Cloth Diapering

FTM, Diaper Change with Pocket Diapers. First time poster for this board.

Hi ladies,

I am a newbie to this board and interested in cloth diapering my little guy due in April. The posts at the beginning of this board were very helpful! I am trying to sort through all the information I have read and figure out exactly what we need. At this time I think I would like to use Charlie Banana one size pocket diapers. I did order a few blueberry mini diapers for newborns and 1 little bee changed diaper for newborns. With the newborn diapers, they are all in ones so I know I will have to change the whole diaper each time my son pees or poops. I was just wondering how this works for pocket diapers, do you switch out the insert only if they diaper is wet, then switch out the whole diaper when they poop, or do you change the whole diaper each time?

I am sure this is a stupid question, that should be common sense. I was just trying to sort out exactly how many one size diapers to work on purchasing and how many newborn all in ones.

Thank you for any responses!

  • Pocket diapers are the same as AIO's only the absorbent part is removable for better cleaning, drying, and to adjust the absorbency.

  • This gets asked from time to time, so you're not the only one who gets confused about pockets.

You change the whole diaper each time. Most pockets you should take the insert out before putting both the insert and shell into the diaper bin. Some pockets, like Thirsties, are designed to agitate out in the wash.

As to how many diapers, 36 changes is a good number for newborn, and usually 24-30 for OS. I'm in the camp of it's good to have several different kinds of diapers in your stash, especially at the NB stage because sometimes AIOs and pockets don't fit right away even if they are NB sized. It's a good idea to have a few prefolds, fitteds and covers handy just in case.
  • Thank you very much! I am glad to have that detailed sorted out!
