Big baby?

So at our a/s on Tuesday, I was 18w 2d and Kaylee weighed 9oz. I was measuring 18w 6d but what did your babies weigh and at what week? I am just curious ;)

Re: Big baby?

  • awww one of each! How cool :)

  • I wouldn't be worried because if it was any concern i'm sure your u/s tech/doctor would have mentioned something. I am not worried, only curious.
  • Following. We just had our a/s today and found out we are having b/g twins weighing 13 and 14 oz at 19w6d. Didn't think to ask if that was big, small or what.

Did you know you were having twins?

  • We did- found out at 7w appointment. Edit: just too lazy to change ticker!

For some reason I took it as you just found out today. Reading fail! Congrats!

  • My fundal height measured large and at the scan the tech said the baby was 12 oz and the measurements were 1-2 weeks ahead.
  • Mine was 11 oz at 19 weeks which was one to two weeks ahead. But...I don't put too much stock in the U/S predictions. DS measured right on track until suddenly at 37 weeks was 4 weeks ahead and BAM 10 lbs 3 oz at birth.

  • 20 weeks today and baby weighed 12 oz. The tech said that was the 51st percentile.

  • I was 19 w 5 d for my A/S today, but I've been measuring 6 days behind consistently (but they're not changing EDD). She said baby was 10 oz, which is 24th percentile. At DD's A/S they also told me weight and percentile...did they not tell you that? You could probably google a chart, although, like others have said, weights can be off quite a bit.

  • My babies always measure small in the first couple ultrasounds, yet I've had 10lb 12 oz and 9lb 12 babies, so I wouldn't read into it too much at this point....or any point really because they are very unreliable. With my second baby at 32weeks I had a us that determined baby was already 9lb 9oz, which freaked me out thinking that i read somewhere babies gain about 1/2 a pound a week in the last few weeks of pregnancy. So I'm going to have a 13 lb baby!!!?!?! Yeah, 8 weeks later I had a 9lb 12oz baby. Still large but not a 13 pounder.

  • By the a/s DS was measuring just over a week ahead and later on was measuring 2 weeks ahead based on size. He was still only 9 lbs 3 oz though, which they had estimated him between 9-9.5 lbs.

Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!

  • 13 oz at 20 weeks and was told that's right on track :)

  • 10 oz at 17 weeks. I was told baby was on the large side.
  • I was told with DS at my 40 week visit that he was about 7 lbs. I gave birth 6 days later to a 9lb 5oz butterball.

  • I DO plan to be induced earlier though (40 weeks, not truly "early") if this one measures off the charts at 37 weeks. DS weight estimate showed as "xs" because the ultrasound couldn't measure that big. I don't think my back is capable of that again.

I plan on it too. My pelvic bones aren't capable of doing it again. In fact, they are already talking c-section with me :(

  • This LO is measuring about 10 days ahead. Estimated 14 oz at 19'weeks

DD measured 1-2 weeks ahead during 3rd tri. She was born a week early at 8 lb 13 oz. she also has an "off the charts" head. I had no issues pushing her out!

  • I know a woman who just had a natural birth with a 9lb 14oz baby... Without having looked into baby sizes and whatnot a whole lot, I am feeeeeeling like I just really wouldn't want to do that.
  • I didn't know they could do weight guesses this early and it makes me want to corner a tech and ask all kinds of questions about how they do that.  Also, I second what everybody else said about not putting too much stock in the ultrasound size guesses.
  • JoelleOK said:
Ultrasounds are not very good at predicting baby size. The error can be more than 1 lb. Be very cautious about inducing labor because of a "large" baby.

This is so very true.  Any good radiologist, tech, or OB should tell you this.  They can be off by as much as 2 lbs in either direction and in a baby that is a lot.

I had to do a ridiculous amount of extra monitoring because my baby was measuring in the 90% percentile with 6 weeks to go (and my MFM office was ridiculous).  I had a 7lb15oz normal sized baby at 40+ weeks.  I don't buy into the measurements.

  • My son was 11 lbs 11 oz at birth, this one already feels large, my fundal height at 16 weeks measured 22, my a/s isn't till the 26th I'm so anxious to see where we stand! This is a repeat csection too.

  • With my last I believe she was 12 oz at 20 weeks.

This one was 5 oz at 14 weeks (book says they should be a little less than 2 1/2 typically). Can't wait to see in a couple weeks how he or she is growing!

My mom had all 5 kids natural, ranging from 7 lbs to 9 lbs 12 ounce (both of my brother's weights). She said they all hurt the same :)
  • At my A/S I was 18 wks 6 days and baby was measuring almost 2 weeks ahead and weighing 12 ouces. I go back for another scan 1/15/14 to repeat measurements and weight. My last child was born at 36 weeks weighing 7lbs11oz.

My 10 pounder was vaginal. His labor was SOOOO much easier than my 8 pound daughter. It's all about the head circumference. There are "skinny" babies with big heads. I'd take a large baby in a good position than a smaller one who's "sunny side up" any day!

  • My a/s was done at 18w4d which is exactly what I measured and he was a whopping 9oz!! :D
    imageimageimage
  • I was 19 weeks 2 days yesterday and baby was 11 oz the tech said she was a little big but the doctor said between 10 and 14 oz is typical at this time.
    image

  • DS measured ahead the entire time, and the growth ultrasound we had at 38.5 weeks was spot-on. He was predicted to be 9.5 lb, and he came out weighing 9 lb 7 oz.

So size estimates can be completely accurate if thebaby is in a good position and the tech is experienced and uses a lot of measurements from all the right areas. But I wouldn't put much faith in one prior to 36 weeks.

Fundal height is much less reliable, as the mother's body shape provides too many variables.

    DD: 5/22/14 | 9 lb 9 oz, 21.5 in

  • I didn't get a weight estimate at my a/s but up until the a/s, the CRL was measuring almost a week ahead (and I know when I Oed, so dates are accurate), but baby has "slowed down" to match up more with her dates.

  • As previously said, ultrasounds can be off up to 2lbs either way. Measuring that far 'ahead' isn't really a big deal, perhaps baby hit a growth spurt early? I've consistent measured 5+ days ahead this entire pregnancy & measured ahead the whole time with ds1, & he was born the day before his due date. He was 7lbs 9oz which is average size. And as far as the big babies are genetic, I was 8lbs 1oz & dh was nearly 10lbs, as were all his siblings, so I was sure our son would he on the bigger side, yet ds was smaller than both of us.

  • My baby measured a week ahead. My OB is making me due the glucose test early now. :-S
  • They measured my baby at 11oz at my a/s scan when I was 19w5d.
