High-Risk Pregnancy

Pre-e question

I am pregnant with my second little bundle of joy. With my first I was diagnosed with pre-e early on. (28 weeks) My DD was born at 32 weeks. She was healthy and only spent a month in the NICU. My OB told me that I am going to go through it all again (which I already knew). I have been doing some research and read that it always doesn't happen with every pregnancy. I was wondering if any of you ladies had any first hand experience with this?

Re: Pre-e question

  • Um, that seem s almost negligent. Pre e is NOT guaranteed in subsequent pregnancies. In fact, pre e is considered a "first prganancy" issue ( although it can occur again). Many go on to have uneventful second pregnancies. You did have earlier and severe onset, could your dr have meant you have a higher chance because of it?

  • I don't think so. My dr said that you never get rid of it. That my symptoms will just show up a couple weeks later. He is so sure of it that my due date is April 8th and he told me to expect the baby at the end of February.
  • Hmm...I think you should get a 2nd opinion from a different doctor.

  • There has been some research looking at the rate of reoccurrence in subsequent pregnancies, but more is needed. The findings suggest the risk of having it again is approximately 20%, however experts cite a range from 5-80%, depending on when you had it in a prior pregnancy, and how severe it was. If you had preeclampsia during your first pregnancy, you may get it again. While repeat occurrence is often milder, no one can predict for sure. You should be watched carefully after a preeclamptic pregnancy.

The risk of preeclampsia increases if you have any of the risk factors mentionedabove, or have developed chronic hypertension or diabetes since your previous pregnancy, or if you are having IVF, twins or other multiples.

  • get a second opinion - or another dr

there is NO guarantee that because you had pre e with your first that you will develop it with your second, third, etc

as a matter of fact... 'first child with a father' is considered a risk factor for pre e (so is first time moms)

  • My BFF just had her second baby and delivered the first early due to pre-e and this time made it to 40w3d with no pre-e. Nothing is a guarantee in pregnancy!

  • Agreed with the other girls, just becaue you had it the first time doesn't mean you will again.  I happen to have it again but it came a few weeks later in this pregnancy and so far is being controled with BP meds.  Well the BP part is.

You def need to get a second opinion if your doc is telling you this/

Currently 32 weeks pregnant and NO signs of pre-e

It is definitely not guaranteed.  I have spent a lot of time researching this (i.e. reading academic research studies - not dr google) and there are many things thought to increase your risk factors for reoccurrence - how early and how severe you got it before, whether you developed HELLP, length of time between pregnancies, etc.

EDIT: But even if it was early and severe (as mine was), most of the "reoccurrence" rates I have seen have only been about 60%...far from guaranteed.

  • Lurking but wanted to respond...

I had severe pre-e with my first daugther and had an emergency induction at 35w.  She was healthy but I was VERY sick and was in the hospital for nearly a week after delivering her due to multiple complications.  The pre-e started around 28w and continuously got worse.  Each week that passed was a blessing.

This time, I have had zero symptoms of pre-e and am 34w today.  My blood pressure has been normal (I take it every day at home since it's generally higher in the OB's office), no protein in my urine, no vision issues or headaches, and it's been an uneventful pregnancy.

There is NO guarantee you will get it again and I agree with pp's that you should get another doctor.  Best wishes to you.

  • My MIL had pre-e when pregnant with DH, her first child. She has nine children and he is the only pregnancy that she had pre-e with. Definitely not guaranteed.

  • :lurking: I had Pre-E with my DD and we are now TTC again. I had a consult with a high risk OB and he said there is approximately a 10% chance of getting it again. He also told me to take a baby aspirin and a calcium supplement. I wouldn't do that without talking to your doc first.

Your doctor sounds like an f-ing idiot. I would consider getting a new doctor. I only had preeclampsia with my first who is five months, so I don't have personal experience with second pregnancies. However, I know other people (family) who had pre-e with one pregnancy and not another.
  • Still no sign of pre-e and at 35 weeks.

This doctor sounds like a moron, I'd run away as fast as I can.

  • I was concerned over this too except I went as far as having HELLP. I talked to my DR about it and she said I'm not guaranteed to get it again. I asked about if I should use a HR OB (since I'll be HR again) or just my regular OB. She told me it was my choice and would refer me where ever I wanted to go. I had twins the first time so I assume that may have had something to do with it. It didn't start till 33 weeks and I delivered at 34w4d. I'm hoping next time I get to the end of my pregnancy with no Pre-e or HELLP because I'm hoping for a VBAC this time.

I had a healthy regular pregnancy with my first. I'm 37 weeks pregnant and was just diagnosed with preeclampsia. So.. I'm not sure
  • I had it my first pregnancy and now I have several red flags for it again. I am being treated like I have it.

  • I did not have preeclampisa with my first pregnancy, but had it with my second.  Instead of it affecting my vision, it affected my heading due to the pressure, swelling, and crazy GD.  I was completely deaf for 2 months.  However, with this third pregnancy, I am hoping my muhch healthier lifestyle will help some but I know there is not much research on my side.  Who knows, I guess I will just have to wait and see what happens.

  • Yes I think your Doc is quite odd for saying that!!

I know several people who had the first pregnancy and not in subsequent pregnancies. My sister and Niece both had it first and not subsequent. I had it on my first and am hoping not to have it again although it is likely my BP will go up since I have a preexisting condition.

GL and just stay healthy. There are a few things you can do to lessen the chances but I don't know what they are  check google :)

  • Agree with others that you are not guaranteed to have it again -- BUT - with that said, I had it with both of my pregnancies and with my second I had even earlier onset (34w with DS1 vs. 30w with DS2). It may not happen again -- but it also could happen again. You know what the signs are for and what to look out for - just keep a close eye on yourself!  Best of luck!
