"Dated Names"

Re: "Dated Names"

  • A few of my names are on the lists above but that won't deter me from using one of them

  • Another random thought... but in high school, I played soccer against a girl in another town named Reagan. Her parents had 4 girls and named each of them after a President - Reagan, Kennedy, Madison and maaaaaaybe Monroe? I can't remember the 4th. I always thought that was so cool. 15 years later and I still remember.

  • Basically any and all of at least the top 10 names (link below).  I agree on picking a timeless name.  My name is Kathryn Elizabeth and you'd have no idea when I was born :-)  Yes, it's common, but it's timeless and not trendy.  I want that for my kiddos, too!  I'd say you're safe with anything that a royal might be named, as silly as that may sound I think it holds some weight to timelessness.  Though, I do LOVE the name Mason for a boy, but I don't know if I would actually use it because of the non-timelessness of it.  It's cute for a kid/baby, but I just can't picture calling a grown man "Mason," it just doesn't feel right.

How about the President's last names as first names like Lincoln and Reagon?

Awww, really? I haven't run into any Lincolns and it isn't on any popular name lists... It's our boy name :(  We specifically made sure not to pick a popular name.

I know of two Lincolns just from FB friends' kids. There's also one in my DS's class.

    Nooooooooooooo!  :(

I know of quite a few Lincolns and we have friends that named their girl Reagon. Jackson and Carter would fit in this category too. Presidents seemed to be a trend with my friends in the past couple years.

    Clinton, too.

I hope Obama becomes a name trend.
  • I'd say all the top 10-15 names are going to be outdated in 10 years or so. Addison, Maddison, McKayla, etc. even my poor Olivia will be outdated.

I'm surprised at some of the names on this list.  A lot of these names are on my list, and I never really thought of any of them being "trendy."

I think people with Uneekly spelled names will be a tell-tale sign of the times.

I agree with this, however, my 97 year old grandmother's name is Awlyv (Olive) so maybe it was a cool thing back in the day, too!
That spelling reminds me of "cawfy tawk" Also, sad about Jackson. I was really attached to that name for a boy for awhile. I don't want them ending up a "Jennifer" though, so I guess we'll go with another pick if it is indeed a boy.

Ha @ElTrain5! She's from western PA...just about as Midwest as you can get for PA!
  • I see a lot of Kaylee and Lily's and a lot of Jack's
I think a lot of names are popular based on area you live in. I'm the south side of Chicago there are a ton of Maggie, Molly, Maeve
    Liam, Aiden, Jack

I think there's a big difference between "trendy popular" and "classic popular"  Trendy would be names that were way down on the list, and all of a sudden spiked to the top 50, like Jaxon/Jackson, Addison/Maddison, Cayden/Aiden/Hayden/etc, names using 'y' instead of 'i', any other 'uneek' spellings.  These names are what's going to be very dated in a few years.

Then there's the classic names that are usually always somewhere on the top names lists.  Recently, a lot of them have climbed rank and may be slightly dated because of when they peaked, but I wouldn't really consider them 'dated' because they've always sort of been around and have normal peaks and lulls.  These would be names like Olivia, Ava, Ella, etc.

Yes to this.  This is kind of the point I was trying to make.  ha.
Totally agree with this which is why we went with Emma for our first daughter. Well partially why lol

Charlotte is a bummer for me. It has been my number one girl name since reading "Charlotte's Web" as a child. I might still stick with it - popularity be damned!

  • William nn Liam is at the top of DH's and my list...I don't think its trendiness will turn us off, especially because William is one of those timeless names.

I really think the only names that will become really dated are the uneekly spelled ones, like PP said. Names like Ella and Sophia have gone through cycles of popularity for ages.

  • It also makes me wonder what names will even be like in another 20 because parents are so desperate now to try to be unique and cute that they often go to great lengths to create obviously made up names.

    ***

My guess is at some point the pendulum swings and people go back to "boring" names like, John, Mary, Ann, Tom, etc. They're actually becoming relatively rare these days...

I disagree that Jacob will become dated.  It has been the number one boys name in the U.S. since 1999.  It's a name from the Bible and derived from the name James (in some languages there isn't a different name for Jacob and James).  I think it will be the next James and hold solid at the top of the list for quite a while.  James was the number one boys name for a lot of decades and is still in the top 5.  I don't agree that it became popular because of Twilight.  It already was before that.

In the last 5 years I've know at least 10 Jake/Jacobs bring born to family/friends compared to the zero I knew my whole life before then. It's not new, no one claims it's a made up name or that it was unheard of or unpopular in the past, but it definitely has seemed to boom in the last decade.

Charlotte is the front runner for our girl. I also love the nickname Charlie which is a bit more modern. So she can choose later.

This is cool... you can look right back to 1880 and see the popularity of a name: https://www.babynamewizard.com/voyager#prefix=charlotte&sw=both&exact=false

IMO, it doesn't matter where the name ranks or how popular it is or how unique it is.  There is most likely someone, somewhere on this planet with that same name. Popular/trendy names are an ongoing cycle, generation after generation. I hate to hear that some of you ladies won't use a name because it's "popular".

I'm a FTM, so maybe naming a child is harder than I think.  I guess I'll find out in May/June.

Our girl name is pretty much set in stone; popular, trendy, or not; doesn't matter to me where it ranks.  It has meaning to me and that's all that matters.

Sophie.  It is my grandmother's name.  I was her first granddaughter, so I want to pass that name to my daughter if we have a girl... we find out on Friday.  Whoop whoop!

    Well said!!

Now that you list these names out, I also know a friend whose girl is Kennedy and I know a few Madisons too!  My friends must all like politics more than I ever knew!

  • My great grandma's name was Effie. I've never heard it used otherwise. Are they using it on a show?

Charlotte would be one of those "royal names" that I mentioned in my PP.  Right now it might be "classic trendy" but it's still timeless.  Use it girl!  If I have a girl she'll be Charlotte Elizabeth :-)  and I've had this name picked out WAAAY before Charlotte started to get popular.  It's just so classic <3

  • There are some names that I shudder when I hear people use them for their children- mostly because I have only ever heard animals (typically dogs) with those names.
If you search the top ten dog name lists- those are names I would never consider for my child and I think are worse than trendy /uneek names.
