Baby Names

Maverick

I find out in 9 days whether I'm having a boy or girl but I still want to keep working on names for each. I told my father that I like the name Maverick and he acted as if that was the most insane name ever. Thoughts?

Re: Maverick

  • I sort of agree with your dad.

It's not the "most insane name ever", but it's up there.  I think the problem with putting such a "cool" name on a kid is that it gives the kid sort of a big shadow to live up to, sort of like maybe naming a kid Adonis, KWIM?

If you must, middle name it, but I would say definitely go back to the drawing board on a FN.

  • Way to cool for me..........I am just not that cool!
  • I think of Top Gun and I also think its a big name to live up to. But, there are worse names out there and I actually don't mind the name.

Don't worry, I'm working on it.

  • I like the Irish name Maeve a little better.

I absolutely hate it. I think it is one of those "trying too hard to be cool" names.

First thoughts are Tom Cruise and Palin/McCain, the latter being very negative for me at least,

I think it makes a great name for a sled dog, but a terrible name for a child and adult.
    Pretty much all of this.
  • I love it. Most people here don't. We used it because we really liked it not because we have anything to prove.

  • haha I like it too but people are all different. I don't really understand the trying to hard category because I think you should try hard to name your kids cool things. haha. on the opposite side of the spectrum, I cringe when I hear people name their kid James or Matthew or Anne (unless it is after family--- then it's cool) -- I am a katie and there are a million of us--- i don't know why but I just have a strong conviction to give my kids names that are cool. :) I try too hard for my kids names and I love it!

I don't mind traditional names either. DS has a "trendy" but solid name and DS2 will have a very traditional name. I think I'm all over the board when it comes to names.

  • I would secretly love to use it as a middle name. I never really found anything that it went with though. I personally could never use it for a FN because it does sound like one of those "we want our kid to be super cool" names. That is why I think it fits better in the MN spot.
  • My brother had a doberman named Maverick so I have a really hard time picturing it on a person. Especially since it's such an... intense name. Sorry, but the dog really ruined the name for me.
That said, it's your baby. If you like it than discuss it with your husband/whoever. You could always use it as a middle name instead as others have mentioned.
  • If your kid turns out to be a shy and nerdy kid, that name is going to be a bit out of place. I think it's a white trash name, like naming your son Colt, Remington, or Pistol, so I would not use it. The biggest connection being Sarah Palin, which is not good association at all.

Wow. An interesting assumption but untrue. At least for us.

I'm not saying that you are not entitled to your opinion you certainly are. I guess I just don't see it like that.

  • If you're going to name a kid Maverick, you may as well also tattoo "Mom and Dad try too hard" on his forehead. Same effect.

Oh gosh, I should clarify...I am 100% aware that a name does not equal the associations we have to a name. For example, Britney and Crystal aren't all strippers, but many people associate those names with "stripper names". I actually have 2 friends that named their kids Mav/Maverick, and while I love them, the name still screams Texas white trash to me. They are not white trash by any means, but it's the association I have. In Texas a lot of people name their kids after guns/rifles/ammunition and I just lump Maverick in with that because of the Top Gun/Palin thing. Sorry if I offended you!

@joy2611 ohhhh! A twist in the drama--- didn't even realize that ironically it was you that said you liked my sons name- Oakley- on the Persephone thread, where you also were a bully to that other lady. maybe you have stopped caring about being cool but need to start caring about being kind?
