Champagne

My friend is getting married Saturday, her and I are both pregnant. Is one glass of Champagne okay?? Another bridesmaid wants to make her a mimosa the day of the wedding to calm her nerves a little. Mimosa is champagne and orange juice.

Thoughts????

Re: Champagne

  • Does the other bridesmaid know the bride is pregnant?  If she knew this, would she be offering a mimosa?

I'm with PP that I wait until I'm further along for an occasional glass of wine.

  • One serving of champagne shouldn't hurt.  But if I were her I would make it myself to make sure that I'm only being poured 5 oz or less of champagne.  Most wine glasses are much larger than that so one "glass" to some people is a lot more than 5 oz!

  • It seems really odd to me to make an alcoholic drink for a woman you know is pregnant.  Different doctors, and different women, have their own points of view on what's safe and when, so hey whatever works for you and your doc.  But pushing a mimosa on a pregnant lady just seems odd and borderline rude, especially in the context of calming someone's nerves before their wedding.

I'd suggest to the bridesmaid that instead, you treat the bride to a mani or mini neck massage or chocolates.  :)

  • I think if you give her a regular champagne glass with 1/2 champagne and 1/2 OJ, it shoudn't be an issue. But I agree with PP that one glass is unlikely to calm nerves and it's totally her choice.

  • No, I would never drink alcohol pregnant....nor would I ever put Alcohol in my babies bottle and feed it to him... Which is exactly what you're doing when you drink Alchol while pregnant or nursing. Just my point of view..It doesn't bother me when people drink pregnant, completely up to them!

  • I hate advocating drinking at all while pregnant. But I had a similar dilema this past summer. I got married when I was about 6 months pregnant and everyone I talked to about this said that a glass of champagne would do no harm to my little one. I still felt uneasy and only took a small symbolic sip during the toast. Id say when you are only talking about one drink, leave it up to the bride. Definitely don't let anyone pressure her (or you) into it. Best wishes!

  • Nope, you can always say 'I'll make my own ina  little bit" and then just pour OJ without the champagne in it.

I would not feel comfortable with alcohol until 3rd tri.

I feel the same way. Even in 3rd trimester 4oz. (A small glass) of red wine was all that was recommended by my midwife. It was not a green light for other beverages.

I would not imbibe before about 28 weeks.

Over react much? I drink & nurse just fine. It's one 12 oz. dark beer or glass of wine. If you are alright to drive you are ok to nurse. Seriously, if you are going to clutch your pearls at least give accurate information.

  • Honestly, I wouldn't drink even a sip during pregnancy.  Just my personal choice because I know if something were to happen to my child, I would always wonder and probably feel guilty.  I know some doctors say everything in moderation but this is one thing that I wouldn't even give thought to.  It's totally your decision and the brides decision on what you're comfortable with.

  • One mimosa isn't really going to calm your nerves, IMO. For a situation that high-stress, a couple glasses is preferable :) and you can't go there anyways. And unless your friend is completely 100% comfortable with drinking during pregnancy, it could just add to her anxiety. My rational brain is A-OK with having the occasional drink but it still felt very weird to have a small glass of wine on Thanksgiving! I can't imagine trying to process that while getting ready for my own wedding. I'd save my imbibing for a bit during the toasts.

No. You couldn't be more wrong. I took maybe two tiny sips of alcohol during my entire pregnancy. That's all I was comfortable with. Doctors say you can drink more than that safely. I doubt any doctor would ok someone putting alcohol in a baby's bottle. It is not the same thing. Please educate yourself before spreading any more sanctimonious misinformation.

  • You have to do whatever you're comfortable with.  For me, it is not worth the risk.  Alcohol is not something I need, and if it could potentially harm my baby then I'm not going to partake.  I know that this is a heated topic though, and it just comes down to doing whatever you think is best for you and your baby.

One glass is ok by me. It's your personal choice, however. And I mean one glass of wine. I personally wouldn't drink anything else.

    Edit: added wording

    It's a BOY

  • Very personal decision. I would ask the bride to be. For me it would be a no go.
