Gender !!!!!!

I feel like I am in such shock and disbelief still!!! I went in yesterday for an ultrasound for my prenatal screening I was 12 weeks to the day. I explained some of my fears and worries and the ultrasound technician was very supportive and reassuring, he explained he knows what it is to identify and look for and that it is not his responsibility to tell me the results but that I can rest assured everything looks fine. After a sigh of relief he then asked if I wanted to know the gender. Ummm hell yeah !!!! He told me it was a girl and showed me the "equal sign" which is the formation of the vagina I am so excited I asked what the chances are of him being wrong and he was very confident, I even called my OB to ask her opinion and she said he is very good at determining gender especially so early and that she saw the pictures and agrees with his prediction I am very excited and want to start preparing, should I hold off and wait until my ob will do the gender reveal around 22 weeks? Has anyone else been told the gender at 12 weeks?

Some people get really upset when you say gender, instead of "sex of the baby".
    edited: dang autocorrect.

  • Seriously? I apologize if gender is offensive to anyone or if they have a problem with it

  • I'm so happy for you.  Since you got a confirmation from the OB I would be pretty confidant that they are both right.

As for telling people, I'm really not sure I could keep the gender a secret, I'd be telling everyone! :D

  • Well I didn't realize people would be offended The ultrasound technician, nurse practitioner, and ob all referred to it as gender
    I don't believe you.

ETA: But at least now you know there is a difference and people do get offended about it.

  • It's nice (and fun) that they gave you their guess, but I'd be saving my nursery and wardrobe pennies for a definitive answer after 18 weeks. My BFF is an ultrasound tech, and they are trained to know that those guesses (although educated) can definitely change.

  • Both times I have had friends who were told their baby's sex this early they were incorrect. I would hold off on telling anyone just quite yet or buying anything. Sorry to rain on your parade. It will be just as exciting between 18 and 22 weeks though.

Really? People use them interchangeably all the time in everyday speech. I've heard medical professionals say way dumber shit than this. OP, I wouldn't by anything yet unless it has a long return/exchange window.

I didn't say you said anything dumb. I think what you said was just fine. What I meant was that it is not at all impossible to believe that medical professionals would say gender instead of sex, especially given some of the other things I have heard people in the health care field say.

What you said wasn't dumb, just 100% incorrect.

Meh. I hear people use them interchangably all the time. Doesn't make it right, but in my experience the mistake is common.
I think layman's do use it incorrectly (clearly, that happens here all the time). But an OBGYN? Come on...

  • I was told by an us tech at 15 weeks that she thought my twins were girls but "Don't paint the nursery yet, it's honestly too early for me to say 100% that they are girls."  This tech had 10 years experience.

In the end (four weeks later at my next us) she confirmed girls.

  • If I'm considered part of the gender police, you don't have to worry about me. You aren't being a snot about it so whatever.

However, sex is the physical, and gender is the mental aspect of being a boy or a girl :)

Congrats on the probable girl! As with any sex prediction, no matter how far along you are, there is always room for error. Have you thought of names?

Seriously, I don't believe her. I find it hard to believe that medical professionals (especially her doctor, maybe the tech is used to uninformed patients spouting off gender multiple times a day and slipped up).

I'm not a doctor, I had 4 years of sex/gender education during my bachelors. I find it damn near impossible that a trained physician who has 4 years of bio, 4 years of med school, and 4 years of residency that all include human anatomy would use the terminology incorrectly.

OP, I'm sorry, you're not going to find many people who got an accurate PREDICTION of the sex of the baby at 12 weeks. Even the correct ones had a 50/50 chance of being correct. Sorry to pee on your parade, but there is a strong chance they could be wrong.

    Suck it up buttercup.

I'm pretty sure my OB with my last pregnancy used the word gender at my anatomy scan and he graduated from a top tier medical school. I have also heard medical professionals say "baby" instead of "fetus" or "bottom" instead of "perineum/vagina," for example.  First of all, outside of the social sciences, not everyone makes the same gender vs sex distinction, and not every medical professional has much background in the social sciences. Some physicians and nurses, in my experience, are shockingly insensitive to and uneducated about that stuff in fact. Second, many times they will intentionally use colloquial speech when talking to patients. So yeah, I find it completely plausible that they would say that.

Oh and I also have a social sciences degree.  Fun times.
Maybe my doctor and medical professionals are just better than yours.

LOL maybe they are.  Certainly there are some shitty health care providers in the world and I've run into my fair share of them.  That was kind of my point--sometimes even educated professionals say things incorrectly or say things that are stupid.

  • I do not normally comment on these feeds, however I am incredibly tired of people being called dumb and belittled for interchanging the words sex and gender.  Yes I understand there is a difference and you have every right to state your opinion.  However what may be intended to be educational too often turns out as self righteous rhetoric.  Stating that your doctors or better or that someone is being untruthful about the terms their doctor used is just immature behavior.  I am not normally a blogger.  I joined because I wanted people to talk to about a very important even in my life that I had no one else to converse with.  I just think that the way things are worded could be more educational and less condescending
    It's not an opinion, it's a fact.

If you think the comment about my doctor being better was serious, than your antennae are twisted.

This is a forum, not a blog. Blogging may be a better option for you.

I agree with this. I have heard many doctors use colloquial speech as well. Maybe they DO know, but don't think that WE would understand. Either way, this is an issue that I definitely take to heart, however I think there are sooooo many people that are ignorant to it. I like to educate, but not berate when I hear someone use the wrong terminology. There's just so many people who don't know the difference. It doesn't mean their stupid, just means they don't know any better.

I have used the word taint in plenty of times as a nurse. It makes me no less intelligent.

I just have a thing about identifying your baby's gender preference before they are even out of the womb. It's their anatomy, not their brain. I don't really give a rat's ass what you call it, but a lot of people don't know the difference.

  • It's too bad I don't work in the ICU anymore. It's not all that appropriate to use "wang" and "taint" in outpatient oncology research.

Especially when I deal with a totally different body part.

  • I am going to have a blood test done here in Houston at the beginning of Jan- at 11.5 weeks- it's supposed to be 99% accurate. Jack or Jill test. Apparently this isn't offered everywhere, generally only done with genetic testing and it's usually not covered by insurance- but I am super excited as I am DYING to know. They say blood tests are way more accurate than the ultrasound. Anyone ever taken one of these before?

It sounds like the M21 test. I was reading up on them recently (my doctor offers, but it's not covered and $1600 at their lab). They're amazingly awesome and accurate for numerous things outside of finding out the sex of the baby. You'll be the first person I "know" that gets one though. Exciting!
