Baby Clothes, where do you shop?

STM+ moms, where do you buy your baby/toddler clothes?  I just picked up a few sets of toddler clothes from Target for friend's kids and was kind of surprised at the price ($15.99 for shirts, 12.99 for pants).  Am I cheap?  Or are there better prices out there?

  • FTM but I've found that the Carter's outlet store has really good prices

  • This is my third and I am super cheap so I shop and thrift and consignment shops. They dont wear the clothes for too long so most found at the thrift store for practically new.

I got a bunch of expensive gymboree clothes for .99 a piece. Also I have been picking up footed sleepers for 1.99, which is way better than the 12.00 the stores try to charge.

  • Third time mom and frugal as hell so I go to consignment shops and thrift shops. My older boys get new clothes for school and Christmas.
  • I'm pretty cheap, since they grow out of them fast and he's in daycare all week (I don't like to spend a lot on clothes that just get roughed and painted up).  You can get pretty good deals on the basic stuff at target.  I also do thrift shops, goodwill, and get a bunch of hand me downs.  Also if you're kid is a normal size, you can hit up clearance racks for future seasons to save.

  • Mostly Carter's and Gymboree. I get a million coupons from Carter's and Gymboree has gym bucks (get $25 for every $50 you spend or something like that) so the prices aren't too crazy. I've never had issues with quality for either store. Now that DD's growth isn't as drastic month-to-month, we get more wear out of her outfits so I don't mind spending a bit more for something I think is really cute.
Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I buy a lot of stuff from Target. Not sure what you bought but I always get the clothes on the table that are $5 each. I just bought a pair of jeans there too for $10. The vast majority of DS's clothes are from there.
We also shop at Carter's a lot. They have great sales. Their pjs are my very favorite.
I also buy a lot from...Walmart. Yep, I went there. Go ahead and flame me.

  • I do lots of consignment stores then Carter's and gymboree. I never buy without a coupon and usually wait until things are on sale and use a coupon on top of it. I rarely end up spending more than $8-10 for any item. I've also had luck at JC Penney (okie dokie) and kohls (jumping bean) which are their brands. I've found them to runs bit bigger which is nice for in between sizes. One negative about gymboree is that their clothes are totally inconsistent for sizing. Dd us in 2t and no joke there is a 3 inch difference in their 2t pants. That's a bit ridiculous!
  • FTM but I shop at the consignment store Once Upon A Child. They have very fair prices for quality clothes, shoes, toys, and even cribs.

  • The Carter's store, A Children's Place, Crazy 8's, Kohls, and Old Navy are my regulars.  I buy a lot of my basics and such at Kohls and Carters and look for fun things are the other stores.

  • I have stepdaughter, but usually I find clothes that are great quality at Goodwill and our local thrift store. My mom has also had fantastic luck finding great items at garage sales. Like a PP said, my SD grows so fast that it doesn't make sense to buy her brand new clothes all of the time. When I do buy new clothes, I really like Kohl's and JCPenney--she is just getting into a size 7 so she doesn't fit the "baby" clothes stores anymore.

However, I did stop in to Carter's the other day with SD to pick out an outfit for LO (because SD was REALLY excited to be getting a sister) and they have pretty decent prices and their clothes are really good quality--and the store I went to had a large clearance section with a lot of good items too.

  • For the infant stage I like target, kohls and Carter's. Now that DS is a toddler I found that I can get really good deals at children's place and crazy 8 and kohls if I wait for sales and combine with coupons. They are usually cheaper than target with sales and coupons.
  • Another plus for Carter's - a friend of mine told me that if you buy clothes and keep the tags on you can return them at any time for store credit.  Her little girl spent forever in 6-9 mo and then skipped directly to 12 mo and she was able to return all of the 9 mo stuff no problem.

  • Garage sales, thrift stores and swap sites. I desperately try not to spend more then a few bucks on a piece of clothing. They get stained and don't last long enough to spend a crazy amount on. Plus I'd rather have lots of options then just a few.

  • I've been using a consignment website that checks all their clothes. I haven't looked at toddler prices but the baby ones have been great. They have fancy brands and also regular brands like Carter's etc. I posted this before and have a referral code that will save you $10 on your first purchase but I'm mobile right now so I'll post it a bit later!

I got a pair d little leather Janie & Jack moccasins for $1.99 with shipping that look like they had never been used. Also got a J&J sunhat for $4 with shippig that still has the tags ($30 originally!).

FTM here.. I got some Carters clothes on a good Black Friday sale.. Here we have several second hand stores for baby items. They have onsies for $1 each (I even found one store had them buy2get1 free and they were marked $1 each). I look at each thing very closely for stains and if they look gently used I have no problem buying them. I can't see myself paying full price for something LO may stain the first time she wears it. I have also been looking on Craigslist, although I haven't made any purchases from there yet. If I found something worth buyingI would had DH go with me to buy them. I am wishing it were yard sale season again, lol.

Honestly, I shop at thrift stores and the Facebook Online Garage Sale groups.  I've got probably 40 pieces of clothing for her right now and I haven't spent more than $20 on all of it.  As long as you wash it, it doesn't really matter.
@torilea I am totally with you on this. No sense in spending a lot on something she will only wear for a couple months and will probably stain.

Not sure if you got the numbers right or if your friend didn't know, but 9 months is the same as 6-9 months. 12 months is the next size up. So 0-3 = 3 months, 3-6 = 6 months, etc. they trick with those numbers. ;)
  • I shop all over. But I always look for sales, I rarely buy anything without a coupon unless I have no choice or its "cheap".  My DD is super petite and does not grow out of clothing fast. So depending on the item, I may spend a little more.  She is 18 months and still wears clothing ranging from 9 mos to 18 mos. If she was a fast grower I may shop differently.

I do love carters, like a PP mentioned Osh Kosh (carter's sister store) but their sizing is so inconsistent, but the demin is really good. I'm a sucker for overalls.

I am at target all the time, $5 tables are awesome. I'll do old navy and gap when there are sales.  Same for kohls and BRU.  I'm not really into the graphics and matchy clothes, though I have a few so I only shop at Gymboree/Crazy 8 occasionally and when on sale. Children's place I love the PJs, but not the clothing that much. I do like H&M if you get lucky, and then I do splurge at Zara on some items, mainly shoes because DD is so tiny and narrow footed, they are euro sizing and fit perfect (though I wait for the semi annual sales).  I also do consignment and ebay too.  Saved a ton on winter coats (her one is a pea coat which was tags on gap for $12 bucks shipped!), pre-walker shoes, dresses, etc

  • I bought most of DDs stuff at Carter's for her first year and mostly shipped during their big sales. I also watch for Gymboree's $12.99 sales and similar sales at Crazy8. We had tons of hand me downs but I haven't bought any second hand stuff. My Once Upon a Child isn't that great. Gymboree is my favorite brand--so cute and I've found their clothes hold up the longest (a lot of my hand me downs were from there and she was the 3rd to wear them). The Carter's stuff shrinks over time.

  • @babylimas, that was what I was thinking. 6-9 months is marked 9 months at carters which is followed by 12 months (a/k/a 9-12 months). FTM's take note because that totally threw me for a loop when I was shopping for DD last time! If it is marked 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months...it means 0-3, 3-6, 6-9, 9-12. I don't know why they couldn't just print that on the tags to make it easier but what can ya do!

  • I get mine at 2 different places ;
Childrens Place - I work there and get my discount but only got a 2 full outfits because it was still expensive.
Kijiji/thrift store - we got 3 large garbage bags full of clothes 0-18months from kijiji (Canadien version of Craiglist) and the woman charged us 30$! And I did shop at Vallue Village a couple of times when I found out, mostly gender neutral because it was to early to know and for a onesie it cost me .99¢
My mother even warned me not to buy anything else because people will be buying more for my baby shower, but I do want to sneak a few things ;)

Carters too, had really good prices, everything in the store right now is 50% off and I received coupons for January. • Grandmas....they buy about 90% of DD's clothes.  As far as what I do buy, I get some things at Once Upon a Child (I only buy things with the tags still on them), Burlington, or clearence items from Kohls, Old Navy, Baby Gap, Gymberee, or Children's Place.  I always have a coupon before buying even clearence items.  I'm just that cheap!  The Grandma's on the other hand, are buying DD Juicy Couture, Janie & Jack, and fully price Baby Gap.  More power too them- it's cute, but way out of my budget!
  • We have a couple of great kid consignment places that I frequent. In fact, I haven't bought any baby gear new this time around thanks to them! For new stuff I go to the Gap mostly ( their kid jeans hold up sooo well) and occasionally Carters. I also shop a lot on Ebay. I've found brand new Matilda Jane for a fraction of the cost new.

  • Oh--I also don't buy too far ahead. DD is huge and flew through sizes much faster than I expected. It pains me when I can't shop clearance for next year but even at 15mo her growth hasn't slowed down enough for me to feel confident that I'm getting the right size. I have way too many clothes she barely wore--but hope I can sell them down the road.

  • I'm surprised at how many people are saying Once Upon A Child! I have found their prices to be incredibly high for consignment merchandise. We have some great kids consignment stores in my area though...the clothing is literally flawless and looks unworn and is usually a few dollars less than OUaC. A lot of what I found at OUaC, looks very worn and is higher priced than I felt was worth it. Must just be the one in my area though! They are in a high end retail plaza so maybe their rent requires them to charge higher prices as compared to the individually owned consignment stores!
  • We are lucky and get lots of hand-me-downs from family members, but my favorite places to splurge are Gymboree and more recently, Hanna Andersson.  We've had a hard time with fit, and Hanna Andersson pants fit her like a glove.  They're expensive but are made really well, and most importantly, they're adorable.  :)
