Doctor Appointments: How often do you see your doc?

I am 8 weeks and 3 days pregnant. I had one doctors appointment very early, when I was just barely touching on 6 weeks, and doc said everything was good with baby! My next scheduled appointment is on Jan 6th. I see so many posts about people going to their doctor or getting ultrasounds every few weeks, and its starting to worry me. I was just going with what my doctor said. Should I be going in to see her sooner than my Jan 6th appt? I worry really easily and I really don't want this to cause me anxiety and stress but I just had to ask for your guyses input! Thanks!

I had an u/s at 9wks. I don't go back until 16 weeks because i have no risk factors or history of problems with my previous pg.

ETA: normal is to go every 4 weeks. Usually at 12, 16, 20 weeks etc. it can vary in the beginning depending on how far along you were at your first appt.

  • So then that sounds about right that I'll be going Jan 6th. It'll be a little before my 12 weeks but it was scheduled for exactly 4 weeks from my first appt where I was really early. Thank you for your comment I appreciate any information especially when it makes me less anxious

  • First appt at 8 weeks, next at 13 weeks
  • I've been going every 2 weeks, but that is because I am high risk. A normal pregnancy has fewer appointments.

  • I think most people who are going frequently are either high risk or having some troubles.
I am 11 weeks & have been 3 times and had multiple ultrasounds due to bleeding.
  • We go every 4 weeks as well.
  • *shrugs*
First appointment tomorrow, 13 weeks.  Was supposed to be last Thursday, 12 weeks, but got bumped due to scheduling error.  Not sure about after that.  Maybe once a month until 32 weeks?

  • I've been twice already and am going again on Friday. I've also had two ultrasounds and will have my NT on Friday.

It's pretty much amounted to every 4 weeks though. I went right before 5 weeks, 8 weeks, and 12 weeks. But I've also had two losses.

  • Once a month for now, whether it is every four weeks or not quite. I have had two appointments and two ultrasounds so far but the only reason i have had those ultraounds is because I had a problem that caused the first, they changed my due date a lot based on size in the first, then did the second just to double check & confirm the due date. I will not likely have any more other than the anatomy scan and possibly a sizing one at 36 weeks or so since my last baby was gigantic (with no GD). What you are getting sounds about normal for the average, uneventful, healthy pregnancy and is what I had last time around.

  • I had an early u/s due to previous losses but my first appointment with the doctor is at 10 weeks and from there it's every 4 weeks until sometime in 3rd tri when it goes to every 2 weeks, then weekly at the very end.
  • it should be once every 4 weeks. I've only been in so much bc of bleeding. that's also why I've gotten ultrasounds.

  • Thank you so much everyone. It's really good to know. For those of you who have had losses, I'll be sending extra positive thoughts and vibes your way :) If I had the opportunity to be at my doctor every week I would! Lol but I think we all would. Good to know that I seem to be on track. I hope jan 6th comes faster than I expect!

Every 4 weeks until I hit 30 weeks, then every 2 weeks until I hit 36 weeks, & then it is weekly until D-day!

ETA: My first appointment I was 7 weeks 4 days.  I'm not high risk.

  • My doctor wouldn't see me until 8 weeks then it's every 4 weeks until 28 weeks then every 2 weeks until 36 weeks then every week until delivery.

  • I feel like I've been there constantly! I went for a check-up before we started trying, got my positive pee test 2 and half weeks after that (I back-tracked and realized the cramps at my first appointment were ovulation cramps, cause they traced my day of conception to the next day!). The pee test brought on a blood test appointment, then a follow up 48 hour blood draw, then a dating ultrasound that put me at 6 weeks even.

Then I had an 8 week appointment and was on track for every 4 weeks - except I'll be traveling during weeks 10-13, so they want to see me Saturday (10weeks) before I leave. Plus there was the time I made an appointment for her to doppler the baby at 8.5 weeks after not being able to hear the HB at the 8 week appointment.

tl;dr - I live at the doctor's office :) I'm sure it makes a difference that my practice is hospital based, if I went to a midwife or even a freestanding practice I'm sure they wouldn't have monitored me as much for a first time healthy pregnancy.

  • Considering you saw doc at 6wks January is not too far. My doc does once every 4 weeks (first appointment not before 8wks) for awhile, then it goes up to every other week and finally once a week. I don't recall when the changes happen but it's once a month for quite a bit.

As for ultrasounds careful to expect a lot, women get them for all sorts of reasons. my 1st pregnancy I had an "extra" one around 32 weeks because my belly stopped growing so they wanted to make sure DD was still growing. There was another post about this but most have one at start for dating then not til 20ish weeks. Others just at 20ish weeks.

  • Once a month until 30 weeks is standard.  I've had a few extra appts because 1.  I was using a fertility clinic (extra tests/ultrasounds), and 2.  I wasn't discharged from the clinic until last week, so all of my first OB appts are just starting now.  At 30 weeks they'll be biweekly until 36, when I'll go weekly.

  • My office said they'll see me between 8 and 10 weeks the first time. I go tomorrow at 8w5d. I probably won't go back until 12/13 weeks if everything is good tomorrow. All these early ones I think are for dating or people who end up spotting or bleeding. It's normally good if the doctor doesn't want to see you all the time!

  • Once a month till 3 rd trimester, the bi weekly till 36 weeks then weekly. I went in at 7 &1/2 weeks for dating u/s. I go in today at 11 &1/2 weeks and will receive another u/s. I'm on progesterone, 35 and have had a lost before this pregnancy but have not been to doc more then usual . I'm scared and nervous today. Im so want to see a healthy on track baby!!!!
  • Every 4 weeks is normal during the 1st and 2nd tri.  Then it's biweekly until 35/36 weeks and weekly after that.

I haven't even had my first appointment yet!  can't wait for Monday.

  • Dr's paper work said once a month, then at the end they see you more. I had spotting early on and now other health issues that can effect pregnancy, so I'm going a bit more frequently...I don't get to see anything with US though, just the first couple of times to confirm a sac/living fetus.

  • I went to a fertility specialist so I was going twice a week until we saw the heartbeat. Now I go once a week and will continue to do so until I move to regular ob/gyn at 12 weeks. I will be really sad when I don't get to see my baby every week.
  • I went last week at 10 1/2 weeks (or what I thought was 10 1/2, he put me behind a week so really 9 1/2) and I'll be going again about a month from that appointment, at almost 14 weeks. They're also doing another ultrasound, but I'm not sure why? I'm not doing the nt scan and everything I've read says after the first ultrasound it's usually not till 16 weeks, sometimes 20 before they need a new one. Hm.
  • 1st and 2nd tri is usually once a month. Bi weekly until 36 weeks and then weekly until delivery.

    This.
  • Every doctor is different and every pregnancy is different.  Women without previous losses or who are otherwise healthy don't go in as often.  I go every month but one month I see the NP and the next I see the doc, and it rotates like that.  I only get two ultrasounds.  I had my dating one (that went perfectly!) and the anatomy scan at around 20 weeks.

  • i see my MW every 4weeks, only get two US, and once i hit 20weeks it will be every two weeks, at 30weeks it will be every week. that is the plan for now, if anything changes then im sure adjustments will be made.

  • I have had:

    -Pregnancy Confirmation (4w5d)
    -Dating Ultrasound  (6w4d)
    -First OB appointment (7w)
-Second OB appointment/NT scan (11w4d- TODAY)

Appointments now are roughly monthly, then will be every 2 weeks, then every week
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • I had an intake appointment (only vitals and forms) at 8 weeks, and am going every 4 weeks from here. No ultrasound until 20 weeks.

  • I had my first appointment and u/s at 6 weeks and another u/s at 9 weeks. I go back on the 27th for another u/s and Doppler (will be 11w2d) everything has been perfect with the baby heartbeat at last appointment was 171. No problems so I guess just depends on the doctor. My best friend didn't have her first appointment and u/s until she was 12 weeks.

  • Usually you go once a month, then I think around 30 weeks you go every 2 weeks, then after 36 you go every week. This time I think I'll be seeing an MFM and OB and be seen more than once a month, I hope!

  • My first appointment was today at 8 weeks with the nurse. Next appointment is at 12 weeks with the OB. So every 4 weeks, then when it gets down to it, every 2 weeks, then weekly.

  • I haven't had any appointments other than confirmation blood work from my primary Dr, my first obgyn apt is at 13 weeks. Every 4 week's after that until 36 weeks
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • I was 9 weeks at my first appointment, then we decided to do 13 & 18 (anatomy scan) for my next two rather than the traditional 12,16, 20. It's my second and I'm not high risk, so both midwife and I felt like that worked.
