Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Took Evan to the ER Saturday night...

He has been throwing up and having diarrhea since Wednesday.  He has thrown up at least once a day since then.  The ER dr. gave him some anti-nausea meds and he finally ate about 6 oz of formula yesterday, but after the meds wore off, he wouldnt eat again.  The dr. said that he had a virus and that it would "run its course" and that he should be better soon.  Evan's blood work was "perfect" (Dr.'s words not mine) and that he didnt need to be admitted.   We have been trying anything we can to get him to eat or drink.  Pedialyte in a cup, bottle, sippy.  Pedialyte popsicles.  Water, juice, formula.  Bananas, rice, applesauce, toast.  We have tried it all.  He has no interest.

I am at a loss.  I dont know what to do for him and I feel so bad.  I feel like he's going never going to return to the smiley happy baby he once was.  I dont mean to be dramatic, but I just feel so bad for him.

At this point, I cant tell if its the "virus" or him teething because he cut 2 teeth in the last week.   Ugh.  I just feel helpless.

  • Poor baby (and mommy!) I really hope he feels better soon. Can you call the doctor again today and let them know how he's doing?

  • Aw, that sounds awful for him and for you. Hopefully it will pass soon.

  • Did they give you any anti-nausea meds to go home with?  Is he still making as many wet diapers, or does he have tears when he cries?  Any fever?  That's kind of a long time to have continued diarrhea and vomiting.  Can you get a recheck by your pedi?  GL.
  • It sounds like you had a rough weekend.  I hope he feels better soon. Stomach virus's are the worst. One of my guys just got over one and an ear infection and his top teeth are coming in too..so he is not happy.  I know hydration is the most important thing when they have a virus like that.  I did see at the CVS this weekend the pedialyte strips that you place on the tongue and they disolve, they looked like those listerine strips. I have no idea if they work or not, but if you have to try and continue with pedialyte maybe you could give those a try?

He is still having some wet diapers, not as much as usual, but there are still a few/day.  He hasnt really been crying, so dont know about the tears.  No fever.

I thought it was a long time too, thats why we went the ER.  All the Dr.'s say he is fine if he is still taking at least a little fluids and having wet diapers.

  • Well, Pedialyte tastes awful, so I'm not surprised he won't go near that.  My Evan had a stomach bug last month and couldn't keep anything down either.  It took a good week to 10 days for him to stop throwing up.  The diarrhea lasted a little longer.  He wanted to eat though.  Keep offering - it's all you can do.  If he shows signs of dehydration though, call your pedi.  They may admit him to get IV fluids if necessary.  It sucks, but it'll help him.

  • We went through the same thing last week. Adam, DH, and my mom and grandmother all had it. Not sure how I escaped. Will he eat purees? Adam refused bottles, sippies, pedialyte, etc., but would still eat yogurt and purees. The pedi did a few weight checks. He lost a pound in a week, but they said that as long as he was eating fruit and yogurt, he was getting enough liquids. They said to watch for extreme lethargy, no tears and no urine (which is hard to tell with diarrhea every diaper) before they'll think of dehydration. Good luck and page me if you have any questions. It's definitely going around!
