low fluid at 20 wks?

I'm a bit concerned. I'm now 23 wks along & my dr told me yesterday that my 20 wk ultrasound should that there was an abnormal amount of fluid so I'm going back for another ultrasound in 3 wks. He didnt seem too concerned bout it but ofcourse I am! So I'm wanting advice from ppl who been thru it. Not just advice from ppl who think they know bout it. I've always been very addicted to pepsi/coke. Its all I drank. But I started taking in more milk, water, & juice. But since bout 15 wks I've been drinking lots of pop again n not enough water. Could go days without water. My mom is an ob nurse n told me drink more water. So as of yesterday I stopped pop n been drinking lots of water. Do u think my pop intake has something to do with the lower amount of fluid? Will the water help bring it up within 3 wks? I'm flipping out n my fiance and I are quite worried . What do they do if the amount is still low?

  • He also said its sometimes hard to determine the amount of fluid. & that I could go back for my next ultrasound n everything would b just fine. But still worried.

  • I am not sure water intake has much to do with your fluid levels, but I will say you need to be drinking way more water especially if you're also drinking pop. If the pop has caffeine that dehydrates you even more. I was admitted to the hospital at 22 wks with my sons pregnancy bc I was having contractions due to dehydration. I will never mess around with that again. It can become very serious. Get a water bottle that has measurements on it and make sure you have at minimum 64 ounces as that is 8 glasses of water a day. I hope the fluid levels resolve. I think it's odd your dr hasn't had you come back yet. They must not be that off if he isn't concerned.

  • Don't beat yourself up now but start drinking lots of water. With our first I had low fluid and the dr had me drinking a gallon and a half of water a day, no soda, no coffe, no juice. Even if something is water based (like tea) stick to water. And if u can for the weekend just take it easy. Like you said, this may totally resolve on its own, but you need to do everything u can to help. I'd say even if your levels rebound, stop with the soda. it's not good for you and it's really unhealthy for baby, if your drinking two 12 oz sodas a day your drinking twice the recommended caffine which can contribute to low birthweight.
  • If your ultrasound was 3 weeks ago why did the doctor only call you yesterday regarding this?  All of the questions and concerns you posted should be discussed with your doctor.

  • I know I shouldn't respond because I only think I know something about it (since it isnt happening to me), but if your ob made your check up for 6 weeks after finding out this condition (s)he must not be that concerned. Stick with water though please!

  • No personal experience, but several friends of mine have had low fluid levels. Their doctors told them they should be drinking tons and tons of water - and nothing else. Cut out the coke and everything else and start chugging water daily -- if nothing else, it's loads better for you.

  • I have personal experience and had an emergency c-section at 36 weeks due to low fluid and here's my advice (same advice given in the last few posts about amniotic fluid) - DRINK WATER ALL DAY. No more soda. Period. Drinking more water CAN increase your fluid. It may be a short lived fix if there is an underlying issue, but it can definitely help.
  • I know that when u drink any form of caffene u should also drink at least one cup of water with it because its a diuretic and flushes the fluids out of you without replenishing your cells. Drink that pure water and im sure you will be just fine.
  • I JUST went through this. Had my 20week u/s almost a month OK & everything was great. Went in on Thursday for my 24w appt & I am having a hard time feeling baby due to anterior placenta. So, they squeezed me in for an u/s to ease my worries.

That u/s showed low fluid levels. Dr said he wanted me to see a specialist asap. This caused me to go in panic mood & spent most of Thursday crying until my early Friday appt with specialist. Anyway, they did another u/s with a higher level machine & said my levels are normal & everything went great. Then tears of joy were released!

I drink a lot of water normally & never drink anything else (never really was a big soda drinker). Dr told me to continue drinking tons of soda & rest on my sides.

You mean water, right? Dr. Told you to continue drinking tons of water & to rest on your sides. OP shouldn't hear you were Rx'd soda, probably.
