Hemangioma and Propanolol?

Anyone have any experience with this? We took DD to a vascular specialist to take a look at the hemangioma on her face, and they recommended that we treat with propanolol (after seeing a cardiologist to rule out any heart issues). As background, the hemangioma is relatively small, but quite prominent (such that lasering it is not really an option), and while we'd probably leave it be on another part of her body, since it's so noticeable, and she gets a lot of attention from little kids who are worried about her "boo-boo," we've decided that it would be better to remove it while she's still too little to know it's even there. There is a chance it would go away on its own, but we would have to wait until she's about 2 to know for sure, and they recommend removal on or before 1 year if you're going to do surgical removal, since it will scar less.

From the research I've done, it seems like this is a promising way to avoid surgery, and that there really are very few and rare side effects, but I'm just wondering if anyone else has used or is using it?

Re: Hemangioma and Propanolol?

  • My sisters little girl has one on her leg. She'll be a year in January and they haven't done anything about it but again it's on her leg. It has shrunk and lightened up a little and they told my sister that it might go away on it's own, but who really knows?

I'm not sure about the treatment you're speaking of but I would probably try it and if you think you all should go the surgical route, I wish you luck :)

  • I had one when I was a kid but it was so large I had it surgically removed. They didn't have the propranolol when I had mine. However, even if you have to have it surgically removed it's not that bad. I don't even have a scar at this point. At least not one you can see. That being said if DS would have had one I would have done the propranolol first and then considered surgery. Good luck either way mama!!

  • Thanks, all - I really appreciate the input! I think I'd be more conservative if it was anywhere else on her body, it's just the first thing people notice, you know? Sigh. I'd rather avoid surgery if we can, so I think this is a good first option.

  • My dr actually me ruined this at one of Bs appt. we're not really pursuing it bc it is small and just over his left nipple. But if it were on his face and/or larger I would consider it.
