Moby wrap tips

I didn't want to thread jack, so..

@V&G101808 or any other Moby users.. how do you put the Moby on? I thought I had it down, but the last few times it loosened up shortly after I put it on, or was too tight the next time.. I feel like an idiot, but getting it on has discouraged me from using it :-(

Any advice/tips are welcome!

Re: Moby wrap tips

  • Since the Moby can be so stretchy I can understand why it's hard to find a happy medium...

I do the "regular" wrap - I still wear LO facing my chest.  When I first place the wrap on my belly (with the tag facing forward, wrap folded long wise) and I wrap it up around my shoulders I make sure to do this part pretty tight.  When I bring the wrap over my shoulders and back down into the belly panel - I tighten them again.  I pull the shoulder straps forward so that they are pretty tight against my back.

I've found this the best way to keep him at my chest level without sagging.  And I'm sure to always tie the end portion on pretty tight so it keeps his butt up and provides good support.

    Hope that makes sense!

  • I'll add that the bigger he gets the less I want to use the Moby because of the stretch.  I have a homemade wrap made of cotton gauze that is less stretchy that I'll probably be using more - wrapping it the same way though.

  • How many times have you used it? You may find that you have to use it a few times and often to figure out that sweet spot.

I only ever used the newborn hug hold and have quit using it. After using wovens for so long with DD1 I find it to just get too loose too easily.

  • I had the same issue. When she was smaller I had no issues getting it the right tightness, now I just can't get it right. My solution? I bought a k'tan. Problem solved! I was getting mad at tying it all the time anyways. I know, super helpful, right?

  • I still use the Moby. I have washed it a few times so maybe that helps keep the tightness bc I haven't had any problems with it being too loose. I do him facing in when in public, facing out when at home. In a few months I'll prob switch to wearing him on my hip.
  • @belhurtbride I've probably used it about 5-7 times.. most likely not enough to get it "broken in".. maybe some more practice would be a good idea!

@V&G101808 thanks for the help! I think my issue is when I tighten around the shoulders, it rides up in front of my stomach - does that make sense? I can't get it to stay there and get tight where I need it? And then my follow up is... how do you get LO in there the easiest? bc my LO has been getting irritated with me when I try and put him in there.... mostly bc I'm not really efficient at probably...  Maybe woven would be best for me .... I need to do some research on the k'tan and mei' tai .. maybe one of those would work better for us.

@hauntedradio i also have a very short torso... I'm googling mei tai as we speak... for reference, what's a good price on those? i might try and find a used one..

  • I loves the Moby when he was small enough for the newborn hold but I find now that he's much bigger I like our mei tai a lot better. I feel like it's easier to adjust and get him in and out of than the Moby. I have a short torso and I feel like with the Moby in order for it to be right enough to not sag he was up too high for me to be comfortable.

This is me exactly! I like the Mei tai more but she still sags. I can't get it to work out :(
When I mentioned chest like a watermelon in OU, I meant it literally....I'm a freakin GG now. So if I wrap her low my back hurts but if I get her up on my chest she sticks out further than my 9 month belly did.

I totally understand what you mean by the belly part riding up.  It happens to me, I try to pull it back down a little but ultimately it doesn't have to be very low.  Once you get the baby in you can adjust it as needed to cover his/her back and bottom.

I perch baby over my shoulder and slide him into the panel that's underneath (the bottom part of the X across my chest).  Slide him in, pull the straps so they cover his bottom and up his shoulder.  Then put him into the 2nd strap.  Then the tummy panel comes up and then I tuck his feet under the tie.

It isn't very quick which is why I asked for a ring sling for Christmas ;)
I've read on multiple sites that once the babies got bigger the Moby just wasn't as great as a carrier as it was when they were smaller.

  • Thanks @v&g101808 and @hauntedradio for the tips! I think I have to just practice a bit more.. and maybe check out the Mei Tei... it sounds like the Moby is either a hate it or love it thing and I want to love it.. but I may need to learn to love it lol.

  • I use the Moby but never for more than about 30-40 minutes - that's all he'll tolerate in it.  I like it.  It gives my hands a rest and I've never had trouble with it getting too loose.  I also wash it frequently because DS spits up a lot.  Maybe the dryer helps it retain its shape?
