2nd Trimester

14 week U/S and it's a boy! Maybe?? Please share your experience...

Hello fellow Mommies and Mommies-to-be, I am a first time Mommy and my due date is late March 2014.  I am scheduled for my second trimester screening late October, but as a new excited Mom, I could not wait that long!  I received an email from a baby store that performs 2d and 3d/4d ultrasounds, so I scheduled it as soon as I was 14 weeks (this last Saturday).  When we first found out we were pregnant, the DH and I have had intuition that we were having a girl (Chinese gender predictor said so too, not that we were depending on it), however, his family other than his Momma were rooting for a boy to carry the family name, very annoying as he is not the Royal Family.  Before my appointment Saturday, I had a dream that the baby store had an outdated machine and the tech said it was a boy although the U/S was unclear, then the whole family, other than my MIL, were cheering that it was a boy and I was saying "no it's not a boy, I am not convinced."  And woke up very confused.  Fast forward to my appointment Saturday, it was much less dramatic than my dream.  Unbeknownst to be, the machine was outdated of course (just like my dream!) and the handle that the tech uses over your belly was having some issues and translated very fuzzy to the screen.  My baby was in a weird position and it took the tech over 20 minutes to get anything.  When she finally got a side shot, she saw a tiny bump (the same size as the baby's nose) and quickly said it was a boy. She tried moving it to get the butt shot that shows the penis and balls clearly, but could not get it.  She moved it to the side again and the bump appeared a little bigger (however not much bigger) and said 100% boy.  She tried the 3d shot as well to confirm it for me, but again it was unclear bc of the handle.  Anyway, we told his family and they were cheering as well, but over the phone thankfully.  My Mom was present during the ultrasound and said she wasn't convinced as I was supposed to be a boy all the way to the end(back in 84' of course) and I turned out to be a girl.  She also saw a tiny bump back then, so I guess there are cases of girls having a tiny bump.  Anyway, not painting anything or buying any furniture until week 20.

Please share your experiences with me as I am curious to know.  I was prepared for a girl this whole time, had a name picked out, room planned, but now I am warming up to a boy although I don't feel like it's a boy.  Would love to hear from everyone.  Love and light to all :)

  • Well at 14w both male & female genitalia are still protruding from the body. So there is one reason I wouldn't waste my time or money on one. Secondly, the outdated machine. Third, who knows what kind of training this person has.

So at this point, I wouldn't tell anyone, wouldn't buy clothes, paint a room or pick out names. Just wait for you a/s and hope that once they are all done with the important measurements that they are there for, that they may have a minute to scam over the genitals to tell you if it's a boy or a girl.

  • @HFrizzie thanks!! Congrats on your baby boy :)
  • At 14 weeks I don't think I'd trust that it's a boy. It's still so early. I would definitely wait until your anatomy scan. Even in just a few weeks the genitalia will be more pronounced.
Also, just because you're prepared for a girl, think it's a girl, have only girl names picked out, etc, doesn't mean that it's a girl. I never thought I'd have a boy. I literally grew up thinking I'd be a mother to daughters. Well, I have a little boy. So try not to get your hopes up because it's a 50/50 chance.

  • I would be cautious, especially if it was the same size as the baby's cute little nose! You're still pretty early to find out gender and its possible its a girl, especially at 14 weeks. Apparently girls and boys can easily get mixed up early on. I went in yesterday for my elective ultrasound at 18 weeks to find out gender and our sweet little boy was definitely showing us that he was in fact a he! It's much more obvious than the size of his nose, so I would still hold out hope for your little girl :-) mothers intuition can be very strong, everyone in my family was saying "it's definitely a girl!" But somehow, I just couldn't picture it. If you want to find out with more confidence, wait until your 20 week scan, or you can be insanely impatient like me! If you choose to go to a different place, review them online and it was only $80 for our session... It was extremely clear and she did a great job, she was very gentle. So, again.. Don't give up on your baby girl, it's still so early to determine gender.

  • I didn't know places EVEN did it at 14 weeks. The earliest I have found is 18 weeks. I would wait on buying anything.

  • @KariB509 @beccam1230 thanks!  I'm happy with whatever the outcome.  I've always wanted the perfect pair since I grew up with a brother, so I will be excited for a little boy.  I guess I was rooting for a girl based on the fact that I'm an older sister myself.  Also, my competitive nature got the best of me so I went for the underdog ("the girl") since no one was rooting for her. lol.  Just having fun with it.  Anyhow, I know intuition isn't always right, so that's why I am waiting for a real confirmation until I start painting and decorating.  As for having my names picked out, it's just natural for a new mom to start thinking of names before you find out it's gender.  Daddy wants a junior so it wasn't that hard to come up with a name for boy ;)

@lesleygosooners I scheduled mine through Peek A Boo Imaging, which is located at authorized places like baby stores, etc.  I would call before to confirm what kind of machine they have and how new/outdated it is.  Not all locations have old machines, so it's worth a try.  Although if you're already 17 weeks, I am sure your doc appt is coming up very soon.

Good luck on all your pregnancies!
  • This is the risk of early u/s. It's very hard to tell which is generally why they wait a little longer to check.

I will say, at about 15 weeks I went in for a routine u/s and she took a peek and we saw a very clear penis on DS2. It was confirmed at the official anatomy scan several weeks later. Here is what we saw at 15 weeks.

I wouldn't paint anything yet, but I will say I would trust a guess of boy at 14 weeks over a girl guess.

  • @rowanthefrog WOW that's a clear boy! haha. Congrats on your little one and thanks for the input :)

@Laurendag you're so right, paragraphs are my friend.  This pregnancy has given me mush for a brain.  I can't spell, type, speak at times.  It's quite embarrassing.  My hubby and friends love it though lol.  Anyway, it's cases like you as to why I am going to wait till my 20 weeks for a final confirmation.  It could be anything at this point, you never know!  Thanks ;)
  • I had the ultrasound paranoia as well...this is my first pregnancy and I didn't have my first ultrasound until I was 19w and the tech was 90% sure it was a girl. This was disheartening for my DH because he wanted a boy so bad. I knew (mothers intuition?) that it was probably a girl...

When we moved from Denver to San Diego and switched doctors my new doctor looked at my ultrasound picture I brought to the first consult, he initially said "oh, a boy!" Like there was no question...when I corrected him he suggested we go take another look. (Major paranoia onset as I had told the whole family and already bought girl stuff). Of course the baby was crossed legged and balled up so we couldn't get a clear image of her...

25 week ultrasound confirmed it was a girl (phew)...so my advice would be to avoid the anxiety, wait until your second ultrasound or prep with gender neutral things--if you can't help from buying that super cute onesie or PJ set, which is what I did.

But trust your gut too, really hone in on that motherly intuition...it's like a super power!!
  • Hello Ladies, It's been a while since I have been on, been going through some personal family matters that we had to deal with.  Anyhow, I had my 20 week ultrasound at the end of October and doc confirmed it is a girl.  I guess Mother's intuition is no joke.  I will be welcoming my baby girl in March 2014.  Micaela Nicolette :) can't wait!!
  • It's too early to tell at 14 weeks, the tech might as well as flipped a coin, or just made a 'guess'.  :-?  IMO

Oh Nmd, I see you found out it was, in fact a girl. So weird your dream & intuition looks to be 'spot on!' lol

  • I was told mine was a boy at 14 weeks and she was correct. I'm now 25 weeks and definitely a boy.
  • At 14 weeks, my obstetitrician was 90% certain that the twins were a boy and a girl.  I am scheduled for a more in depth u/s on Jan 6th, so we will hopefully know more then.  I had a feeling it was one of each :)

  • I would just wait. 14 weeks is too early to be placing any bets on the sex at this juncture. Really, I know its exciting, but all the web posts won't change the answer that you just have to have patience.

  • Congratulations on your little girl! My U/S tech said boy at 13w. I was pretty skeptical. She's been doing her thing for years, but I figured that was still very early, unless my baby has a big package!

My A/S is on Monday and I'm so excited. Despite what the tech said last month, I have been thinking girl all along, and so is everyone else. We'll see how good my mother's intuition is! Congrats again. :)

  • The guess from my NT scan (baby measuring at 12w5d) was strongly boy and it was correct. However, it was based on "angle of the dangle" at that point, so I would not have painted the nursery with that information by any means. Wait until your anatomy scan.

First of all, I wouldn't get unnecessary medical procedures (that is what an U/S is).  Second, I agree with PPs--doesn't sound like it was reliable at all.  I had an amnio with DS at 15 wks (for which they do an U/S beforehand) and it was VERY clear it was a boy--the tech and I actually said it at the same time….and yes, it was bigger than a nose lol

  • I have an unpopular opinion on this matter, but I do believe in a 14 week scan's ability to determine gender. My first daughter was determined this way, and my current pregnancy is a girl based on an NT scan at 14 weeks. The perinatologist who performed it told me if someone knows what to look for the results are pretty conclusive. You will hear many people tell you they know so and so who had a wrong "guess", but I think there are a lot of correct ones you aren't hearing about.

Now, with both of my pregnancies, I had my own doubts until the anatomy scan, but I feel confident this one will be correct also (scan is on Friday). I was convinced I was having a boy this time, so when I heard "girl", I instantly doubted. I feel it was wishful thinking on my part. I have now completely come to terms with my 2 daughters!

I am sure you will be happy

  • At 14 weeks I was told boy as well and had my a/s last week and he is for sure a boy. I think it is easier to tell it is a boy earlier than a girl.

Congratulations on your little girl, pretty name. I do hope you went back to that u/s place and demanded a refund. It's such a scam for them to be claiming to know the gender that early.
