How many tries?

How many attempts does it take to get your LO down at night? It used to take me just one shot, but I'm about 7 nights into weaning from the swaddle and it takes a few tries. She's 12.5 weeks right now. She typically goes right back down in the middle of the night.

Re: How many tries?

  • We usually just have to try once but that one try has been taking forever. This week it went from 15-20 to about an hour. LO is 11.5 weeks. We put him down when he's asleep. We are working up to putting him down awake and letting him self soothe.

  • I'm going to try putting down drowsy once my DD masters sleep without her swaddle! I think I'm going to wait until 4 months.
  • I'm lucky if I get 1 nap in the crib a day...and when I do it's a super short cat nap and she's really cranky!
  • Takes me 4 hours of trying.. If not more. I'm persistent with keeping her in her crib but all she wants to do is cuddle and rock all night.
  • Wow! 4 hours? Has it always taken that long?
  • It depends on the night. Some times only once other nights (like tonight) 3 times. It's those 3 time nights where I am very aware of all the little noises that might possibly wake her up.
  • Sometimes once and sometimes 3+ times. DD is not a fan of being put down when drowsy except for the first nap in the morning. All other times she needs to be nursed to deep sleep then carefully placed into crib. Or bounced for naps.

  • Once, rarely twice.  We tried to wean out the swaddle and it was terrible.  She just wasn't ready and loves to be swaddled, so I just bought some bigger ones and let her sleep!

  • It used to be much easier, than again I was co sleeping before ever since I've been super persistent with her crib it's basically a shift of work just to get her down, 4 hours every night!
  • Pretty much always just once at night. But I don't plan on weaning the swaddling any time soon. I don't see a benefit to it. Naps are totally different. I'm lucky if I can get her to nap anywhere other than my arms.

  • Right away in the middle of the night, but naps in the day are trickier.  They typically take about 2 to 3 tries.
  • Generally just one try - he's pretty ready to go to bed once we start his last feeding.

This is the same for us pretty much. After her last feeding around 8 she will fall asleep on me or DH and then we put her in the rnp.

@littlejellybean Do you swaddle during naps? I found that I have to swaddle at naptime too. DD just loves the swaddle too much to sleep without it right now. If I don't swaddle her, she won't sleep anywhere but in my arms.

I do not swaddle for naps. Never have, really. It is one of the things I did/do to differentiate daytime and nighttime sleeping. And I may talk a big game about how much I wish she would nap somewhere other than on me, but truth be told it's my favorite part of the day. She's so squishy and cuddly. :)

  • Usually one try, as long as we didn't let her get over tired. She set a strict 8 pm bed time for herself and if we haven't started getting her last feeding by 7:30, it makes it more difficult.

This!! I'm dreading stopping the swaddle. I recall with my first the doctor told as at the 4month appt that he wanted us to stop it, so I'm waiting until then since our first attempt was miserable

  • One for each. they have a nighttime routine already. feeding, diaper change, top off the stomach, Daddy swaddle and put to bed. Sometimes they'll spit out the binky and get upset... but we don't pick them up when it happens. we just pop the binky back in and walk away :)
