Babies on the Brain

Side eye Saturday

I've got side eyes going on like crazy lately. Maybe you guys do too.

I have noticed my SIL has the tendency to host something, and then ask that everyone bring specific things. When she had her gender reveal over the summer she had it at her house but asked everyone else to bring specific food (we had to bring potato salad upon her request). Now she is hosting Christmas and texted me saying we are to bring orange juice. It's not a big deal but I was always under the impression that if you are hosting, you provide. I mean, it's orange juice.... She can't pick that up herself?

I'm also side eyeing a friend of mine. She won a 46" TV from work and now is trying to sell it. She wanted $500, even though it's for sale at best buy for less. Someone offered her $400 and she said she wasn't sure she could take that. Um, you know you won't get retail price, right?

Re: Side eye Saturday

  • Yikes, if I was hosting, I would accept someone's offer to bring something. But I would never ask! I'm side-eyeing DH. There is no way he didn't see the little smelly gift on the dining room floor from our new puppy before he left for ice fishing this morning. So I got to pick it up first thing in the morning. I don't mind, but c'mon!!

  • My family always brings things to gatherings. No one is expected to provide everything. With that said, when I host I provide enough that we can do without contributions.

  • I side-eyed a driver on my way to work during that crazy snowstorm last week...he was doing 25mph on the highway in a light gray/white car without any lights on.

  • I side-eyed my SIL who left her three kids inside at the family Christmas function while she went out to smoke. She didn't ask anyone to watch them, just said "go play because mama needs nicotine". They are 4, 23 months and 8 months. And they were a handful.

Former MIL would assign us specific recipes to make for family gatherings. I'm quite happy to bring something to a family dinner, but I really hated being told what I was going to cook, especially since it was usually a recipe I didn't like and hadn't made before. ExH finally asked her to tell us what course she'd like us to bring (side, appetizer, dessert, etc) so we could handle the details on our own.
  • Oh don't get me started on the animal mess issues. I do all five litter boxes by myself. I wipe up all the pee, poop, puke and litter that gets tossed all over. My DH does the same thing with random messes.... Just walks past them and claims he didn't see it.

As for the food thing, I do not mind bringing something but it's the instruction of what to bring that makes me mad. Also the fact that she consistently does it! Why do I have to go out of my way to get OJ when they were probably already out to the store to get stuff for that day! I'm also side eyeing her even more now because she showed us a car they went and looked at. It had a price tag of $16,000. They are on public assistance and cannot afford a bigger apartment so their daughter can have her own room, but yet they think they are buying a new car? Ummm, probably not happening.
