Question to those with GD or GD during previous pregnancies

Hello ladies!

I was diagnosed with gestational diabeties (hypoglycemic/low low sugar probs, not high). I was wondering if any of you have had the same diagnosis with previous pregnancies, and if you believe it affected the baby negatively- low/high birth weight, insulin or low/high sugar probs, issues later on etc...

I try hard to manage my sugar, but sometimes I still wake up between 2-4am and have to get some protein to get back on track. Being a FTM I'm hoping for any info you ladies have on this.

Thanks in advance! :)

Edited because my phone still hates me.

Re: Question to those with GD or GD during previous pregnancies

  • I had undiagnosed GD with my first, or so they suspected. I didn't regulate my carbs at all and DD was born at 9lbs, which doesn't seem big, but I'm only 5' 1". She also had blood sugar issues.

With DD2, I controlled my sugars pretty well and DD had no issues, she weighed 6lbs, 6oz.

I believe if you watch your sugars, you and baby should be fine. I also try to eat protein before bed. Good luck.

  • Oh wow you're smaller than me (I'm 5'3"). Thanks for the response. How are you feeling so far this pregnancy? @CamrynnsMommy
  • So far, so good. I have yet to do the Glucola test, I do that in two weeks, but my OB suggested to just go ahead and start the GD diet.

Other than GD, is your pregnancy going well?

  • That's good! Good luck to you. Other than that I haven't have any issues (well other than headaches occasionally).
  • If you have any further GD questions, feel free to PM me.,

  • I was borderline GD with my son, completely diet controlled the entire time and he was still 11 lbs 11 oz at 39.1 but was born with perfect numbers had no sugar issues ever. This time I was tested at 7 weeks and have been every 2 weeks since my fasting number is a few points above where they want it but according to the American diabetes association I'm fine. I haven't had my anatomy scan yet it's not till next week, but I'm assuming this baby is larger than usual also. The diet is pretty easy to follow, I'm more annoyed with testing 4x a day and having to test twice most times because my meter is so dang sensitive that if I haven't washed my hands it can affect my results up to 20 points -.- I drink a ton of milk to help keep my protein levels up and have a few carbs. Usually having about 21 oz before I go to end between 8-9pm.

So far this pregnancy has been rough even at 19 weeks I still get some morning sickness, and in 1st Tri I could hardly sit up most days en on B6 and zofran. I'm finally able to do stuff now which is good. I just hope I don't get as big or bigger with this baby as I was with my son (gained 47 lbs) I was totally miserable at the end, so far I haven't gained anything.

  • I also have a glass of milk and some cheese if I wake up during the night.

  • I had GD with DS, that went undiagnosed until I was 34 weeks and he ended up being 9lbs 3.2oz, which isn't awful. I'm very petite, 5'2" so he was large by comparison to my body but he had no health issues, he was a remarkably healthy little boy. The only complication we had with it is that I am still diabetic, it never went away.
  • Thanks for the feedback ladies! This is helping my worried brain. I was trying to avoid the google monster and WebMd, and its nice to have info from those who have actually been there done that.
  • I had mixed type with Asher and have it again this go around.  Basically my sugars are super high two hours after eating, but so low in the mornings, I can't stand up without passing out.  It is a constant struggle to maintain balance, especially since I have HG pretty badly too.  I'm insulin dependent and need glucose tabs for when I go low.  It sucks.

Just be super careful, always carry snacks on you.  When I was pregnant with Asher, my blood sugar bottomed out while my H was in an appt.  I got up to go to the panera across the street and I fainted in the middle of a busy street in Boston.  I basically feel face first and kissed the pavement.  I broke all six of my front top teeth and now they are all crowned.  No joke.  It was terrible.

  • I also had GD with our first (high BS). I was mostly diet controlled, but did need a small dose oral med before bed at the end to control my fasting numbers. I was tested a week ago @ 19 weeks and passed. I will be tested again later. I have been watching my diet and exercising more this pregnancy in preparati

I was induced a week early with DD because of low fluid. DD was born at 8 lb 13 oz. DH was a 9 lbs baby and my MFM made a point to tell us baby had a big head like me! I think that we just make big babies. DD and I were both fine after delivery. My PMD does check my A1c at my physicals to monitor for diabetes.

Oh my goodness! I'm so sorry that happened to you! I notice I start to feel a little dizzy-ish followed by "I can't focus on anything" then the dizzies get worse. I hope you HG os gone soon. That is terrible. Especially combined with the sugar issues!

At night its the worst for me. I have to eat protein right before bed (string cheese and/or nuts). Thanks you guys for the feedback!:)
