Do I need a new mattress?

I got a free crib including the mattress from a lady i know at work. I know her well enough to know she is very clean and she said she never took the mattress protector off the mattress. However i dont know that i should use the mattress... any opinions on this? It looks very new and clean. she used it for two of her kids, 3 and under.

    If you can afford it, I would.  If things are tight or you'd rather spend ~$150-200 elsewhere, clean the mattress really well (maybe more than once) and get a new mattress cover for it.  I would think that would be totally fine, especially since you know her and it isn't off craigslist.

    What @katiegummow said.  Getting a new mattress reduces the risk of SIDS but so does a lot of stuff.  I would really try to get a new one but if you can't afford it then just get a new waterproof mattress cover and some new crib sheets.
