Stripping the Membrane

At my apt today my ob said that if the twins have not arrived by 37 weeks he would strip my membrane. I'm currently 35.3 weeks (the ticker is wrong due to dd change). I was wondering what peoples experience with membrane stripping was. Anything is helpful.

Re: Stripping the Membrane

  • I had it done with DD at 39w1d, my water didn't break till 40w0d. It works for some people, didn't work for me. It wasn't that painful, a bit uncomfortable and some bleeding, that's it.

  • Worked for me with baby #5!! Went I to labor 2 hrs after it was done. But I was already 5cm.
  • I had mine stripped with my daughter. It was very uncomfortable, but it's not a big deal. I contracted all day, took a nap & no more contractions. Water broke at 11:115pm that night. My midwife said that it was my body that was ready if I had stopped contracting. It's definitely worth a shot!

  • I had it done at my 40W appt with DD. I was not dilated. i had contractions all day (nothing too painful) and my water broke at 9 that night. She was born 24 hours after my water broke - though I never went into full blown labor until about 12 hours after that when they gave me some induction meds. It was uncomfortable and there was a little blood that I noticed when my water broke.

  • With DD I had it done at 38 weeks. Had false labour several days later. Had it done again at 39 weeks and went into labour that night, but she was already engaged and I think I was a bit dilated. It probably just helped get things going. Babies won't come either way if they're not ready!

  • I had mine stripped 3 times with DS1.  It didn't do anything except cause some bleeding and cramping.  I had it done once with my twins, but it didn't work at all.

  • Keep in mind, this is going to depend on whether or not your babies and body are ready. Mine, like I said, was successful BUT I was 5cm and effacing, and it was the longest of ever gone in a pgcy (38 w). It was more of a jump start to see if I could avoid pitocin (which I did have) during labor. If you are dilated even a 1 or 2 sometimes it won't work. Alllll depends. But, it IS effective when done at the correct time.
  • Thanks. I'm already 3+ cm and 70% effaced.
I needed pitocin with DD (my water broke and no contractions followed) my mom was the same way.

  • Pitocin is terrible when going all natural. I did that twice and it wasn't cool. Hope u can avoid!
