GTKY: Teachers!

I know there are a lot of teachers on this board, and I wanted to get to know you all better!

Where do you work (State)?
What do you teach?
How long have you been teaching?
Will you take any time off after baby?

I'll go first!

I teach High School English in California.  I have been teaching for 5 years and probably won't take time off since baby is coming at the beginning of summer vacation :)

Re: GTKY: Teachers!

  • Hi! I teach high school biology/zoology in Ohio. This is my 9th year teaching. Like I said yesterday, this is probably my last year as my husband was offered an awesome job yesterday. I would probably try to go back to work once all my kids are in school.

  • I work in Nebraska
    Teach 7th Grade Language Arts
    This is my 4th Year
I won't take any time off... I'm due early June. I figure I should keep my sick days for next year when I just need a stay at home and snuggle day with my new baby! :)

  • I'll answer just cause I'm on a teacher's contract (close enough!).

I'm a school psychologist -2nd year (3rd with internship). Work in Ohio with pre-k through 12th (yup, I get them all!). I might take a couple weeks off at the start of the year (or at least a stay home and start all the mindless paperwork so I don't get too behind!).

    My thoughts exactly!
  • I'm going to answer even though I'm still student teaching -- so close though!

I'm in Washington state, getting K-8 certification, in a 3rd grade class for student teaching.
Obviously I won't get any time off because I won't be and will not try for a contract for about a year. Just going to sub a few times a week hopefully!

  • I am/was a teacher. I work in PA when I'm employed. I taught 9 - 12th grade drama for a year, and subbed for 4 years. I've also worked for after school programs for 2 years. I'm certified in English 7-12. Job market for teachers in PA is very bad. Particularly in my region. More layoffs every year so no chance of new hires. I'm finally throwing in the towel and staying home with baby. Before the layoffs I was struggling with whether I'd stay home or not (ive always wanted to stay home) so this just made the decision easy :) I'm a youth leader at my church and teach twice a week and I LOVE it so a teaching degree was still valuable.

Yes - smart thinking!  I, stupidly, used ALL my sick days for my maternity leave with DS, thinking I'd have them built back up in no time.  I was not prepared for how much time I'd have to take off to stay home with my sickly little baby!  Three years later and I only have 6 sick days stock piled!

  • I teach 7th grade language arts in PA. This is my tenth year teaching. Since I'm due after school lets out, (last day is the 3rd and I'm due 14th) I don't plan to take any time off. I had my last in March and was out till the following year, so I don't blame anyone that plans to take time off. I'm saving my days in case I need them in the future- btwn two kids and me with Lyme Disease I may need them! :)
One and a half days till Christmas break! Woohoo!
  • I'm a substitute teacher! Not really looking for my own classroom yet so I can be home with my babies :)

I'm in NY and I teach K-6. Planning to work right up until I have the baby and pick back up again in the fall.
    Married 6.23.12
    Baby #1 5.10.13
    Baby #2 6.9.14
    Baby #3 EDD 10.1.15
    Life is good :)

  • I'm in PA.  I teach high school special education with a highly qualified designation in English.  I'm certified in both elementary and special education, but elementary jobs are extremely difficult (read: impossible) to come by in western PA.  So here I am.  This is my 9th year teaching, 8th year in my current position.  I don't love it, but I have tenure and pretty decent job security - and with all of the budget cuts and layoffs that have been happening lately, it'd be really stupid to switch jobs at this point.  I have my masters in educational psychology and eventually plan to pursue my school psych certification.

I don't plan on taking any time off after baby since he/she's due right as summer vacation begins.  I may need to take a week or two off right at the end of the year, depending on when he/she arrives (I'm due May 30th).

  • I don't currently teach,
I'm certified in WA state in Early Childhood Special Education (birth-8)
I taught for 1 year before I had DS/moved to CA
I don't plan on going back to work for a LONG LONG LONG time (I want 5 kids and don't plan on working until they are all in school)
  • I'll play since I work at a school.

I am a schoo nurse at PreK-8th grade private school in Texas. I absolutely love it, and I cannot wait until my kids are in school here with me! This is my second year doing this.

I plan to take 12 weeks of FMLA at the beginning of August so I will be home with baby from June-November.

    Married to DH 10.29.11

    DS born 6.12.14

  • I work in California, and I teach junior high drama and 8th grade English.  This is my 6th year.  I am planning on coming back part time (we have block schedule, so that would mean I teach every other day) for at least the first quarter, longer if I can manage it!

  • I work in Wisconsin as an elementary school counselor.  This is my 8th year.  I haven't decided how much time I'm taking off, but I know I will do some for sure.  My district allows for some great flexibility but I don't have many sick days built up after using them all on DD last school year.
Since I will be medically cleared to return at the start of the year, I don't have to do the straight 6 weeks like I did with DD.  I'm thinking of working three days and being off on Mondays/Fridays.  I'll try doing that through Thanksgiving.  DH did that from December-June when he stayed home with DD.  It was awesome!  (He's a teacher, too).

  • I'm currently not teaching because I just moved to a new state and only for 7 months and in the middle of the school year! I'm subbing to make the time go by!
I'm a special education teacher K-12. My last job (first real teaching job!) I worked as a Developmental Preschool Teacher for 2.5 years in Kodiak, Alaska! I'm moving again 1 month before our baby is due and we don't know which state yet so not sure how long it will be before I can get certified in a new state and start a new job with a new born! I miss teaching and having a classroom!
  • @Maneal is your DH a coastie? I'm on my phone so can't see your picture well but it looks like he's in odu's

Where do you work (State)? PA
What do you teach? 7th Grade Learning Support (includes math, LA, and English) and regular ed Language Arts
How long have you been teaching? This is my 3rd year in this job, but I did sub (including long term sub positions) for 5 years before getting a contract.  I can second the comments about PA being extremely competitive. It wasn't until I went back to school and got my certification in special education that jobs opened up. *EDITED* Initially I only had my elementary education certificate.  Now I have that, special ed, middle level math, and middle level English.
Will you take any time off after baby?  Yes, I literally just told my principal today and plan on taking off at least the first quarter, but maybe until Thanksgiving.  Not any longer though.

  • I teach in PA. I was VERY lucky to get hired right out of college, but I agree--it's really, really competitive here.

I teach 9th and 10th grade English. It's frigging awesome.

This is my third year. It's been a whirlwind.

And yes, I'm going back in August. Not looking forward to it, but it's not financially feasible to do anything else.

I am so glad to see so many other teachers in here! Way to go, us.

  • Hi there!

I'm a 2nd Grade Teacher at a Catholic School in CT. This is my 10th year teaching, and I love it! I'm due June 16th and the last day of school is the 13th right now (we'll see how many snow days get racked up this winter). If I take any time off, it'll probably only be that last week. Depends how big and uncomfortable I am.
  • 2nd grade teacher from NC here! This is my 6th and last year teaching. Can't wait to be a SAHM!
  • I am a 2nd grade teacher in the Northern Virginia area. This is my 10th year teaching. Wish I could take a break but with the cost of living here I will have to wait until the Army decides it is time for us to head to a new base. Baby is due the 17th and the kids last day is 3 days later. Hoping to make it as close to the end of school year as possible.
  • I teach elementary special education in Kansas, but taught my first 5 years in Missouri. This is my 6th yet teaching. I will be off for summer break when the baby arrives and will return when school starts, so technically, no.

@MNOpea That's awesome Congrats!!! We have a long way until that! Haha just happy he is finally gonna be an E4 :-)
  • I teach high school math in New Mexico. This is my 6th year teaching. (I can't believe it's been six years!). I might take a week or two off at the beginning of next school year. Since our plan to have a summer baby worked out, it won't be too long.

Where do you work (State)?   Texas
What do you teach?  I'm the Media Specialist for PK-5th graders so I teach a bit of everything and especially 21st century information skills.
How long have you been teaching?  12 years (2 in current position)
Will you take any time off after baby?   I have not decided, possibly 4 weeks.  It definitely depends on if baby is late or early since it is due 3 weeks after summer starts and there are 10 weeks total of summer break.

    • Place: KY & OH

  • NYC charter school teacher :) 4th year as a teacher specializing in leading a kindergarten block play program, so basically I get to spend all day facilitating kids' open-ended creative play and construction, as well as social skills in Harlem and the South Bronx. Kinda awesome. Due June 7 and will work as long as I can before I pop and will have to return in September.

  • I am a special education teacher in aurora Colorado.
This is my 7th year teaching....2nd in Colorado. I taught a self contained class of students with emotional disturbance in the south Bronx for 5 years before moving to Denver. Hardest job ever and I'm glad I'm not working there while pregnant!
I'm due the middle of June and school starts at the beginning of August here so I'll probably take a few weeks to a month off.
  • I have been teaching for 12 years in Fl. I am a Math Coach this year which I love. I have been out of the classeoom for 2 years and work mainly with adults. I am going to take my maternity leave in the beginning of the school year so I am planning on going back in Sept sometime.
  • I teach high school math (two levels of Precalculus this year) in NJ and this is my 12th year. I'm due a week after school ends and I hope to work until the end. I have to return at some point sorting the next school year but I'm undecided about taking a marking period off or not.
