Parenting after a Loss

~*~ Toddler Check-in ~*~

So, it's ten minutes before midnight which still totally counts as me posting this when I said I would! We had a mama and dad from our child birthing class over with their little gal, and it was awesome. Baby friends bathing together before bedtime is the cutest thing ever, just sayin'.

Since this is the "first" check-in, how about everyone introduce themselves and their littles? Your history, if you like, where you are in your family planning, some fun stuff about you that doesn't have to be baby related! Looking forward to getting to know some of you better and get reconnected with those of you I've lost touch with :)

Re: ~*~ Toddler Check-in ~*~

  • Hello, all! My name is Jillian. I've been sporadically active on PAL - a lot more when DD was 10 months old and under, as she's been keeping me pretty busy lately. But I was super active on PGAL and my love for loss ladies is boundless.

We experienced an early loss in August of 2011. I never really knew how many weeks along I was, as I had a REALLY lousy OB-GYN and miscarried naturally. After a couple of wonky cycles, we got lucky and DD was born in August 2012. We were team green and she was a surprise, as we'd both felt sure our baby was going to be a boy!

    image

This is my sweet busy gal Elinor. She's got an enormous personality and is very loving. She'll be 16 months old on Wednesday and while we're still waiting for her to walk - she's just stubborn and cautious, both qualities I am sure will serve her well in the future - she's communicating more every day and is a stacking machine. We EBFed the first six months of her life - after a LOT of struggles in the beginning - and she still nurses now in the morning and at night, which I'm super stoked we're still able to do. If the BFing gods are willing, I'd like to nurse until 2, and hope DD weans herself shortly after.

Our lives are about to change in a pretty serious way, as I've been working from home since DD was about three months old and I'm returning to teach English at a community college two days a week starting in January, and I'll be taking another day each week to write (my first book, a fantasy novel, was published in October, and I'm working on the second one), so DD will be spending three days a week in a family child care home. I have a lot of trust in her caregiver and I really like her, but I'm still INCREDIBLY nervous and sure to cry a whole lot, because I'm so used to always having her with me! But I think it's time to let her have some experiences without me, and man, student loans got to get paid.

We're talking about another baby right now (AF returned around 8 months PP despite BFing, because she's a cruel bitch) but every time I think I might be ready, I realize I'm really not. Trying again doesn't scare me and I really enjoyed being pregnant despite all of the PGAL anxiety, I'm just so emotionally INVOLVED with DD that I can't imagine having another baby just yet. I think about another little one and just want to weep that we can't relieve those little moments with her all over again. Even if she does get totally, inexplicably more awesome every day.

  • Yay! Excited for this check-in.

My name is Meghan. My daughter is 1 year old, Harper. I've been with my SO for 9 years and we recently got engaged (last week). We experienced a loss in March 2009. We put our family planning on hold for a while since I decided to go back to school to get a nursing degree. We had a surprise BFP in February 2012 and now are blessed to have the most beautiful gift in the world. We do not plan to start trying for another baby until after I finish my clinicals and pass the boards.

A little about me: I LOVE the holidays, shopping for Harper, baking and cooking, wine, and organizing things. I work as a legal secretary right now but will finish my nursing degree in 2015.
    Aw, congratulations on your engagement!!!

  • Quick summary since i can only post on the phone (Wtf, TB?).

I am Junebug (JB). DS is 26 months.

My DH and I have been married for 4.5 years. He is Navy and is deployed. We seem to alternate m/c with viable pregnancies. First loss was Nov '10(c/p). DS conceived a few months later, delivered Sept '11. Second loss was a mmc, Nov '12. I currently am about 20w with pg #4, due in early May. And no, I am not sure if DH will be home in time.

DS is a sweet kid and he brightens my day...but he has been diagnosed with some speech and developmental delays. An autism dx is a possibility, too...and we may be facing that as soon as next month.

  • I'm Jessica.  I used to be fairly active, but I recently took a new position and didn't have too much time leftover to bump.

My daughter is Lilliana and she will be 20 months on January 9th. My husband is a Marine and we live on the East Coast. Lilliana is amazing, wild, loving, independent, just awesome. We are currently struggling with some sleep regression so that is fun, but other than that we have been very lucky to have such a happy and healthy child.

We were going to stop preventing after the new year, but then we forgot to use a condom this month (right around O of course... and yes I did feel like an irresponsible teenager) so I guess we will see what happens.

by the way.. if anyone wants to let me know where the spell check is on this new formating I would be forever greatful.

  • Hello ladies! I'm not super active on here, but I do check in when I can. I am mostly on PGAL or the May 2014 board these days. I was pretty active on PAL a couple years ago when DS was born but it tapered off.

Anyway, I've been married for a little over 6 years, and I've had 3 losses. One missed miscarriage before DS, then DS - Noah, was born on Valentine's Day in 2011, and then a missed miscarriage and a chemical pregnancy this year, before now being pregnant with my hopeful baby #2 who is due May 2014. All of this history is in my siggy pretty much.

I work full time as an accountant, I just graduated with my master's back in September and I'm one exam away from having my CPA license (taking last exam in Feb). DS is in daycare full time except for holidays and summer b/c DH is a teacher.

DS just went through potty training back in August if anyone is seeking any advice or commiseration :)

Oh, and supposedly this baby is a BOY - my doctor made a guess at just over 15 weeks so I am going to get re-confirmed hopefully at my anatomy scan just to make sure. If it is a boy, we're naming him Lucas. I have to go bi-weekly for cervix checks since I am at risk for shortening/funneling.

I can't think of anything else to add :)

Thinking lots of positive thoughts for you in regards to his possible diagnosis. That must be such an uncertain and scary thing to face.

    Hi everyone!

My DD is Nicole and I can't believe it, but she will be 19 months old tomorrow.  She amazes me every day.  She just recently became obsessed with a teddy bear and asks for her "bah" if she can't find it (or if it's in her crib).  It's adorable.
Her other favorite word of the moment is "more". As in more food, no matter how much is in front of her --- if there is anything left on my plate, clearly she doesn't have it all.  Or if she likes something and it ends, say a song or a book, she says "more"...so then we read the book for the third time.
She fights naps daily but  finally sleeps decently most nights (except for teething).

We live a mile from my parents and they love their 2 days a week with her.
theresat858! And it's so strange for me to remember folks graduating from PGAL and feeling like it was a million years until I had my baby, but now really, they're all so close in age it's not even a thing.

Hi ladies! I was more active over here when DS was first born but I've tapered off.... I have a DD who is 5, a DS (my rainbow) who is almost 19 months, and another DS who is coming via RCS 1.27.14. I had an early loss between DD and DS1. DH recently received a promotion at work that requires him to travel extensively so I'm on my own 4 nights a week. It's been an adjustment but we're all doing well. I'm currently a working mom but might be making the transition to SAHM once this new LO is born. I excited but a little nervous at that prospect; I've seen how my kids have thrived at daycare and I'm afraid I'm going to suck being a SAHM. It's getting late so that's about all I can think of for now :)
@esd, I can't even believe you're about to have another baby! SO EXCITING! Also, I'm sure you'll be an amazing SAHM, if that's the decision you make. I'm pretty sure I'm terrible at it but I'm still so unwilling to give it up.

  • Yay for a toddler check in!

Hi, I'm Holly. DH and I have been married for 6 years. We started TTC in Feb of '10 and I had two early losses in May and Dec of that year. I got pregnant with DD in Oct of '11 and she was born the following June. Lexi is 17 months now!

She is so fun, silly, sweet, and affectionate. I became a SAHM when she was 10m and I've been loving it ever since. Not every day is sunshine, but every day is a great day to be home with her. I've really been trying to socialize her more. Since it's just us at home, she get's really shy around new people sometime. And not that there's anything wrong with being shy, I'm pretty shy myself, but I don't want it to hold her back from making friends and having new experiences. She's also not talking yet. I'm hoping one day she'll just start saying words like it's nothing!

We're still BFing and only a month ago just got down to 2x a day. AF finally returned at the beginning of Dec. I'm very excited to be TTC#2! I'd love to have my kids close in age.

You're right, it could just be a personality trait. I take her to story time every Friday and she hardly ever wants to sit with the other kids or join in with them. She just wants to sit on my lap. :/ I have her signed up for a toddler play group that starts after the holidays, so hopefully that will work out and give her more confidence in social situations.

  • Hi everyone! I'm Bethany and I have 2 boys, 26 months and 7 months. I'm currently post pretty often, but that will probably change in January when I start a new position.

DH & I have been married for 5 1/2 years and we started to TTC in January 2010 but didn't get a BFP until October 2010 and that ended up being ectopic and a lot of headache and heartache. I didn't receive the best medical care, got no follow up visits other than a post-op appointment the day after I went home, and was told I could TTC after 2 weeks even though they gave me the shot. See siggy for the rest (shortened version) of the story. I ended up switching providers and hospitals(even though that hospital was where 1 of my brothers was born, plus all of my cousins and their kids).

My ODS is the love of my life. He is such a happy smiley little guy, who loves to kiss and hug on everyone (including our dogs). He likes trucks and playing with his basketball set. My big worry for him is he has been diagnosed with a mild speech delay and he isn't always able to let me know what he needs, which in turn turns into a tantrum. He is getting better at telling me items of things he wants, but he isn't Mr Conversation. I do have a lot of guilt about his speech issues because I've read that that is common in boys who's mothers were treated with methotrexate in the year before conception. He was also born with a birth defect that I found to be related to the methotrexate exposure as well. There are things about him and YDS that just seem so different developmentally and it breaks my heart.

    TTC January 2010

  • I'm Melissa. I have not been active on this board lately mostly due to the fact I can't get on at work and my cell is pretty much what I use to lurk here. It is a pain to type. I hope I can join now...my Megan will be 1 on Sunday and I pretty much call her a little toddler as she has been walking a while.  Our loss was in 2011 at around 2 months and the TTCAL board pretty much got me through the dark time.

We have a 4 year old DS as well. I work full time while DH is currently looking for work and stays home with DD.  She has given us a few gray hairs already. Two weeks ago she fell and lacerated her forehead on a very small sharp corner. Million in one shot. Five stitches and now using Mederma to get that scar to go away.

Hi everyone!

It sounds like you are on the right track with your older son and he's going to get the help he needs. *hugs*

Poor gal! A friend of mine just had the same experience with her three year old, busted his head on a tile and had to get staples. Hope she's all clear soon!

  • Hi all!

I have not been very active on this board but was on Pgal.... It has been a busy first year+!

DS is 19 months, running around and gibber jabbering like crazy. He was born at 29 weeks...2 lb 14 oz . We spent 56 days in the nicu..and it has been amazing to watch him grow from such a little tiny peanut to a solid 22 lbs today :) he is still little but on the right track in all of his development. We just got tubes today after a solid two months of chronic ear infections. Hoping this does the trick!

I had a chemical pregnancy and then a missed miscarriage at 9 weeks due to Turner's Syndrome before getting pregnant with DH. I had pregnant on the first try each time...it's the staying pregnant that I am not so great at :/

I am 99.9% sure we are one and done... Between age ( I am 37, DH is 40), and a traumatic birth/ long NICU stay i can't imagine going through it all again. Plus, we are feeling pretty complete with our little family. It's been a long road and I think it is time to just be content :)

    Chemical Pregnancy 2001, Married 8/8/09, TTC April 2011, BFP 5/8/11, Missed M/C @ 9wk5d, D&C 6/21/11 BFP 11/13/11 Chase Everett born at 29wks 0 days on 5/7/12 at 2 lbs 14 oz, 14 1/2 inches long.
  • I'm Shanna and Kellen is 2 (27m). I had a loss in college and then another one with DH in May 2010. I had ovulation issues after the loss so it took 2 years total from when we started trying before we were blessed with her. She is funny and beautiful and smart and super sweet.

We were blessed with Raelee in July 2013 and Kellen is a great big sister. We will wait until she is closer to 2yrs old before we try for our hopeful last baby :)

Hey! It's good to see you back around here! That's awesome that your DS is doing so wonderfully now! I still remember when you had him so early. I'm glad he is healthy and happy!! I hope the tubes help with the ear infections. DD doesn't have chronic ones, but she does have one currently and it's not fun.

  • I'm glad I came on to spy! Lol its so nice to see these updates from all of you! :)
I haven't been on as much as I used to be but lurk as much as I can and post when possible. I'm Amanda and I have been married for over 3 yrs. We started TTC in July 2010, had a mmc in august 2011, and had DD in august 2012. She is almost 16 months and so full of energy! She has a strong personality and loves people! She seems to be a lot like my mom since DH and I are both shy and quiet :) DH and I both work full time although I would love to be part time but don't see that happening anytime soon. We are lucky to have family be able to watch DD 3-4 days a week.
We are currently TTC #2 since August. I feel ready most days and really want DD to have a sibling close in age since I'm an only child and DH and his brother are 4 yrs apart and not too close.
It's so nice to 'see' you ladies! :)
Hope everyone has a great holiday!
