Two Yolk Sacs? (Pics Included)

I had my first ultrasound on Thursday. My doctor told me that I was earlier than we thought (5+3 weeks). She then noted that she saw one definite yolk sac and a possible second! She said it's so early and she's not 100% sure, so she scheduled me for another ultrasound Dec 26th. I asked if it was possible to be a fetal pole and she told me that it does not have the characteristics of one. I think I see two yolk sacs now that I have zoomed in on the pic a bit but what do you ladies think?

This is the unedited ultrasound photo.

This is the edited pic. The two yellow dots are where I think I see two yolk sacs.

  • I'm sorry it doesn't look like any of the twin ultrasounds I've seen. I would wait a little longer & see what comes up at your next appointment. Good luck!

  • How exciting would twins be?  Please update when you have your next ultrasound and the picture is more clear. :)

Yes, my doctor did explain they would be identical twins because they would share the same gestational sac, but she's wants to be positively sure before she confirms a multiple pregnancy. Thanks for responding ladies! The 26th can't come soon enough! I'm excited!

I don't know enough about this to say for sure but is it possible that one of those dots could be the yolk sac and the other a fetal pole forming?

One looks more elongated than the other, that's why I don't necessarily think they're both sacs.

  • The picture posted doesn't look like twins to me, though I'm guessing that your OB might be taking other better angles into consideration? Either way, congrats on your pregnancy.

FWIW, I attached one of my 6wk u/s (I have mo-di boys) pictures for comparison. It's only a few days further along than yours, but the two yolk sacs and fetal poles are pretty easy to spot.
