My sons teacher alluded to the fact that she thinks he has it tonight at parent night. Sigh. Apparently he's disruptive and has trouble staying on task. And he won't write because he's ""not good at it" in his words.

We have a formal parent teacher conference next month but in the meanwhile we are making him sleep as much as possible and taking sugar out of his diet. I don't think the dr could even formally diagnose or treat it at his age (4). Sigh. The teacher kinda made it seem like he's gotta shape up or ship out

Ok can I say that this stuff annoys me - your kid is a 4 year old boy and the teacher should not be diagnosing with ADHD. Sorry but I think kids are way over diagnosed with this when they are just exhibiting typical kid behavior. Kids are rambunctious and easily distracted - some more than others. Kids don't like to do something they aren't good at because they are worried about getting made fun of. If it's too early for a doctor to diagnose then the teacher should keep her mouth shut.

Does he act like that at home? Typically if it only appears in one place and not in different environments it is just kid behavior. It is never easy to hear your kid isn't behaving, he's only 4! When they are that young the hyper and impulsiveness is the biggest indicator. Not the fact that he doesn't want to write. I hope that you can figure out something to help him out. Try not to stress it, easier said than done I know.

Oh he's hyper at home too, very impulsive and rough with Hunter. He can concentrate forever if its trains or construction toys. He plays for hours on his "job site" at home on the weekend. He's very much an outside kid

My teacher friend thinks he needs a structured school environment. I'm reading about this dye free diet and ADHD now. I'm now a crunchy nut mom lol

And my H and BIL had/have it so we gave the teacher a heads up. She kinda suggested it without actually saying ADHD. He goes to Montessori and maybe there's too much freedom for him?

OMG he's the worlds worst sleeper ever. Failed sleep trainer as a baby and still up at night. He had his adenoids and tonsils out in February bc he has having apnea and it helped a touch

I've had tons of students in the past few years who've been restricted from red dye 40 and gluten to control their (actual diagnosed) ADHD; so, that is definitely something you can look into if you feel its necessary (though I'd consult his pedi first). As far as the writing, what are his fine motor skills like? I've also had many students who don't like writing/claim they just can't do it when its turned out to actually be more of a fine motor problem for them.

They do sand paper letters at school. They feel a cursive letter that's textured in sandpaper and then they are supposed to write it with chalk on a little chalk board. He's been feeling the letters with his left and then trying to write with the right. So we aren't sure if that's him being ambidextrous or if he hasn't figured out his hand preference yet. The teacher doesn't want to force him to pick a hand. I'm kinda considering asking for an OT evaluation

And we are going to cut out all the dyes and stuff. I noticed a few weeks ago that he would go crazy after eating a certain type of yogurt. Well I read the label and it had red dye in it. I changed him to a yogurt with out the dye (and more sugar!) and he was fine. I think there's a lot of validity to the dye theory

Just seeing this and it breaks my heart. He could have issues that she just doesn't want to handle, but they are probably normal four year old issues. ADHD is so over diagnosed in young children and the drugs are so over prescribed. Yes, it is a real condition (there have been stories to the contrary), but it seems too early to diagnose. I hope you can find out why he is acting this way, especially if he is not acting super hyper at home and can play for long periods. Maybe he just doesn't like his teacher?
