWFUL. I've already started with the hip/back/pelvic pain that you're describing but it is nothing like what I experienced with DD. I am going to the chiropractor this week and will mention it to my MW in a few weeks as well, but I'm pretty sure it's just normal aches and pains at this point. This is also my third baby so I figured third tri ailments would start a little early (25 1/2 weeks now).
