Dogs and babies

Anyone else worried about how their dog will react to bringing baby home? Our dog has been the baby of the family for the last 11 years. He is a 100 lb great dane/ lab mix who is mainly a house dog. He very sweet and gentle, but has not spent much time around small children especially babies and is not used to sharing the spot light. He barks at strangers, but warms up to them immediately. He is getting old and has some mobility issues that are making him more and more needy. Any suggestions? Words of wisdom or experiences to share? Of course I won't leave him alone with the girls ever, but I still worry about how I'm going to manage my " 3 babies".

  • I used to work search and rescue with my previous dog. I don't actively work with a service dog now but I've learned quite a bit about training a dog. I have a 85 lb boxer rescue who is about 5 years old. We love him dearly but he's very high energy and we have our worries. Not only are we moving within the month but he's going to have to adjust to a baby soon too. That is a lot of change for a dog. Right now he gets walked about 3 miles twice a day (weather permitting). No way is he going to get this kind of exercise when we have a newborn.

He was never really exposed to kids since we don't have any of our own yet so we worried about him being aggressive or too pushy with kids. We've been trying to introduce him to kids slowly and one at a time in the neighborhood. He's been doing pretty well.

My advice, focus on your obedience. we spend 10-15 minutes a day "bonding" with commands. He loves treats and toys and he really looks forward to that time each day plus it keeps him attentive to commands. We also rigged a baby CPR doll to play infant crying sounds pretty loudly. It really freaked him out at first but he's adjusting a bit.

    Good luck!
