3rd Trimester

When does the Dr start checking your cervix at appointments?

Does it depend on your health-care giver? Do they wait until your due date? Until you're in labor?  Or is there a magical time when they start checking?

  • Mine starts at 36 weeks unless there is a reason to check earlier.

  • They started checking me at 36 weeks. And the only reason she did that was because she had to do that step b test thing anyway. Otherwise it would have been 37 weeks.
  • Mine is starting with me at 34/35 weeks. I think it just depends on the doctor/patient.
  • Mine did at 35 weeks but I have a feeling it is cuz I had a few contractions the weekend before.  I don't remember what he did the first time I was pregnant...I think it may have been 36 weeks though.
  • 40 weeks for me, but they checked me at 39 since i was having cramping.
  • I asked this question at my 28 week appointment and the CNP I saw said they don't, until you've reached your due date! I was kind of shocked. I think since my practice allows us to see a wide range of doctors and CNPs, that I'll be begging my doc for an internal by 38 weeks. I heard the docs are more liberal and easier to ask for things, than the CNPs. I just think I should be knowing what's going on with my body...

  • mine said he will start checking at 36 weeks but every OB is different
  • Mine started this past week at 35. I don't know if that is standard for my doc or due to some complications I'm having.
  • Mine gave me the option at 38 weeks--I said yes, it hurt and no progress....at 39 weeks she said she that she time wanted to --not really an option....still no real progress.....ugh--
  • Wow, it looks like it depends on the patient and the Dr.  I'll have to remember to ask at my next visit. Thanks for the replies girls!

  • I think she'll check at 38 weeks, but I can decline if I want.  I'll decide at that time.  Probably I'll give her the go-ahead but experience tells me that (for me) the internal is not necessarily indicitive of anything.  It just tells you where your cervix stands at the time of the appointment.

FWIW, with DS, at my 40 week check, I was dialated 1.5cm, not effaced at all and the baby had not dropped.  Doc didn't think labour was imminent at all.  But, she did admit anything could happen.  Because of GD, she scheduled an induction for 7 days later.

At 40w3d my water broke and after a short labour (<9 hours) DS was born.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • I've been checked a few times because of contractions, but typically it wouldn't be until later. It depends on your doctor too.
  • I have mine today. Oh the fun!
  • I had my first at my 36 week apt.  They asked me if i wanted one last week and i declined since it could be 1cm dialated for weeks and they agreed.  I know i have to have one this week..
  • 38 weeks at my place

  • Depending on you OB 36-37 weeks.  You get a strep B test doing this time also.
