1st Trimester

Spotting at 5 weeks :(

I just found out I'm pregnant with my first last week(had to pee on 4 sticks to see it was real!)  I made my first doctor's appointment a couple days ago.  I teach dance to younger girls a couple nights a week, and last night was one of them.  After I got home I noticed a bit of spotting on the TP after I went to the bathroom.  I've also had some cramping the past couple days the felt like pms cramping, and it seems I've heard that was normal so I didn't think much of it until I saw the spotting.  I'm still spotting today, only see anything when I go to the bathroom, and it's light red, not very much.  I called my doctor but they don't seem too urgent to call me back right now.  I'm just freaking out a little bit, I cried so much last night because I want my baby bean so bad!

I plan to take the next few days easy, I have a day job that is at a desk and no traveling in the near future.  I'm hoping this is normal for other people??  I'm already a paranoid mother I want my baby to be okay!  I know it's only barely there but I've been wanting this so bad!

Re: Spotting at 5 weeks :(

  • Both spotting and mild cramping are normal during those early weeks. Take it easy, as you plan to, and keep an eye on things to see if it becomes any worse. It wouldn't hurt to try to follow up with the doctor too, at teh very least for your own peace of mind.

  • Agree with pp... Also, if it helps at all I had period like cramping for most of my first trimester, sometimes it was very painful. I'm 29 weeks now and everything is just fine. Spotting and cramping isn't automatically a bad thing, sometimes it just happens. Taking it easy is probably a good idea and like pp said... Make sure you do get to talk to your doctor, it couldn't hurt! Good luck!

  • Thanks for words of encouragement!  I got a call back from my doctor and just went to the clinic to get my blood drawn.  They're going to check it again in a couple days to see if the levels have gone up, which would be a great thing!  So now I have to very impatiently wait and see.  And sit on my duff for a few days!

  • This is normal! You'll see in a couple days when your levels double just like they should.

As PP said, just try and relax until then! :)

  • I'm five weeks now. I was spotting in the middle of my fourth week last week. It started after I taught my zumba class. It went away after a few days. I'm nervousness bc my zumba class is tonight again... And I'm fearing the same thing will happen. Fingers crossed we both have sticky babies!
  • Yes good luck to you as well maria!

  • I'm five weeks too and noticed a little spotting this evening. I've had mild cramps for the past week. I see my dr. for my confirmation appointment tomorrow. I just really went everything to go well!
  • I was told by my ob that spotting is going to happen all throughout because everything in there is expanding. As long as there is no clotting you should be ok. (:

  • I'm right there with you!  The soonest my Dr could see me was almost a month out (military hospital, 3/4 of us are knocked up) so we went to the ER.  They managed to get me an appt for tomorrow after checking levels and doing ultrasounds.  They couldn't find a fetal pole, which doesn't necessarily mean anything's wrong as I may just not be far enough along for it yet.  I'm just hoping and praying everything's okay.  I didn't have anything like this with my first so I'm more than a little scared and the Dr's didn't give me any reason to be otherwise.  I'll be adding you to my prayers as well.  Good luck!

  • Spotting early on is pretty normal. Your lining is really sensitive early on as well, so working out, aerobic activity, and dancing can cause minor spotting (intercourse can be a culprit, too).
