March 2014 Moms

Today is a bottle (or 2) of wine kinda day

Or a bag of chocolate followed by a pint of ice cream. Today has been nothing but stressful. DD running away from me into the road, no cars were coming thank goodness. I was fuming after that. Then, we waited 20 minutes for our lunch- just to get home and have it wrong. Yes, it was fast food and I was almost in tears over it. We were at my parents taking care of their dog because they are out of town and dd decided to feed him her food instead of eat. She also proceeded to pee and poop in her underwear. Not sure why she didn't tell me, she always has. All I heard was pee, so when I took her underwear off thinking it was just pee, this nice ball of poop rolled on the floor. I cleaned her up, the floor up, took care of the dog and headed home for quiet time. There was more, but I won't get into it. Tonight, I get a call from my mom saying my grandma had a stroke and is in the hospital. We live in the same town, so she's close by and my aunt and uncle are with her. But when I say hospital, everyone I know who has ever gone in there was misdiagnosed. For example, they sent my grandpa home with lock jaw, although they diagnosed him with a cold. He had tetanus. Most recently a family friend went there and laid there for a couple days getting worse. The hospital slowly ran tests. We finally convinced her family to switch hospitals and they knew the same day that she had mad cow disease. I went there for the methotrexate shot last year for my ectopic and laid in the bed for 12 hours before finally getting a 2 minute shot. I would be all for a vbac, but I have to go to that hospital to do it and I refuse too. Anyway, they're admitting her and her one side is still numb/ tingling. It just brings back many memories from my first pregnancy. The whole time my grandpa was dieing. He did die and they brought him back, but he couldn't live without machines. He passed away 2 months before dd was born and he wanted to meet her so bad. She was born a day after his birthday. The most relaxing part of the day was the glucose test this morning lol. Sorry for the vent, but I had to get it out there.

I don't know much about strokes. Now that it was caught and she's at the hospital, can she still die from it? If anyone knows, if not no big deal. Just popped into my head. I know her mom had a stroke and lived a very long, long life with it.

  • So sorry that all this is happening.

Early intervention makes a ton of difference with strokes, but depending on the location of the clot or bleed it can make a huge change in the outcome. She could do very well and continue on for years, but my DH's great-grandfather (98 years old) did pass away in hospital a couple weeks after his stroke. They should be able to give your family an idea of the long-term outcomes for your grandma Hopefully all is well, it was a milder stroke, and she is getting the right care.

  • My grandpa had been diagnosed with the human form of mad cow disease as well. It's extremely rare and difficult to pin point bc of that. He had to be sent to the mayo clinic bc the hospital did all the tests that they could and still couldn't find it
  • What a crappy day. I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother, I hope she is ok.
Are you having your ceaser at that hospital or another one?
  • What a crappy day!! My grandfather died from a stroke he had a massive blood clot in his brain that wouldn't stop bleeding. ( they tried everything). He for to say good bye to everyone the night before my sister an I had to fly home ( he lived in Florida an we live in MASS) he said he loved us an he missed us. Turns out the next day he had moved on he was on ventilators for a week an then he passed. My grandfather also should have went to the hospital the night before he was having mini strokes. Hopefully they caught t early enough that she will recover fine!
  • Meandthey -- your grandfather sounds like had a hemmoragic stroke-- different than a cerebral vascular stroke, at our hospital it is routine to intubate the patient and place them on a ventilator. I am so sorry for your loss of your grandfather. @jazzyexpo I don't know what kind of stroke your grandparent is having. I am glad you mentioned the three hour window because that is the key in stroke management. It is imperative that we see a stroke like symptoms patient in the three hour window so we can determine if they meet the requirement for a specific drug that breaks up clots. Every case is different and you have to be screened into use that drug. The emergency room dr and neurologist decide if the patient meets the criteria for the medicine. If they do not they typically place the patient on a blood thinner and manage their blood pressure also. There are so many great recovery stories and some effects yes are permanent and life threatening. That is why it is so important for that three hour window. There are so many rehabs for stroke patients, some can be cared for at home and some need to be managed at a short term rehab facility. I hope that your grandma recovers quickly.
I hope that your glucose test results come back good! I will have a pretend glass of wine with you!

feel free to message me if you have any questions on the stroke issues :)

I will have the csection at the other hospital. It's another 10 minutes up the road. I will say, they have been doing everything great for her so far and we are happy with the care this time around.

Thank you for the info! There's no hemorrhaging in the brain. She is on the medicine to dissolve the clot. Also she has no drooping face, slurred speech and she can lift her left arm and feel it. She's being taken care of in the icu. Thank you for the input!
