  • One good way to get started is a new born cloth diaper rental from somewhere like Jillian's drawers. You can see what you like and try different things out without as big of an investment.

  • Y'all are making me jealous. Ours are just stacked (they were organized, and then DD thought they looked cute and started playing with them, haha) in our bedroom. Once I get my mess together, I'll share ours! This is the first we will be CDing, but I've already gone waaaaaay overboard. Way. Over. Board. I'm on self-imposed restriction. Haha. At least, until the next big sale catches my eye. ;-)

this is about 65% leftover from my original cloth stash (which was much more basic) and 35% from stuff i've acquired over the years, knowing i'd eventually plan on having a second child.  i was very caught off guard by the too-big-for-newborn-too-small-for-one-size phase, so i really beefed up in that area this time around...  for that 10-14 pound zone where the one-size diapers just don't fit very well, but where the newborns are starting to get ridiculously small and tight.

the beauty of newborn diapers is they are used for such a short period of time that they don't get nasty or worn out, and therefore have a GREAT resale value!

rachel has good suggestions for places to start.  a diaper trial program is a great first step.  find a local cloth diaper store (i'd even drive up to an hour and a half to find one, honestly) and take a new-to-cloth class if they are offered.  that will be a GREAT way to start getting to know the lingo and the different options out there!
  • Yeah, I'm still debating if I want to start with disposable NBs instead of getting a whole newborn stash that might not even fit.

  • I've got some preemie prefolds in order and I got some mini coveralls from blueberry's clearance sale. I have like five xs bg somewhere, too, but idk where. I'll eventually get some gmd fitteds and I think that will be it for newborn/size small! I like the coveralls because they have two rise settings, so they fit itty bitties and then unsnap and fit long enough to get you to one size.

  • @littlelady77https://www.easyclothdiaper.com is 15% off today with coupon code MAS13 (good through Christmas Eve)
  • You'll love the prefolds and covers on a newborn more than anything else. Easier, holds in everything- we never had a leak in those, faster and simple. Even the NB BG will probably be too big in the beginning unless your baby is huge. Lol
    BG aios are wonderful!!!!!!!
  • Awesome stash!

  • I really love cloth diapering and all, but rinsing all the poo off, then washing them several times so they don't stink is tedious.

    ~~Everyone Always Welcome~~

  • MamaFantastic I'm trying to build up a smallish reasonable stash with a variety in it so I can try everything then buy more of what works for us.  Maybe enough to wash everyday and then I can double with what works.  I have two questions for you (or anyone really).

    1. Do OS covers work with infant prefolds or do you need to get infant prefolds?
    2. Talk to me about this middle stage, 10-14lbs.  What works best for that stage?

Thanks for the coupon code! I'm all over that.

  • you need a small sized cover for sure for the newborn stage.  i don't even own any big one-size covers because i liked using all-in-ones for the older months/years and they don't require a cover at all.  i was a BIG fan of the thirsties duo wraps in size 1 because they work from 6 to 18 pounds, and therefore work through that annoying middle phase i was talking about.  this size range is achieved because the rise snaps down smaller for newborns, then opens up fully for 3-4 month olds.  the cover has leg gussets too, which i felt helped with poo-splosions.

for that middle stage, you can squeeze by with tri-folded prefolds (basically a prefold that's folded in thirds to look like a maxi pad) that you lay into a cover.  we did that for awhile, but by the time he was 3 months old and 15 pounds, those newborn prefolds were not even covering the penis and the bum at the same time...  so it was far from ideal.  i really liked my BG bamboo fitteds (they are in row 5 in the photo, on the far left) for that middle phase, as they were specifically a small size (as opposed to the XS for the newborn phase) and were designed to fit in that 10-15 pound range.  in the past few years, i've added 4 BG small sized AIOs and another thirsties duo size 1 diaper to the "inbetween" diaper stash...  that should help us a bit more this time around.  i will likely also pick up a dozen of the next size up for prefolds...  the smalls work well for the inbetween phase too.  because i have tons of covers, prefolds make the most sense from a money-saving standpoint, as they are about $2 each and work very well as part of a diapering system.

    Thanks ladies!

I just got these in size 1:
    Iryna Merzlikina's photo.

and a few more newborn AIOs.  Once all my fluff mail comes I will have to do an inventory pic.  I don't even know how many diapers are on their way at this point
