Pregnant after IF

Flying...

So I have read and talked with my IVF nurse that flying is ok and I need to make sure I get up and walk every 1/2 an hr on the flight but I was just curious how many of you have flown in early pregnancy and the experience you had with it?  I was never worried before when I hypothetically talked about doing it but now that I really am I'm slightly nervous.  I will be 5w5d when we level for Europe and it's obviously a pretty long flight. Any tips (especially if I'm not feeling too hot by then)? Also how did you handle carrying on your injectable meds...did you need a drs note? Thanks ladies!

Re: Flying...

  • I have flown several times for work since my BFP. I agree with getting zofran. I don't get motion sickness but boy am I glad I had it. My first trip was before MS kicked in but on the flight home I started to get nauseous. Thank goodness for to zofran or I don't think I would have made it.

  • Thanks ladies. No ms has kicked in yet but I definitely should make sure I get this for one the way back if it hasn't kicked in yet.

Did you have to do anything special for your injectable meds for carry on?

  • When I was flying with Lupron my IVF nurse told me I might need a note- not for the meds but for the needles and syringes. Sure enough, I got stopped by security so they could inspect my freezer bag. They didn't require the note but I was relieved knowing I had it. On the other hand, I'm flying tomorrow and asked my OB if I needed a note for my Lovenox and she said she has never had an issue with Lovenox.
I may have more tips after tomorrow night but I'm going to be wearing my compression stockings and making sure I stand up and stretch as often as I can. I'll also make sure I'm walking during our layover.

  • I flew the weekend I got my positive HPT and was still doing PIO. I had a note from my RE that was pretty generic and said I have injectable medications but it was totally fine. I had them all packed in my carry on in case they needed to be inspected separately and told the security people. It was totally fine! MS had not yet hit for me but I agree with PPs about being prepared. I would bring the seasick bracelets- I think they helped my MS. Also maybe pack yourself some bland snacks (crackers, dry cereal, ect).

  • I agree with the Zofran, staying hydrated, the SeaBands, and bringing snacks.  You may also want to get some Preggie Pop drops.  They are pretty much like hard candies, but I used them all the time when I was dealing with morning sickness and they helped.  If you feel nauseous, try not to let yourself get hungry - that makes it worse.  So the bland snacks will definitely help!
And have a fantastic trip!  If you do start m/s while you're there, I definitely recommend carrying around a little m/s "emergency kit."  Mine had my Zofran, Preggie Pops, mixed nuts, crackers, life savers, and a couple alcohol swabs (smelling one sometimes helped if I felt like I was going to vomit.)

  • I would agree on the Preggie Pops/Drops. Those were a life-saver when my ms kicked in. And I;ll ditto pp about the English breakfast! Take some snacks that you like.

When I first flew I panicked about going through the body scanner when I saw it at the airport. I know a million pregnant women go through, but if you don't want to, you can ask for a female pat down. I've done it several times.

    Have a safe future flight!
