DS head update - prayers needed

We just met with the local neuro. She advised us to make arrangements for DD, pack our bags and head to the ER at Children's. She is fearful that there is fluid buildup on his brain. She said he needs a pedi neurosurgeon and we should be prepared to be there a while. I know you don't all pray, but I could use all the positive thoughts I can get.

Hi, I am not a regular poster here but have posted on occasion (mostly for car seat advice) so I hope it is appropriate to reply. First let me say i am pleased you have access to a good children's hospital.

My son was diagnosed with hydrocephalus at 3 months of age. I do not know what imaging they have done on your son at this point but if they have not done one, I suspect the first thing they will do is get an MRI. When an MRI is done on a baby they typically sedate and intubate them for safety and to have a stable airway. It sucks but is ok.

In my son's case it showed communicating hydrocephalus which means the inter-cranial fluid was not draining from his brain likely as a result of an IVH which is a hemorrhage in the ventricle of the brain. There are two common surgeries to treat hydrocephalus one is a shunt which is tubing that runs from the ventricle to the abdomen to drain fluid the next is a third-ventriculostomy which opens the passage way in the brain to allow the fluid through. Surgery is dependent on diagnosis and type of hydrocephalus if that is what you are looking at. The surgery is actually relatively quick and in our case they didn't keep us in the hospital following it for a prolonged period.

My son has a VP shunt and is now three and doing well, he has needed no revisions and has had no problems with it. We do take my son to physical therapy as he has a gross motor delay either from the bleed or the hydro but he is awesome and smart and happy and social. I know it is scary as hell and I am sorry you are going through this.

Yes @loveactually4 , this was before Thanksgiving. Children's has us scheduled for freaking May. We got in with a local pedi Neuro, who has made us wait three weeks, and she was super alarmed upon examining him. His head has expanded even more since the original scan. Obviously, with them scheduling us out so far, we were not as concerned. This totally blindsided us.

I can only imagine, I'm so sorry! I hope everything goes smoothly and you're able to get answers quickly.

If they do determine this is something that needs to be treated on an emergency basis, I would demand a sit down with whoever determined this "non emergent" and said it could wait. Totally unacceptable.
