Hi all, I haven't posted much lately with being so busy at work and getting ready for Christmas, but am feeling really upset after talking to my Dr. She phoned and left messages to call her back and I had to do so at work today. She said that my down syndrome results were 1:200 and if I wanted to do further testing to let her know.
I discussed it with my boyfriend and decided to have an amnio done because the uncertainty and not knowing would kill me and stress me out for the rest of my pregnancy. It is scheduled for Monday at 9:00 am and any spare prayers that everything looks ok would be much appreciated. It would just be so nice if something about pregnancy would be easy, but PGAL is definitely not.

Is the blood test (maternit21 or comparable) an option for you? That wasn't available when I was pg with ds, but is now. Just a thought as there are risks associated with the amnio
Eta: One thing that really helped me keep my sanity until we got the amnio results was to think about the chances that he DIDN'T have it. My ds had a 90% of not having it (he doesn't). Your child has a 99.5% chance of not having it.

The testing is not covered in Canada and I would have to pay over $800- that I don't have right now with Christmas and hours at work go down after others have finished all of their holidays-to still only get some more percentages. The amnio is covered and will tell me yes or no. I am very scared of the risks of miscarriage, but feel the constant worry after adding in my age of nearly 41 years old would not be worth it. I kind of just feel stuck, however, I am trying to think positive about the odds- it was just unexpected when the Dr told me this as they kept saying that everything looked great up until now.

Believe me, I understand that 'jaw on the floor' feeling when they tell you that your odds are worse than expected. At almost 41 though, yours actually aren't that far off the age average...they are better, in fact. I just did this same screening and they said my age alone (37) put me at a 1:167 risk for T21.
That baby has looked great up until now is a really good sign. When they did my sons amnio they did a thourough ultrasound first and didn't find a single marker. They said that halved the odds of him having it (sad that 1:20 odds sounded good).
I understand the insurance not covering the blood test quandry. It's why I did this screening vs the DNA blood tests as well. I really wish they would just cover it for us AMA mommas. We have a known increased risk. Why not just give us a straight up answer as early as possible, you know?

Ask for the rush results (FSH OR FISH...I can't recall bc they weren't available for me). Most places can do those. Official results take about 10 days.
