Inane

Just figured I would start a lighter, non-political thread about nothing in particular. Not because I am uneducated or don't have what I consider well-informed opinions. I am happy to throw right out there that I am pretty much what you'd call a bleeding heart liberal who's all about equal marriage rights, support and social services that don't require drug tests, making access to a gun 10xs harder than access to mental health care, and improving public education by using the standardized tests as TP.

But I also love wine (weird....), and spa days, and high heels, and free style dancing in my living room with as little on as possible.  So I'd just like to say that if Miley Cyrus does not stick her tongue back in her mouth and keep it there, I may cut it off. Anyone else have something inane they want to share? And @peanutr1...don't you go anywhere, sistah.

  • I have this crazy love for 90s music.....its BAD. And I have no....NO shame in singing in the car.

With this knowledge please imagine a very sloppy drunk on Saturday singing Ace of base in her kitchen...good times

And more fun I have lived in nc for over 15 years so I have a nice southern drawl, but my central NY roots pop up, thus why in have said things like Ya'll that was Wicked Awesome".  Also I'm to the point now I talk to "slow" for my NY family, but Yankee fast for DHs family.

  • Was everyone forced to play the recorder when they were in elementary school? It's seriously the worst sounding instrument I've ever heard.

@MalRiggs - LOVE me some 90s music. I will sing Ace of Base with you any time!!!

  • Yay for adamwife's little performer! Our school had a recital yesterday. I feel you on being glad it's over, but for different reasons. Putting on a recital of 30 kids is not small feat.

@Drea926 I played recorder in elementary and teach it now. It's pretty bad when there's 20 kids playing together (can someone say "intonation"??) but just one or two kids is tolerable. If they learn how to blow gently and not squeak all over the place!
  • @kleigh926 you are full of surprises! ;-)

My random is that E will go to the same school, at the same time his aunts are there. They are 3 and 5 now.

My random contribution is that I have my motorcycle license. DH has ridden dirtbikes/motorcycles since he was a kid, and has had a motorcycle for years. I took a safety course, got my license, bought a bike... and was too scared to even ride by myself. So I sold the bike. And that is my extremely lame attempt to be cool.
Try a scooter! We had a scooter for a while (it died) and it was amazing! Didn't go above 35 mph, so it was never really scary. Super fun though. I haven't ridden it since before I was pregnant and I totally miss it.

  • Here's a random tidbit about me...I love rap music. Like, obsessed. The weekend before I found out I was pregnant with DS I was at a Drake concert. If DS isn't in the car, you will find me solely listening to Jay-Z, 2 Chainz, Drake, Rick Ross, and the like.

  • This reminds me of the SAHMs board.  I like it.  Here's my question: Glasses that match your outfit--okay for mom or stupid or just for grandma?  And for babies, pink glasses that don't match her outfit, okay?  Or should she get something else?

Drake will always be Jimmy Brooks to me.

I think anything is okay in either scenario, but personally, I love to match! I match everything whenever I can. I'm the weirdo that matches eyeshadow to her sweater or wears hot pink underwear because I'm wearing a hot pink t-shirt. I am that girl. :P

  • kelly - That deserves a post of its own.  Congrats on completing the dissertation!  My little sister just defended hers over the summer and watching her do all of the research, writing, and other prep work gave me such a new appreciate for PhDs!!!  And my little sis did it all as a single woman living by herself.  I can't imagine having babies and a husband to take care of (and deliver) during the process.  You should be very proud!!

  • my weird fact is that I have NEVER heard of the recorder. didn't do it in elementary school and have no idea what it is....

  • Everybody plays it!
    image

Here's my recorder story-- we were supposed to play "Candle in the Wind" on our recorders at our fifth grade graduation. However, during the school year my class had music at the same time that I had pull-out AIG (gifted ed) class. So I never actually learned to play.

The music teacher just told me and the other pull-out kids to fake it with our recorders during the song. It was hilarious.

    Anniversary

  • My random: Prior to becoming a SAHM I spent 7 years working in a living history museum. It was similar to Williamsburg or Sturbridge, but far smaller and far less well funded. I was the costumed person. I miss it terribly but less than $9 won't cover daycare and that's all I was earning after 7 years, a BA in History and some graduate work (was en route to a PhD but changed my mind due to job prospects). I hope when the kids are older I can return to doing that because it was seriously the best job ever! And I may have pushed DH to apply to professor positions near Williamsburg (there are two listings within an hour of there) because my lifelong dream has been to work there.

Other random: I've never seen a gun in real life or met a gun owner.

  • Kelly, congratulations!!! DH defended his dissertation last September and it's a long, difficult road, especially with kids (he was at new student orientation when I was sent in for my induction with our first and I was pregnant with our third at his defense)! I gave up on mine partially because I just couldn't quite do it with kids. I'm seriously in awe of you! Congratulations!!!!

Me neither! And I don't really have any desire to see one. I have met gun owners, but that's because I live in the South. The people love to hunt.

  • I was on 20/20 in 1st grade. My school was featured for it's progressive literacy curriculum. They featured me reading to my class. I still remember me saying, "Ready or not! Here I come!" and the green Laura Ashley type dress my mother put me in because obviously the parents knew this was all going to happen. DH is dyslexic, and I was fluently reading out of pre-school. I hope the genes swing my way... lol.

  • I just realized that apart from chiming in with my whole Drake will always be Jimmy Brooks opinion, I didn't give a random fact about myself. So here it is: I (and/or my places of work) have been on TV multiple times for some fairly weird reason.

I was in the national spelling bee in 1996, and I only made it a few rounds... BUT, I was also one if five contestants randomly selected to help Al Roker give the weather report while I was there.

And I was accidentally on Teen Mom 2 because they were filming at the courthouse where I work. I thought they stopped filming so I ran really quickly between the crew and the teen mom (Kailyn, I think her name is?) and found out a few months later that they were in fact filming when my coworker came in with a picture of her tv with me on it!

Also, the library where I work was part of a segment on The Daily Show, except it wasn't supposed to be our library, it was a story about a neighboring town whose library took away a kid's library card because he wasn't a resident and it caused a bunch of controversy.
