My observation as a boy mom becoming a girl mom RE: Clothes

All I ever heard when I was pregnant with my son and before I knew the gender of this one is that "Girl shopping is so much more fun!"  It gets old.  lol.  However I had a lot of fun shopping for my son's clothes, never had an issue finding cute things, and always got great deals.

So now I'm thinking I'm screwed financially to be having a girl, shopping is going to be SO MUCH FUN.  Only its not.  I'm overwhelmed by pink.  In fact the few things I have purchased I bought because they were the only thing in the store that looked different from everything else and not varying shades of pink.  I've literally bought a couple things and I've been out at least 7 times to scour for sales and see what there is.  I did not have this problem with Asher.  I felt like everything was a good deal and that there were plenty of different things to choose from.

My husband gave me the American Express the other night and told me to go have as much fun as I wanted shopping for baby girl.  I came home with 1 thing.  1.

Vent done.

Re: My observation as a boy mom becoming a girl mom RE: Clothes

  • I'm not much of a pink fan so if I have a girl she will wear more navy blue and grey and white than pink. There are some super cute non-pink dresses on Zulily today!

  • I was so excited to buy a baby girl outfit for a baby shower. There are soooo many options it was overwhelming. I am a complainer about how few options there are for boys in some stores though. So I guess I'm not happy either way? lol

  • Also not big on pink. Newborn and 0-3 is hard because of onsies and such and everything now being seasonal. Hang in there. It does vary more as they get older!!

  • I have similar issues with the pink. It gets better for older baby/toddler clothes, if that helps.
that does help.  My sister gave me a bunch of my niece's stuff and it is so PINK.  I don't hate pink, I just don't want EVERYTHING is her closet to be pink.

  • I agree, it gets much better with older infant/toddler clothes. My daughter hardly wears any pink. I usually find baby gap has plenty of non-pink options.

  • I don't like excessive pink either and if I had a girl, I would be looking for anything besides pink. It has to be tough to find things that aren't!I just get so tired of boy stuff only ever having sports stuff, stupid sayings on them, or pictures of puppies or monkeys.

  • I have always had a hard time shopping for DS. I just don't like a lot of what I see for boys. I think if I had a daughter though, I would be so overwhelmed with all the options I wouldn't know what to buy. When you go into a store it always seems to be 70% stuff for girls 30% stuff for boys.

  • I buy a lot of DD's clothes from old navy and gap because I can find onesies and shirts without stupid animals/sayings on them and that are various colors and prints with nothing stupid on the front and not overly frilly.

I'm having fun with boy shopping but I feel like I need to peek at the girl stuff and buy things for DD just to keep it fair. I think the girl stuff is way more fun when they are a bit older.

I actually think DS's wardrobe will be diapers, t-shirts/onesies, and baby legs for the first 3 months anyway. Tiny baby clothes just aren't that exciting. Eta: except for the whole tiny part. :)

  • Hmm, I didn't have any trouble finding and buying tons of non-pink stuff...  I'm not a big fan of pink either. I found lots of orange, turquoise, navy, purple, gray, etc.  If I bought 2 pink items it's a lot.  What stores have you been shopping?  I enjoy shopping for DS but find that most of the clothes for little boys are uber casual, it's hard for me to find clothes for him for nice outings/holidays/dressy occasions :( It seems to be the opposite for girls lol.  Sigh...

  • Its true, I think a lot of it is overwhelmed.  I'm the type of shopper that likes that scan a store and move on if I see nothing.  When you're shopping in Carter's or Gymboree for a girl, you need to be prepared to really look through stuff.  I just can't do that and still call the shopping trip fun.

Meee too.  They're freaking adorable.  And practical.  This kid (and maybe DD) will rock them for basically the whole summer.

DD is super rash prone and we do an hour or more of naked butt time a day. Baby legs are a total essential. Add a play dress and you would never know she's got a bare booty. I plan on buying like 20 pairs.

  • I find that Carter's and Gymboree, sometimes even Children's Place has a ridiculous amount of overly-frilly things. I think Old Navy and Gap tend to have less pink and more neutral colors.

  • I feel the same way...I always seem to find adorable boys' clothes, and I love shopping for my nephew!  In fact, I went out this weekend to purchase our first girl outfit and came home with a new outfit for him instead!  I couldn't find ONE THING that I liked.  I'm not averse to pink, but does everything REALLY have to be the same hideous shade of pepto bismol pink?  I know this isn't a huge deal, but everyone has been asking if I'm so excited to be shopping for a girl...and I'm just not.  Maybe once the spring/summer clothes come out we'll have better luck!

  • I'm not sure how you feel about spending some decent money on a few items, but DH and I found purple and blues at Janie and Jack on clearance for our little girl this weekend. We also hit up gymboree's clearance rack and found a lot of yellows, greens, vibrant blues and such. DH doesn't love pink and I agree, I don't want her whole closet pink. (we bought 6 months plus according to the rough estimate of seasons. :)

  • My wallet is probably breathing a sigh of relief that we're having a boy. I could go crazy for some pink tutus. However all I need for a boy is blue stripes. I have so many navy and white stripes in my closet and this poor little boy is going to match me all the time! I can't get enough of the sailor look, don't know why. Good luck with your shopping.. and if you need some help, send that AmEx my way . ;)

Be careful with this, Janie and Jack tends to run large.
FWIW, my 15 month old wears 6-12 & 9m clothing.  I have so many improperly seasoned clothes because I thought I was being smart and buying big ahead of time.  I was not.  Fail.
Luckily, I live in a place where our seasons don't really change.  I am sure those Santa jams I bought on clearance last year will look great this summer. =((

  • Yup, my first is a boy and everyone told me how much more fun shopping for girl clothes is. I've only had a hard time finding pants for DS. I found out this was a girl and I have only bought 1 thing. My friend gave me two huge boxes of girl clothes so I dont think no need to go shopping.

  • Oh no - when we thought we were having a boy, I went shopping and HATED the majority of boy clothes.  I only like very soft blues - no sports, construction equipment or other silliness on them either.  I had a hard time, but did find some nice things at Macy's and Baby Gap.

Once we were told it's a girl, I have been in baby clothes heaven!  But I'm a super girly girl - I love the pink and ruffles and lace :)

  • I honestly think I'll have an easier time shopping if this baby is a boy.  I didn't (and still don't) want DD to live in pink and I refuse to buy anything that refers to her as a princess which starts to limit my options.

Carter's has some great outfits, though I haven't had to look at the infant stuff in a while.  I'm also a fan of Old Navy - they use a lot of bright colors.

  • I am picky about that too. All my friends have girls, and it looks like we won't be having one... lol but when shopping for them I am always anti-pink and usually anti-frilly so man, is it difficult. I have never been into really 'girly' things even when I was a girl so ah well. I divert to animal print for a 'cute' but not over the top options for baby girls, usually. It says I am a girl, (even if the baby has no hair), but doesn't scream 'kaopectate'. That and purple. Love the color purple.

Although I have a boy EVERYONE else in my family/friends have girls so I've done a lot if girl shopping. I completely agree with you! I get all if my girl clothing from places like TJMaxx or Marshall's because you can get the quirky designer baby clothes there for a decent price! Only down side is they usually get stuff once the season is over so I was always buying ahead.

Me too.  At least, if my mom and husband don't win the argument that babies need explicitly gendered clothing.  Seriously, who cares if strangers can tell whether the baby is a boy or girl?
  • Blasphemy - all of you!! ;) pink is my favorite color...the majority of this baby's clothes are pink with a few other colors thrown in. I bought one purple outfit and dh about had a cow since our college basketball team's rival has the color purple.

As for those who love baby legs...if you are able to sew - there are lots of instructions on pinterest. They look easy and I've already picked out some cute patterned socks to make baby legs out of.
