"Dated Names"

So, my sister's name is Stacy.

Was talking to her about baby names today and she went into quite the speech about how she hate her name. This is primarily because her name tells you exactly when she was born (the early 70s).

Interestingly enough, when it came time to name her own daughter I the mid-90s my sister picked a trendy name (Riley, which I like), but then hyphenated it to Riley-Jayne. I should mention she regrets the whole hyphen situation and does not recommend it.

This made me think...what names that are popular now will be "dated" 20 years forward? We can meet back in this board in 20 years and see who was right...

Re: "Dated Names"

  • Jackson will probably definitely be one
  • Loading the player...
  • Only fair if I start...my guess is any boys name with a "y" in the middle.

Although, my grandfather was born in the 1920s and was named Graydon. So maybe it just comes back every 100 years or so.

Yes.  Any name rhyming with "aiden".    Also agree on Jackson.  Maybe Mason?  I like that name, it was a contender for DS but DH thought Mason would be the next Jason.

Possibly Isabella, Ella, Sophia, etc. too.  I work with new parents and babies and see lots of these.

  • For boys I think Colton, Easton, Cullen, Grayson, and all the 'aiden' names for sure.

For girls I think Ellie, Payton, Quinn, Addison.

  • Go to babynamewizard.com and check out the name voyager tool. It is so cool! You can type in any name and it will show you it's popularity since the 1880s... Any graphs that have a single peak like a witch's hat are generational trends. Very interesting!

  • Ava. There's 2 or 3 in all of my classes.

Any of the names made popular by twilight: Bella, Edward, Jacob, Emmet, etc.
    imageBabyFruit Ticker image
  • Sophia, Olivia, Harper, Madison, Bella, and Peyton

Anything that rhymes with aiden, Jackson and all of its spellings, Liam, Oliver, and probably Mason too
  • Freakonomics has some fun articles on this ...they talk about how a few people start using names...then they become too popular and now names such as Heather (my own name) are stripper names lol they occassionally analyze what names they think will be popular in 3-4 years. They are not that accurate, but it is a fune read.
  • I think Zoey and Chole for girls as well and basically every name above.

But the movie "Heathers" is awesome...so you always have that!
  • I agree about the Twilight names - Bella, Edward, Reneseme (sad to say I actually know one of those).

Basically the top 5 for both boys and girls right now. They have been very popular for a few years and I think people are starting to get 'name fatigue' and will stray away from them and their associated names. I know that happened with Kristen/Kiersten and a few other girl names. Haven't heard of a baby girl named Kristen in forever.
  • My name was #1 in 1986, my birth year. We have 11 staff members at my job, 2 of us have the same name.

Awww, really? I haven't run into any Lincolns and it isn't on any popular name lists... It's our boy name :(  We specifically made sure not to pick a popular name.

  • I agree with most of the aforementioned names. Last night I was behind a minivan with two little stick on football helmets on the back. Owyn and Evyn were the names underneath. Seriously? I feel bad for those kids. The y just makes those names look silly, in my opinion. I would venture to say that those will be out of style in 20 years like @internationalkate said.

Omg Heather a stripper name geez. That is my name. Don't hear many Heathers anymore. I only saw the movie Heathers a few years ago and I am almost 40. Lol

I know of quite a few Lincolns and we have friends that named their girl Reagon. Jackson and Carter would fit in this category too. Presidents seemed to be a trend with my friends in the past couple years.

I assume Lincoln will continue to become even more popular now that Kristen Bell and Kailyn Lowry (from Teen Mom) both just used the name for their new babies.

Yeah a friend of mine named her boy Jackson 3 years ago. Another friend just had a baby on Friday named him Jackson. First one uses Jax as nickname second jack.

  • I'm surprised at how many times Quinn was mentioned. It's my best friends middle name and I had always thought it was an older name.
  • I'm surprised at some of the names on this list.  A lot of these names are on my list, and I never really thought of any of them being "trendy."

I think people with Uneekly spelled names will be a tell-tale sign of the times.

I agree with this, however, my 97 year old grandmother's name is Awlyv (Olive) so maybe it was a cool thing back in the day, too!
  • Girls: Olivia, Sophie, Marley, Harper,

Boys: Axl (I currently know 4 babies named this),Oliver, Jackson, Max

  • Agree...I have a Zoey and a Chloë. They are pretty common names right now.
  • I'm surprised at Quinn also...I live in Oregon and have never heard of a little one being named Quinn or Reagan for that matter also. So I think it depends on where you live. I know a lot of Avas, Jacks, Jackson's, Sophia's,

  • I think the name Quinn is cute, but it reminds me of a stripper because of Quinn on How I Met Your Mother. I have a girl's name that I have loved since I was little, but recently I hear it EVERYWHERE, so now I just don't want to use it because I think it's become trendy and annoying :( Oh well.
