Baby sign language

Anyone plan on doing this? I think I'm going to do it. I've started signing some to Caroline; obviously she doesn't get it or respond. They typically can't respond until about 10 mos so I know I'm way early but I'm tired of talking about solids, lol. Any BTDT moms have any tips?

I had a friend who's brother is deaf, so their family uses American Sign Language regularly. Her baby knew ASL very early (it was amazing!). I think the key is consistency. Her family used ASL all of the time, so her son picked it up easily.

My friend has a five month old who already knows two signs. Her parents were both deaf so she is fluent in ASL and it is necessary for her son to learn as well.

She taught me the top ten baby signs and said it is all about consistency and repetition. Everytime you say the word sign it. All caregivers should also sign to be consistent.

I am going to start in the new year and she said my LO should have one or two signs picked up by 6 months.

I did it with Dd1 and will do it with Dd2. I started with like five signs, I think. More, milk, drink, eat, all done...I think that was it. As she picked up on them and showed interest in using sign I introduced more signs. She eventually knew a ton of them depending on what she was interested in.

I plan on doing this. The instructor told me to bring her when she's around 6 months. She said that was the earliest they recommend starting. The class is through the hospital she was born in.

6 mos?!? oh man! Thats exciting; I guess I'll start putting more emphasis on it if it can be done that early. I thought it was much later!

I just do the basics, eat, milk, more. They picked it up fast, around 6-7 months

She explained that intellectually they can pick it up, but some have difficulty with the fine motor skills so as long as they make a sign in the right area (on the chin, in front of their chest, etc) then to praise them and show them the correct sign back.

I definitely plan on doing it. I just have to try and get H to remember to sign too.
I'm really bad at being consistent, but we started a few weeks ago so we could try and get the hang of it.

I did with my oldest as well and I found it very helpful, especially bc he was a late talker and signing really cut down on his frustration.

He would sign "please" while saying it up until like 3 months ago. It was adorable. He got all emphatic about it.

I have a bunch of friends that did it and liked it. Most just did about 10 signs.

I had an early talker and he doesn't throw many tantrums or get very frustrated easy, so it was never something I regretted not doing.

But some of my pals had babies/toddlers that were very high needs and would get frustrated SUPER easy and it seemed the signs helped them a lot.

I will not be doing signs with DS2 though.

Check your libraries too, ours holds "signing groups" for parents. It's a good way to meet other new moms and dads and learn about it.

I asked for materials on this for xmas. I heard to start using it around 6 months. It's neat seeing babies use it!

We started a few weeks ago just so that we could try and get the hang of it. I'm so bad at consistency, but I can't wait for her to start signing back.
