Braxton Hicks

Yesterday morning, I noticed my belly got super tight and hard.  I thought it was weird and neat and continued about my day.  Then it happened about 10 times throughout the day, then up to 3x/hour last night.  I drank a lot of water, and I think they stopped sometime overnight.

The only concern with BH contractions are that they're actually real contractions, right?  I read my baby book and it said there's no problem unless 4+/hour, pain, bleeding, etc, etc.  I knew it wasn't "real" labor, but I was a little worried that something else could be wrong.

Re: Braxton Hicks

  • Until you reach that "unless...." portion of the sentence, it should be fine. Don't hesitate to leave a message with your doctor if hearing their viewpoint will make you feel better.
I'm getting them a lot these days too (and did so with my other pregnancies)

  • Sometimes it can be an indication of needing more water and rest but BH in and of themselves are a very normal and expected part of pregnancy. Your uterus and body are preparing for real labor. Like others noted, no need to worry until X amount/hour (I would clarify with your provider how many concerns them and what to do if you reach that number - most will tell you to drink a big glass of water and put your feet up) or bleeding or intense pain.

  • Exactly what everybody else said. I was having the same issue and had a doctor's apointment yesterday and she told me to take it easy, get some rest and relaxation and make sure I'm drinking plenty of water. She said if it happens again and you don't have any bleeding or anything that your body is just telling you to take a break and you should listen. :)

  • Thanks for all the advice and thoughts.  If they get any worse, I'll talk to the doc.  If not, I'll ask anyway at my next appt.
