How much do you pay for childcare?

Re: How much do you pay for childcare?

  • That is very true. But until both my LO's are in school fulltime, its just not practical for our family. We get great benefits through DH's work, so for now, that's covered too.

  • LCOL: my sanity! ;) In all honesty I'm thinking of going back after this one and it is about $97/week at the YMCA. I'm going to check into part time at the small daycare down the road for after the first of the year.

  • I think we are a medium to high COL area.

We pay $25 a day for a day home (in the woman's home).  That, however, is super cheap.  The average is about $35-40 per day here.

  • I SAH now, but we lived in the Bay Area until DS was 13 months and paid $65/day for a nice in-home daycare.  That was pretty middle of the road for the in-homes in our area.

  • I live in VA in a med COL area. We paid $1500 a month for DS as an infant and now that he's in the young toddler room we pay $1480 a month. We are moving so as of right now I'll be staying home when #2 arrives.

After 4 years, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs our surprise miracle is here!

  • My 7 y/I for before and after care at school is $220/mo.
The 4y/o is at Montessori full time August- May and we pay 8k/year.
The 2y/o is at my moms and I pay her $200/mo.
    Daycare costs are sick!
  • I live near Annapolis MD and we have a nanny who works 6.5 hrs a day.  She gets 2 personal days a year of her choosing, 10 days of vacation a year of our choosing, paid holidays and she makes $12/hr to watch my 18 month old.  Once we have two she'll make $16/hr.  We both (DH and I and our nanny) pay taxes as well.

  • I live in Austin, I say it's a medium cost of living. It is really crazy seeing the variance of child care cost...and wow $1600 a month is crazy high.

I pay $750 a month for my son who is 3, he started preschool when he was 18 months. Before that we had a nanny who we paid $250 a week about $1125 a month. She brought her own baby, and she received PTO, since I work a school schedule.
  • We pay $1300 a month for a fulltime daycare in a NJ suburb just outside of NYC
My 2nd child will be approx 10% off that price. A whole lot of money!

We're in a HCOL area (Boston). I think I win for the highest cost so far. DD was in daycare from 6w-8m. The daycare centers we looked at were $1600-$2800 per month for 9 hours/day, 5days/ week. They do not provide meals, diapers or anything. With 2 under 2 I think it will be cheaper to get a nanny than have 2 in daycare. I haven't looked at cost yet, but I wouldn't expect to pay less than $3000/month for a nanny. Which means I will most likely be paying more for childcare than I take home after taxes. Life is depressing!

  • For a newborn we paid $660, now that he is in the 1 year class we pay $600. I live in northwest fl. I would say it is low cost.

That is a good deal on a nanny. I was paying significantly more than that for only 3 days a week in Houston...which, having lived in both, I would say Houston tenda to be less expensive. I wish I could find someone like that.

    How did you find her?

  • If you don't have a LO yet, how much do you plan to pay? DH and I got quotes in the $1400 per month range for 3 centers within 5 minutes of my current employment. To us , it's not worth it and I will be staying at home for at least the first 6 months. We live in Suffolk county, NY.

I live in suffolk too @alphalyrae!  Where are you located?

  • We expect to pay between $800-1000 a month in California. Luckily we are not in a super HCOL.

  • So I had a total meltdown over daycare earlier this week (hello pregnancy hormones) but when I got my crap together and called a local place (I worked at their camp over the summer and they're probably the only place in the area I'm okay with) is $1,350 a month + $150 if you need early drop off (which we do).

I'm in a high cost of living area.

However, my mom (who works in insurance) told me today that DH and I can allocate up to $5,000 for childcare on our FSA accounts.  Even though we already submitted the paperwork for our FSAs this year, we will be able to add funds after DD is born because her birth will be considered a QLE (qualifying life event).  So it looks like we will be using that daycare provided we can get a spot.  Hoping my working there over the summer will help us land a spot for her.  Fingers crossed.
  • We live in Austin,Tx. The school/daycare we chose for infant care will be $1150 a month for full time.
