Baby measurements = changed due date?

Yesterday was our first OB appt. we ended up at the hospital for a stat ultrasound because they couldn't find a heartbeat. Thankfully the ultrasound was great and we got to see our little baby and it's amazing heart flicker at 159 BPM.
I am technically 9 weeks and 5 days, but the baby measured at 8 weeks and 3 days. Does that change my due date or does that just mean the baby is measuring small?

  • When I was 7w5d I measured 6w5d, but my dr did not change my due date. She said that the measurement was 'plus or minus 5 days.' I'm also curious to hear what others have to say.

  • If you're that far off, I would ask them to use the due date based on ultrasound. You probably ovulated late. That extra week plus will be a big deal at the end if you go late and they start talking about induction.

BFP#2 7/3/13.  U/S at 6w4d showed 1 heartbeat at 127 bmp and 2 empty sacs.  MMC discovered at 10w4d.  D&C 8/27/13.  Pathology showed normal boy.  Missing our babies every day.
    BFP#3 10/29/13!  Beta#1 at 4w5d - 2141, beta#2 at 5w1d - 7651!  U/S 11/21/13 showed baby measuring 2 days ahead with a heartbeat of 127 bmp!
  • Despite measuring a week behind, many doctors will still keep your due date by your LMP the same.  It really depends on the physician.  Also, it's nothing to worry about.  EDDs differ from ultrasound to ultrasound.

My u/s changed my edd by almost 3 weeks so we did change it. With DD, it was only about a week off so we left it the same. My OB said if it had been different by more than a week we would have changed it

It's my understanding that growth is pretty uniform in the first tri. That is, is unusual to be ahead or behind by very much, which is why they do dating u/s now.

  • Mine was changed and my baby only measured 5 days smaller than original due date.
  • Mine measured 3 days bigger so the changed my due date to 3 days earlier. I think your uterus size might be a factor as well.

I have died every day waiting for you. Darling, don't be afraid, I have loved you for a thousand years. And all along I believed I would find you, time has brought your heart to me. I have loved you for a thousand years. I'll love you a thousand more.
  • Mine measured 2 days later than my LMP date. My Dr decided to stick with the original EDD. but with over a week difference, I'd ask the Dr about changing it.

  • I know what day we conceived so technically should be 12 weeks today, but early dating u/s has me at 11w3d today, and because I got preggers right after chemical preg, no AF in between, they are using measurement to determine due date. I'm ok with that :) but it would be cool to be at 12 weeks today.
  • Mine was 6 days behind, so they changed it. Before going on the pill I was always off a few days here or there so I am not surprised that I O'd later than average. I was never super confident about going by my LMP being accurate.
  • My LMP was on August 25th, I never had one in September - I cramped & thought I was gonna start but never did.  But when they did the 1st U/S they said there was no way that the baby was already 10 weeks, it was only the size of a 4 week old.  When I did my second U/S they said I was 6 wks 2 days giving me an EDD of July 9, 2014, but when I went in for my intake appointment they said that my EDD was July 8th.  That's what I go by, but expect the Dr at my next U/S to give me a different EDD, because I'm never regular with my cycle (EVER!) we can not go by LMP, we have to go by size on the U/S.

My plan is not to worry about it, until the Dr is

  • Mine changed after a dating ultrasound but it was difference of three weeks. My understanding is that early on growth is fairly uniform so it is not typically due to baby being bigger or smaller, hence dating ultrasounds. Talk to your ob about it and see what they think. I could see not changing a due date based on a few days difference but when you start getting to a week or more it should be different perhaps.

Mine changed at the ultrasound from 9w4d to 8w... based on the size, and then the follow-up question of whether my periods have always been regular or if they've been not a 28 day cycle.

ETA:  Our little V2 measured "right" for itself though!  :)
  • Based on my LMP my due date was July 14, but after my ultrasound it was changed to July 23

  • I am so glad you posted this because I have been wondering the same thing! I measured at 7w1d but I thought I was 8w according to my LMP. I go for a dating ultrasound on Jan 8th so I'm going to wait to see what they say and then I guess update my ticker accordingly.

I hope I don't have to go back a week though...it's been such a nice feeling marking off the weeks. =)

  • With a week difference, I would think they would change it. Dating u/s are very accurate in determining gestational age. Later ultrasounds are much less reliable.

    1st pregnancy: m/c began 1/12/09 d&c 1/13/09 8wks. Baby stopped growing at about 6wks.

This exactly. I guess it depends on the OB.

    This.
  • My ultrasound yesterday put me at 8 weeks 4 days, by LMP I should have been 10. Doc changed mine.

  • I used fertility treatments and know when I ovulated due to that so know when I conceived which changes my due date by 2 days but the drs don't care even though all 3 ultrasounds have measured right up with my ovulation date.
