Normal Low Fluid levels

Anyone else have this around 23 weeks?

My doctor told me I need to drink at least 3 large bottles of water a day and rest. He said was concerned but said my levels were on the low end of normal so I'm still considered in the normal range.

I know this is probably nothing much to worry about the the water will straighten my levels right out, but wondering if anyone has had this before? If everything turned out OK?

They saw it during the ultrasound today (I wasn't expecting to get one, but they wanted to make sure my cervix was still OK) . I am kicking myself for not getting the level number. I believe 9 or 10 is the lowest you can go in the normal zone. I am going to call tomorrow to get the exact number bc it is bugging the hell out of me that I don't know it.

  • They measure your amniotic fluid on the ultrasound in centimeters I believe. I got down to 5cm with DS at 35 weeks and was sent to the hospital for IV fluids. I was checked the next day and was up to 8. Had another check 3 days later and was back down to 5 and the cord was wrapped around baby's neck twice so I had a c-section 2 hours later. It is VERY important to drink water. The more amniotic fluid you have the easier the baby can "float around". I think my issue was moving from VA to CO during my pregnancy and the change in elevation - now living at 6,800ft - which just caused me to require more water intake. So drink, drink, drink!!
  • Thanks for the response!

I am chugging water like its my job now! 3 L is almost twice as much as I was drinking before!

  • When I went in to the elective ultrasound at 15w she told me I was on the low end of normal and to increase my water intake. So I've been drinking lots of water for 5 weeks. I went in this week for my a/s and they said I'm still on the low end. I only drink water- no sodas, tea, or coffee so I guess I'll just keep trying.
  • Wow, well I hope for your next appt it increases. I guess we're lucky we're still in the normal range!

  • This time I'm not sure if my levels are normal (my scan is Tuesday), but during my last pregnancy (which was also my first), my fluid levels were routinely low. It can be really bad for the baby if you don't keep them in normal levels, but the good news is that drinking extra/enough water and resting some during the day can totally fix it. Did the dr daily if the baby's kidneys and liver were functioning properly? The fluid is produced from not only you and your water intake, but also the baby's kidneys and recycling the amniotic fluid by 'breathing' it in/drinking it and peeing it out (gross, I know). So if the baby's body is functioning properly, you're probably five by just adding to your water intake. The farther along the pregnancy goes, the more it depends on your own water intake. Also, the upside for me last time was that I was able to see her a lot. They wanted to monitor it, so we got to do ultrasounds often, especially if I felt decreased movement.
  • Luckily they said everything else looked fine it was just my levels they were concerned about.

I'll just have to drink what they say to drink and hope it increases my levels to a number they are more comfortable with.

  • Ive had low fluid in every ultrasound since 16 weeks. I don't understand why because I drink TONS of water. The ultrasound tech always freaks me out but the radiologist is never really concerned because even though it's low its still considered normal. They also told me to stay away from caffeine and to stick to just plain water and power aid/gatorade every once in a while if I need a change. Good luck mama!

  • This made me go drink some water.

  • Chug chug chug!!!

Whats also crazy is my doc said besides the hustle and bustle of providing for my family I need to rest.

I work from home- so it's pretty much like I am on bed rest as I don't run around all day. I'm not sure how much more rest I can get! Maybe I need to mentally rest. I have worked myself up a good bit recently (this has been a tough year, following a tough year, last year) and I wonder if the stress I am putting on myself mentally contributed? if that makes sense?

I'm not a doctor, but I think mental rest is as important as physical rest.  When we don't give our brains a chance to slow down and chill, I think we get as tired as we would from lack of physical rest.

    Totally agree^^
  • Glad I don't sound crazy. I'm going to keep chugging water and try my hardest to turn off the noise in my head!
