July 2012 Moms

Lovely, DH. Just lovely,

I have been asking badgering MH for a Christmas list for over a month now. All he wants is a mini Ipad but we both know we aren't going to be doing something that big this Christmas.  He finally gave me a list of ONE gift last night and it's a PITA. We got a train table for K and already set it up in our upstairs den/playroom. It goes right in the middle of the room where the ottoman used to be and he wants me to make 2 box cushions to place on the train table so it can turn from a toy to an ottoman at a moments notice. It's a great idea and all, but seriously? You want me to buy the materials and make these 2 box cushions, which I have never made before, in the next NINE days on top of all the other crap I have to do? And we are doing Christmas at the lake and leaving the 23rd, so that really gives me SEVEN day. Thanks, DH, thanks.

Ugh. So, should I even try??? LOL

Re: Lovely, DH. Just lovely,

  • omg, that is both a great idea but a total PITA!!! How quick are you with sewing stuff? If you think you could pull it off I would go for it, but if not tell him you'll work on it after the holidays. And when you do make them, please post a pic! :)

  • You can do it! It should be a fairly easy but I understand that the time crunch is not ideal. Can you give him the promise of a cushion for actual Christmas and make them after you get home from the lake? He can't use them there anyways.

  • I know I know. Y'all are right and I should just deal with it after Christmas, but I honestly hate not having everything ready and perfect for Christmas. He would probably be ok with it, but I wouldn't.

I am either going to finish these babies or not do them at all. I am leaning towards finishing them, but I know if I fail I will be irrationally upset with myself. It will be his only gift from me so I want it to be perfect.

  • Well, that's an interesting Christmas gift request.  If it were me, I'd tell him it's a great idea and something I'd like to attempt later, but want to get him a gift.

  • And thanks, I agree it is a great idea! I was shocked he thought of it, actually, which makes me want to do it even more since it will kind of be a gift for me as well. Haha

I've seen your sewing.  You can do it.  If you can do the alphabet so perfectly, you can do this.  The time crunch is a big deal, though.  I'd be freaking out.

Thanks! Those were super easy though.... Haha. I am going to try and brave Hancock's with K in tow today after work....wish me luck. I ordered some fabric online today also (free returns) just in case I don't find something I like at Hancock's considering I rarely do. If I can't find something as nice as what I ordered, I guess that will have to be my excuse and I can just get him something small to open Christmas morning or something. I'm sure the fabric wont get here for at least 5 days, so MAYBE I can pull an all nighter or 2 and get it done in time, but probably not.

  • It shouldnt take you long if you are a sew-er :) I think I would tackle it and I am only mediocre.  Just measure the size, buy some thin pieces of mdf in the size of each square (sounds like it would be 2?), throw some batting over it and to the right thickness and measure and sew your fabric cusions :) Props to your husband for thinking of that, neat idea!

I am only mediocre as well, and very new to cushion related anything, but It is mostly straight lines (and 2 zippers, which is what scares me most). I do want them to look good, though, so I am thinking of doing some piping, which is also something I have never done. I am having trouble deciding what to use as my cushion though.... I hadn't thought of MDF and was thinking just batting (several layers of it) or maybe some foam. Hmmmm.... The MDF would make it impossible to wash, wouldn't it?
