High-Risk Pregnancy

Terbutaline questions

Background: I've had 2 losses both at 21wks. One was diagnosed as placental abruption but could have been ptl, and the other was incompetent cervix.
This time around: I'm currently 21weeks. At 13weeks I had a preventative cerclage placed and have been on 17p injections since 16weeks. At 19 weeks the MFM found that my internal cervix had opened and the fetal membranes are funneling to the stitch. I've also been having Braxton hicks contractions since ~18weeks
So today my reg obgyn prescribed terbutaline for at home use for contractions. Obviously I want to do everything possible to keep this baby in for as long as possible so should the known risks/controversy over the use of terbutaline make me second guess the Dr's decision?? How many ladies have taken terbutaline this early on and how did it effect your pregnancy? Really any information about this med or about a similar situation would be greatly appreciated. TIA

Re: Terbutaline questions

  • First of all I'm so sorry for your losses.
I had a terbutaline shot at 24 weeks and went home with a prescription for it and said it I felt the contractions again, to take it. I read about it and called my friend who is an OBGYN. She told me to call them before taking, better to go to L&D than to self medicate. They would be able to better evaluate at a hospital.
I'm glad I called her. It 28 weeks I was back at L&D with preterm labor. This time they kept me there for a few days, gave me the steroid shots and I went home with a prescription for Procardia, 10mg every 6 hours. I'm almost 35 weeks now and baby has been great, no further dilation or effacement since I started the Procardia. I heard from other people too that in some cases it works better than the terbutaline with less side effects.
Wishing you luck and keep us posted!

  • Have they mentioned procardia for contractions at all? That is what I am on and its done wonders. You can also alternate the two if you contract too much.
    BFP #1 (7/13/12) MC (8/14) 9 weeks. D & C 8/17.
BFP #2 (5/18/13) due 1/26/14. Grow baby grow!
    Its a surprise! Team green!

  • As far as I know the terbutaline is only to help me get to 24 weeks then we'll discuss more options. My dr seemed pretty confident with the the decision to use terb as needed for "Braxton hicks like" contractions only. He was sure to emphasize the importance of seeing him or going to the hospital if things changed or if the contractions become painful or closer together. I'm just hesitant because of all the controversy but ultimately I just want to feel like we're doing everything we can to give this baby the best chance possible. the dr did mentioned procardia but I think he's not as familiar with it and decided to go with terb. However, if the side effects are super bothersome I supose insisting on trying procardia instead is an option.
