kelly - That deserves a post of its own. Congrats on completing the dissertation! My little sister just defended hers over the summer and watching her do all of the research, writing, and other prep work gave me such a new appreciate for PhDs!!! And my little sis did it all as a single woman living by herself. I can't imagine having babies and a husband to take care of (and deliver) during the process. You should be very proud!!
"> Thanks, and thanks to everyone else who liked or commented Maybe when I actually have my degree in my hand (and in Germany my title will be Dr. Kelly321 even though I'm not a medical doctor), I'll make an extra post. It'll be quite a while until that point, though, since in Germany you not only have to successfully defend but also publish your dissertation before getting your degree. So by the time I find a publisher (I'd prefer not to self-publish, but it is an option) and edit to their satisfaction, it'll be at least mid-2014.

If its not a weapon you actively use for hunting then it's to necessary. Someone posted about getting an AR-15. That is absurd. That is a weapon for hunting people.....I don't care how safe you are, or how safe you think you are. It has no place in the hands of average citizens. I also don't believe in your right to weapons. I'm Canadian so our laws are quite different, and so are the incidents of mass shootings.....as in it's a very rare occurrence here.
Like I first said, it's kind of an irrational fear. I'm not sure where it came from honestly.
But I have a question about the safe. And this is an honest question, not snark. If an intruder came into your house with a gun, would you be able to get to your gun quickly enough to defend yourself and your kids?
A fingerprint safe is so easy to open you just put your hand over the sensors and it pops open and you grab the gun. There's no turning and dialing or anything like that.
As far as whether or not I could use it - depends on the situation. If DH and I hear glass break in the middle of the night, as if someone is breaking into our home. DH would get the gun and I would run to the kids. Hopefully all of that would happen before the intruder would find us. Obviously if we wake up and there is an intruder standing over us the gun is worthless locked up next to us.
So I sometimes the gun would help and sometimes it wouldn't. I remember reading a case in the news last year. A mom was home with her twins and a man kept beating on her door. It scared her so she called 911, grabbed her gun and hid with her kids in a closet until the police arrived. Before the police got there the man had managed to break down her door and then search the house. On the 911 call you can hear her announcing to him that she has the gun as he's trying to get in the closet and then you hear her start firing as he gets in. A man that managed to break down her door and search the house for her wasn't just trying to rob her and leave. He had intentions of harming her. Thank goodness she had that gun. The thought of a woman being raped, tortured or murdered in front of her kids or God forbid, that happening to her babies in front of her, is the most terrifying thing I can think of. In that case, I fear for women who aren't able to at least TRY to protect themselves.
So for every bad case about a child being harmed by a gun I can think of a good case where the gun saved the child's life. There is risk in life with everything.
I think if you have never been around a gun, held one, or shot one before you would tend to be a little nervous about it or stressed out even; That's understandable. People are also scared of spiders, snakes, and speaking in public so the fear behind something as powerful as a gun is legitimate. The media has made owning a gun a dirty word and it really irritates me because we are respectable people and responsible with our guns. While there are bad things that happen by people shooting a gun, you bet your ass I wouldn't be caught without one in my house. I couldn't imagine trying to fend off someone who is armed that has broken into my house with my babies in there. We have a loaded gun on our headboard, in a safe, of course. But we could get to it with in a matter of seconds if need be. We also have a 45 gun stand up fire proof safe in our basement with other guns that are loaded incase shit hit the fan (yes we are those people-- I have 6 months of water and 6 months of food plus over 3,000 rounds of ammo in our basement). This girl will not be caught with her pants down if I can prevent it and I will not be bringing a knife to a gun fight.
The good thing about the hot topics is most of us are able to discuss it and let people have differences in opinions. I love hearing about how other people think!
So, I hear all of you gun owners and understand that you are all very responsible with your guns. And I totally understand your reasons for wanting to own one. Like I mentioned before, I live in the murder capital of the world, so I could probably benefit from owning one.
But one thing I've noticed about the two sides of the argument is that the pro-gun side tends to deal in hypothetical situations (eg. what if that mom didn't have a gun, if guns were illegal then only criminals would own them, I want to be armed in case someone intrudes in my home and threatens me and my children) and the anti-gun side tends to deal in reality (eg. countries that have stricter gun laws have lower rates of gun deaths). The only exception to this is the page the @PeanutR1 posted about accidental childhood deaths. And while that is true, I'm more concerned with the non-accidental deaths from gun usage.
And since I put more stock in facts and figures than I do in theoretical ideas about personal freedom and liberty, I'll stay on the anti-gun side. Some people value their own personal freedom more. And I get that. I guess I've just got more of a commie streak since I don't mind some of my "freedoms" being taken away if it benefits the country as a whole.
musicalmama - there is concrete data about how guns prevent crime that I can dig up if you would like. My NRA member husband could write a dissertation on this. Let me know if you want the info.
@musicalmama5, while I agree that some gun owners are 'what ifs' type of people, there is a whole other type as well. People who hunt and target/skeet shoot. We are both of those people. There is an outdoor shooting range about a mile down the road from us so it's something that we enjoy doing. We don't just own guns for the what if scenarios (although I admit, we have those for that purpose as well), we own them to hunt for food and also for the enjoyment of target shooting.
The car analogy bothers me for another reason. If you're irresponsible with your car you have your drivers license suspended or revoked. The same isn't true of gun ownership. We do take irresponsible people off the road every day, yet gun owners aren't held to the same standard even though it can affect others the same way (or worse, I've yet to see a case where 20 children died in one incident due to a bad driver).
I understand the level of fear that would lead someone to believe a gun in the house is a good idea. I just think there should be some sort of oversight to prevent tragedies. It seems like every few days in this country children or teens get their hands on a gun and kill themselves or someone else. When that was happening in cars we designed carseats and boosters and made it mandatory to use them. When it was happening with medications they designed childproof bottles and required medications be sold in them. When it was happening with other household poisons they put childproof tops on those.
For those gun owners who do store weapons safely (weapon separate from ammunition, both in safes in separate rooms) I have no issue with you owning it since it's unlikely that your gun will ever hurt someone. My kid will never visit your home, but otherwise it's your choice and won't affect me in the slightest.

1. Can you tell that to the people that cut me off and speed by me day in and day out… they didn't get the message.
2. You think people who get their licenses revoked or suspended actually stop driving? hahahahahahahah
Umm, at least some do. I've known people who got DUIs in their late teens/early twenties and not one of them touched a car while their license was suspended. Maybe you know more assholes than I do, but most people I've known who got in trouble driving went nowhere near a vehicle until their license was reinstated. The risk if they were caught was too great to risk it since that significantly lengthens the suspension or turns it from temporary to permanent.
Oh, and I live in NJ, so I see my share of awful drivers every day lol! Pretty sure we're known nationwide for being the worst
DC may have you beat there. People here are so clueless behind the wheel that I quite often question how many of them realize that they are, in fact, driving an automobile.
Oddly enough, I just read thinking in the news about how they ranked all the states based on how crappy their drivers are, with 1 being the worst and 50 being the best. NJ ranked 32, so actually not that bad at all! We're actually the 18th BEST by those measures. The article I read didn't say anything about DC though, I don't even know if they were ranked.

This isn't true though. People who are caught being irresponsible with their cars have their driver's license suspended or revoked, just as people who are caught being irresponsible with their guns do. If I am caught carrying a weapon without a CCP or carrying one into a non-carry zone, I can have my rights taken away or my concealed carry permit revoked. If I get caught with illegal weapons or if I fire my gun in my backyard, there are going to be consequences.
And we did have twenty children (although they were freshmen college students) die in our area due to a bad driver a few years back. It was terrible. They were on a bus.
I'm not sure of every factor but it talked about accidents, fatalities, violations, etc. per X number of miles driven. So I guess you could also interpret it to mean that NJ drivers are still assholes on the road but are just really good at not getting caught and not causing accidents?? ;-) Either way, I'm using it to feel vindicated when people in PA (where I work) talk shit on NJ drivers, because PA ranked way worse!
Also, (not picking on you @penguingrrl I promise - just curious) - how do you monitor and make sure your children aren't playing in homes with guns? Do you ask before playdates? Do you assume that everyone who answers you is honest?
I'm genuinely curious because I've heard people say that before - that they won't let their kids play at houses with guns. I've also heard people say they won't let their kids play with unvaccinated children and I'm just wondering how parents enforce those rules and/or make sure parents are being honest in their answers. I have no idea how I would do that!

At this point I have to know someone very very well for my kids to play at their home (mostly its people I knew pre-kids or I'm there with them). As they get older I'm honestly not sure how I'll handle it because it feels weird to ask outright but I'm not comfortable with it. I mean, if I know a family has someone who hunts I would assume there are guns (I've only ever met one or two hunters in my life, both in passing) and suggest hanging out at my house instead. Beyond that I'm not sure yet. Other than trying to host mostly instead of sending them off.
I did sit my 6 year old down this summer and give her a talk about never ever touching a gun if you see one, get sn adult, etc. It was after the jiu jitsu professor at our dojo (my brother is a karate teacher so both girls take karate with him) was teaching a teen how to disarm someone and she saw the gun the were practicing on and asked what it was. She had never seen one. We sat down, discussed to never touch under any circumstances, showed her a few pictures so she would recognize one and discussed that they're dangerous. So if she came across one at a friends house she knows to get an adult, not touch and not let the friend touch.
penguin - I'm sad you don't visit the homes of hunters. You have no idea what you're missing out on - all of those delicious meals made from wild game :P
Your stance makes sense if that's important to you. I'm the same way about playdates with my kids, just for different reasons. My kids don't play at other parents' houses without me at this stage and probably won't for a long time.

It's not that I'm actively avoiding hunters, I just truly don't know any! There was one kid who was in my grade growing up who hunted, but his family moved away in 6th grade. He's the only hunter I've ever met. Nice kid. I've had venison once in my life and don't remember it. I'm not a huge meat eater

I know this comment it a ways up there but I am the one that said they bought an AR15 and I was 8 months pregnant. I am also the same woman who bought my husband 10 thirty round magazines for our AR15 for fathers day right before some law in Colorado was passed to only allow 10 round magazines versus 30 because its 'safer'.
Have you ever shot an AR-15? They aren't fully automatic weapons; only the military are issued fully automatic weapons and they don't sell full automatic weapons to the general population. It's not a sniper rifle either (like what you see on Walking Dead) contrary to what some people think. They are a mid-range rifle and they are popular because they are light weight and have very good accuracy that can be used to hunt medium to small game. We don't use ours to hunt people like you said up above but for target shooting! The damage a 00 Buckshot from a shotgun would be far worse than a .223 or a 5.56 which is what an AR shoots. I don't see people throwing a fit when a hunter says they use a 10 or a 12 gauge shotgun with a #1 Buck Shot but you say AR-15 and people are immediately more scared because they look more scary? You can customize an AR15 with different stocks, rails, and scopes to make it look more 'intimidating' but it doesn't mean it's the worse gun that someone can own because it causes the most damage.I don't get it.
Haha, oddly enough, I am not even heated over the debate because I am not the person that tries to make people believe the way I do. I don't mind that people are afraid of guns and think they should be banned because It's their opinion and their right to feel that way. If you haven't ever been exposed to them accept through the media then I understand even more why people are afraid and apprehensive about them.
Except for maybe that I'm missing my walking dead. And also that you ladies have had me wanting a bottle of wine for weeks now. I wanna get one but I feel so guilty considering it's nowhere in my budget. I've been hinting to D/H that I want some though. And I found out he got me a wine rack, so I would only be pleasantly surprised to find it filled Christmas morning...teehee:)
Also, super funny moment. My kid totally managed to get the bottem half of his body stuck under the couch thos morning. Lol he didn't get hurt or anything. It's pretty roomy under there actually. I'm just wondering how he managed to get stuck in there haha his little head was just popping out and he had this big smile. As soon as I started laughing at the cuteness, he started crying (poor baby) lol. You had to be there, but it was pretty comical atm
Lol

But did those 20 students die because the driver murdered them? As in, got up that day and thought "hey I'm gonna run my bus off the road and murder those innocent kids"? Or was it an accident?
I wonder where Michigan ranked on the driving poll. These people are bat crap crazy!!! It's like they've never seen SNOW before, let alone drove in it.
Lol
I don't have much randomness to add.

A random thing to add to yours - alcohol tax is pretty low in Germany, so a decent bottle of wine only costs about $5 / bottle.
Don't make people spend a lot on wine and collect a little extra tax so everyone has healthcare. I'm telling you, this is a country that has its priorities straight (Joking, there are plenty of things that are not ok over here. Also, the road layout is at least as bad as Boston to my never-ending annoyance when I'm trying to find a new place.)

Check this link out: https://jobsjusticedreams.wordpress.com/2013/01/29/gun-control-can-you-tell-the-difference-between-an-assault-rifle-and-a-regular-rifle/
It shows two different guns in the pictures. The second one you would assume is an assault rifle and the first one a regular rifle. Wrong.
Maybe we can further ruin this fun-loving thread with some abortion debate too :P
