GTKY: What do you splurge on?

I searched first and didn't see this! With all my nurses, techs, and family talking about what they are getting their kids for Christmas I started thinking about expensive things.

What do you splurge on for yourself? I personally buy expensive make-up and hair products. I'll get everything else for cheap but not these things and I hoard make-up. I also can't do a cheap haircut. I've done it and then spent three times as much trying to get it fixed. What about you?

  • My horse stuff. I expect my saddle, boots, helmet, whatever to hold up really well to wear and tear (with a lot of rough use and minimal cleaning) so I don't really mind spending a lot to get it (DH may not me so careless of the cost, though)

  • I'm super cheap...I can't think of anything major that I personally splurge on. We prefer to save up and then splurge on home improvement stuff; we just finished our basement, for example.
    DS1 born 3/27/12 DS2 due 1/8/14
  • Shampoo/conditioner. Not much else. If I had the money again, I'd get my nails done each week. I miss that!

I found a place in town that the lady will do haircuts for $10. She's been doing hair for 20 years. My husband has been going there for several months, and she does a great job. I don't get in enough for hair cuts, I've been going to the beauty school that my cousin helps run. However...I'm taking the plunge and going to Kathy in a week :)

  • I agree with toilet paper. Also, nail polish. Not Chanel splurge, but Essie/OPI.

  • Most makeup and skincare. I make my own skincare sometimes to save, but if I buy it, I like the good stuff.

  • I can't think of anything I really splurge on- I get my books at a second hand store and I usually wait for the sales before I spend anything on myself clothing wise.

  • Also, boots. Not riding boots, but 'cowboy' boots.

  • Facial moisturizer is about the only thing I splurge on. It's the one product that really affects how I look and how well my makeup looks on me, etc. Everything else I am super cheap about.
  • @goldenB Holy crap do I love Mac and Sephora!

If H ever found out my spending habits in those stores, I think he would literally lose his shit...All my baby spending privileges would be completely taken away from me.

  • My current splurge has been stuff for our little girl. I adore shopping for her and can't wait til we can shop together!

@megs12914 & @goldenb I totally splurge on makeup too. Have either of you tried birchbox? You put in your preferences and they send makeup samples each month for like $10ish a month. I find it a fun and inexpensive way to try new stuff I wouldn't normally think of!

Never heard of it before, but thanks for the heads up.
This could get very expensive for my bank account - what if I like ALL the products?!
    :)

  • @Kc101212 I haven't but I will now! I haven't worn make-up in about a month since I've been here and I miss it. I need a good mascara.

@goldenB I can't go to either place with DH because he would flip out. The one time I did he was like, "How did you spend $200 on 5 things?!"

I said, "Umm easy. It could have been worse. A lot worse."

  • I splurge on shoes. "Beautiful shoes will take you to beautiful places."

  • Shoes. I really don't care about the brand, but quality and comfort are essential. I'm not going to wear any shoe that cuts away at my foot no matter how pretty and/or how cheap they are.

And food. I'll spend way more for good organic fruits and meats and find other ways to cut corners.
  • @megs12914, I also splurge on my hair. I keep moving farther away from my salon but I keep going because I love my stylist and the salon in general. If we ever move to the suburbs, I'll probably still go to the same place and just have mommy's day in the city every other month. So worth the money to have well done hair! I also splurge on precut fruit sometimes. It's sometimes worth my time to pay more to cut a step out.
    imageimageimage
  • Make-up, for sure! I'll get cheapo stuff if I'm in a rush and need a certain thing right away, but I usually do a ton of research before buying anything make-up related and get more expensive stuff.

    TP, yes. No chafing here!

    Certain foods.

We think the same! All my heels and shoes are comfortable and if they are not..I return them.

    • I hoard Bare Minerals makeup. So much so I actually had to buy one of those hard boxed make up boxes and now that it's the holidays and I love buying their special edition box sets.
    • I <3 wearing perfume every day so I totally splurge on that at least twice a year and switch it up to match the season. Price means nothing it makes me feel pretty (Thank you Chanel!).
    • I also spend money on MaryKay skin cleansers and facial masks because they really keep my skin clear especially now that my hormones are all over the place.
    • Clothes...when I was in my pre-pregnancy size. I live minutes away from a Banana Republic outlet so I used to go every month.  I miss shopping for me! :-<

  • I splurge on makeup too. Nars blush, Mac concealer, eyeliner and eyeshadow, Bare Minerals foundation. The only thing I cheap out on is Mascara because I don't find the price difference worth the quality.
And I also only buy the good TP, but I stock up when it goes on sale so it doesn't feel like a splurge.

  • Tennis shoes and sports bras. These ladies need good support while bouncing around!

  • I too can't cheap out on hair products and cuts, makeup and skin care. And footwear as well...and bedding. My mom always taught me "you only get what you pay for." My DH has slowly come around to accepting this concept. ;)
  • Sports tickets without a doubt. Next in line is good booze and good food.
Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker Image and video hosting by TinyPic
  • Definitely hair products and make-up. I scowl if I have to spend more than $15 on a shirt but will pay $50 for eye shadow without even thinking about it. I'm a hair product snob. I have horrible natural hair, so it takes good products to beat it into submission.

  • Clothes--beautiful, Anthropologie and JCrew clothes.  Miss them something terrible.

I LOVE THAT MASCARA!! It's amazing. I only use it for special occasions because it's a little more than I want to spend any time soon, but I'm almost out. I may be making that purchase after Christmas! It's truly amazing though!

Same! Makeup, haircut and hair products I go big or go home. This mama likes to feel pretty and that's how I make myself feel good.

  • Makeup! I treat myself to a big Sephora haul a couple of times a year. Ironically I use Suave shampoo and conditioner. I always buy Pottery Barn bedding but I do keep that for 2-3 years. I've found it's pretty timeless so it doesn't go out of style. It also holds up very well. Lastly, travel. Our travel budget is pretty big because we like to do 3-4 trips a year. This one ends with 2013 and 2 kids in full time daycare and I'm a little sad about it.
